Lighter, more powerful 2017 S1000R goes on sale in global markets.

After showcasing the 2017 BMW S1000R super-naked at EICMA last year, the firm has launched the motorcycle in global markets. Updates on the new S1000R include a new chassis, Euro IV compliant engine with more horsepower and a revised electronic suite.

The S1000R is one of the popular street-naked motorcycles around the world – mainly because it’s a stripped down S1000RR superbike. In the new model, the S1000R inches closer to being as aggressive as its superbike sibling, but keeps its street cred intact in the process. The first update of the new S1000R is a lighter chassis, meaning its weight has gone down from 207kg to 205kg. In addition to the weight loss, the S1000R’s 999cc in-line four cylinder engine now develops 160bhp – a bump of 5bhp over the previous model – and 112Nm of torque.

Among other highlights, the 2017 model lean-angle sensitive traction control and ABS along with a bidirectional quick-shifter as standard. You can also fit optional light-alloy forged HP wheels that are 2.4 kg lighter over standard wheels. The instrumentation cluster has also been updated for the new model. There are also new dual-tone colour schemes available with the 2017 S1000R.

BMW Motorrad is expected to make a comeback in the Indian market this year. It’s expected that it will launch its latest range of motorcycles here upon its return. While the entry-level BMW G310R will be the mainstay of the brand in India, other popular models like the S1000RR, or the S1000R you see here, should also find many takers in the country.
