With victories in both races of Round 2, Joseph Mathew extends his lead in the championship
Subsequent to a great performance in the first round of the Suzuki Gixxer Cup 2017, Joseph Mathew continues with his top form. The Chennai based racer could only manage a third place on the grid on Saturday. Malsawmdawngliana posted a brilliant 1:23.770 lap to take pole position for the race. Lalmawipuia and Joseph Mathew took second and third place on the grid.
Race 1 turned out to be flawless for Mathew. He started well to take the lead, leaving Sanjeev Mhatre and Lalmawipuia to fight it out for second place. The duo fought right up till the finish line but it was Mumbai-based Mhatre who crossed the line first. After securing pole, Malsawmdawngliana didn’t have the kind of race that he would have hoped for. The Aizwal-based unfortunately crashed out on the second lap.
Victory in Race 1 meant that Mathew could start Race 2 from pole position. Grid positions for the second race were according to the result of Race 1. Mathew once again managed a superb start to take the lead and stay ahead till the chequered flag waved. But the surprise package was Malsawmdawngliana who despite starting from the pits had a phenomenal race to take the second step of the podium. Sanjeev Mhatre secured third in Race 2.
Alongside the Gixxer Cup, there was also the Red Bull Rookies Cup. A 1:33.477-minute lap brought Lalnunsanga pole position for Race 1 while Lalhruaizela secured second place on the grid. The first race of the Red Bull Rookies cup was undoubtedly the most nail-biting one of the weekend. Gunawardena and Lalhruaizela fought throughout the 8-lap race and only to cross the line neck-in-neck. The Sri Lankan rider, however, managed to cross the finish line just 0.010 seconds ahead of Lalhruaizela. In Race 2, Gunwardena managed to pull a lead right at the start and stayed ahead till the end of the race. Meanwhile, Lahruaizela and Varoon S fought throughout the race to finish in second and third respectively.
