Ryo Hirakawa, the Toyota World Endurance Championship, will drive Alpine's Formula 1 car in the first practice session at the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka. He joined Alpine as a reserve driver in 2025 after holding a similar role at McLaren in 2024. Hirakawa made his F1 practice debut with McLaren at the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. His racing experience includes winning the 2022 Le Mans and securing two FIA WEC Hypercar championships.

Ryo Hirakawa said: 'I'm very excited, I can’t wait to drive the A525 in Free Practice 1 this weekend. I’m looking back to 18 years ago to 2007, the first time I went to watch the Japanese Grand Prix, it was a different track, Fuji, but it was Formula One in Japan. Since then, I started my racing career and now to drive during the weekend is going to be a dream come true, I just can’t wait.

'I have got everything prepared, we did simulator work in Enstone a few days ago and I’m going to enjoy the moment. Hopefully the weather is good, it will be a short session, but I will enjoy it and do my best for the team to hopefully input some direction on set up. I just want to add my appreciation to everyone at the team for the opportunity and support.'

Ryo Hirakawa, a two-time FIA World Endurance Championship Hypercar champion with Toyota, is set to make his mark in Formula 1 as he steps into Alpine’s A525 for FP1 at Suzuka. His transition to F1 reserve duties follows a standout career in sports cars, highlighted by a dominant victory at the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans.
