Mahindra S201 Preview
To compete against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport, Mahindra will be launching a new compact SUV by mid-2018. Codenamed S201, this upcoming compact SUV will be based on the SsangYong Tivoli platform and will be introduced in 5-seat and 7-seat variants. In the international market, the Tivoli is on sale in the standard and the XLV trims – the latter with a larger overhang for more boot space. The India-spec model, however, will use the same philosophy but the larger variant will sport 7-seats instead of a larger boot. The 7-seater S201, of course, will not be able to reap the benefits of the sub-4 metre subsidy. In fact, this SUV doesn’t have a direct competitor either. The closest competitor will be the Hyundai Creta, the Renault Duster and maybe even the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
Aside from the platform, the much of the interior too will be borrowed from the Tivoli. On the outside though, the S201 will have signature Mahindra traits. Although there is no official news of the engine specifications as yet, we expect the S201 to come with petrol as well as diesel engine options. The SUV will come with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel.
Test mules of the Mahindra S201 have been spotted on several occasions. While there is no official confirmation about the launch date, but we may get to see the first concept at the upcoming Auto Expo in Delhi.
