BMW New 5 Series Preview
Although internationally, the 3 Series has been the best-selling model for BMW, in India, the title belongs to the 5 Series. The new-generation BMW 5 Series will be launched in India towards the end of 2017. Visually, the 5 Series is more of an evolution of its predecessor. Borrowing some of its design cues from the flagship 7 Series, the latest 5 Series looks extremely striking. The headlights are now sleeker and pulled further back, the kidney grille gets ‘air flaps’ for better aerodynamics and it gets a sharper profile too. The rear has a fluidic design to it but it doesn’t look as flamboyant as the front. On the inside too, the inspiration from the larger 7 Series is evident. It looks premium, is a lot plusher than before and boasts of improved space. Aside from improved comfort, BMW also introduces autonomous technology like steering and lane control, crossroad warning and more. Unfortunately, none of these features are likely to make it to the India-spec model. This 7th generation 5 Series is based on the new modular CLAR (CLuster ARchitecture) rear-wheel drive platform that also underpins the current 7 Series. Under the hood, the new 5 Series will come with a 2.0-litre 4-pot diesel motor that churns out 188 horses and peak torque of 400Nm. There will also a 2.0-litre petrol variant on offer. This unit is goof for 250bhp and 250Nm. Internationally, BMW also has the larger 3.0-litre 6-cylinder diesel on offer which is likely to come to India as the M-Sport package at a later stage. The new BMW 5 Series will come to Indian shores towards the end of 2017. When it is launched, it is likely to be priced higher than the current generation model. Expect it to be introduced at a starting price of Rs 52 lakh.
