With the Alturas G4, Mahindra wants a slice of the action in the premium SUV space. But how does this new Mahindra flagship compare to its established rivals? Time to find out in a quick spec-comparison.

With the launch of the Alturas G4, Mahindra has decided to wage war on some of the established names in the premium SUV segment. And, so far, the home-grown manufacturer is looking quite confident about its brand new flagship. The thing is, as we found out recently, it’s a promising product for sure. However, now that its prices are out, the obvious question is if the Alturas G4 can really make a mark in a segment that’s dominated by the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. And while we're on the topic, when it comes to offering maximum value for your money in this segment, the recently updated Isuzu MU-X has to be in the mix.

Inevitably, this calls for a quick spec-comparison between all four SUVs to see which one’s the most complete, at least on paper.

Although the Fortuner looks the most aggressive of the lot, it’s actually the smallest SUV of the quartet when you compare its length, width, and height with others. The Endeavour is the longest here, but it’s the Alturus that’s more than 100mm wider than any of its competitors. Not only that, at 244mm, the Alturas has the highest ground clearance and longest wheelbase of the four SUVS. So, in terms of covering the real estate, the Alturas has its main rivals truly covered.

Powertrain:

The Alturas G4 is offered with only one powertrain, which is a 2,157cc four-cylinder turbo diesel that churns out 178.5bhp and 420Nm of torque. There’s only a 7-speed automatic on offer and four-wheel drive is optional. The Isuzu MU-X is also available with a single diesel engine, but it’s a bigger 2,999cc inline four-cylinder turbo unit. That said, despite its bigger capacity engine, the MU-X has lower power and torque figures – 174bhp and 380Nm. Like the Alturus, it’s only available with an automatic transmission and 4WD is optional. However, the Isuzu’s gearbox is a 5-speeder.

Ford Endeavour vs Toyota Fortuner

The Endeavour is available in two diesel engine variants – 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo and 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo. Both are available with a six-speed automatic as standard. The former is rated at 158bhp and 385Nm, while the latter develops 197bhp and 470Nm. The 2.2-litre version is only available in 4x2 version, while the 3.2-litre only has 4x4.

The Fortuner is the only vehicle here that’s available in both petrol and diesel versions. And both engines can be had with either an automatic or manual gearbox. The diesel engine is 2,755cc turbo inline four that churns out 174bhp and 420Nm (6AT)/ 450Nm (6MT). The petrol version, on the other hand, is 2,694cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine 164bhp and 245Nm. This is available with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. The diesel version has 4WD optional, but the petrol Fortuner is only available with 2WD drivetrain.

All these SUVs come packed with features in their top trims. While equipment like projector lamps, leather upholstery, powered driver’s seat, et al, are common in all four, the Endeavour and Alturas offer more in terms of creature comfort. The Ford gets active noise cancellation, a panoramic sunroof, semi-auto Parallel Park, power folding third row, etc.., while the Alturas comes with a 3D Surround camera in addition to rear parking camera and sensors. It also has a sunroof, but it's not panoramic. On the other hand, the Fortuner and MU-X miss out on sunroof in all trims.
