Last year in April, the sales numbers of most two-wheeler manufacturers were next to nothing as the nation was in the first phase of lockdown and it was the first month of the BS6 era. A year later, let's see if times have changed

Last year this time the nation was in a lockdown and hoping to get an extension for registering the pending batch of BS4 at the dealership level. However, the sales of the last year could not be held accountable as the sales and manufacturing were paused. And currently, not much has improved and parts of the nation still face stringent lockdown-like restrictions. Some two-wheeler manufacturers have proactively taken the initiative for damage control hoping for the best results. For now, we run through two-wheeler manufacturers’ sales reports for the month of April 2021 and mainly focus on the sales figures of March 2021 as the nation was not in the panic situation caused due to the rising Covid-19 cases and challenging medical situation of what it is now.

Honda Two-wheelers India

In the month of April 2021, Honda two-wheelers India has managed to sell 2,83,045 units that include 240,100 units of two-wheeler sales in the domestic market. The March 2021 sales stood at 3,95,037 units for Honda Two-wheelers India and the month before that the company managed a sales figure of  4,11,578 units. For the first time in 36 months, Honda two-wheelers India has managed to clock 42,945 units of exports in the same month (April 2021). The exports stood at 2,630 units last April (2020). Honda two-wheelers India has also mentioned that the company has proactively controlled its dispatches to avoid inventory build-up across its network Pan-India in this time of the pandemic. This could likely affect the sales numbers of this (current) month.

Bajaj India has managed to push out a total of 3,48,173 units of two-wheels in the month of April 2021, which include 2,21,603 units of exports. The domestic two-wheeler sales registered were 1,26,570 units. Bajaj India reported a domestic sales figure of 1,81,393 units in the month of March 2021. In the financial year 2020-21, Bajaj managed to sell 12.5 lakh units of Pulsars globally, and the company has reported its exports income of Rs 12,687 crore. Bajaj exports 52 per cent of its volumes to over 79 countries. The statement also adds that Bajaj’s global sales have earned over USD 14 billion of foreign exchange over the last decade.

Suzuki Two-wheelers India

For the month of April 2021, Suzuki two-wheelers have reported an overall growth of 18 per cent when compared to its April 2019 sales. The Japanese company has registered a total of 63,879 unit domestic sales and 13,970 units of exports. Koichiro Hirao, Managing Director, Suzuki Motorcycle India said that the domestic sales number were higher by 12 per cent in comparison to April 2019. The exports of April 2021 also saw a growth of 57.5 per cent when compared similarly to April 2019. The sales and exports number of April 2020 have not been considered as the sales and manufacturing were halted due to the first phase of lockdown, hence Suzuki has taken the figures of April 2019 for a  vis-a-vis comparison. However, in the month of March 2021 Suzuki Two-wheelers India managed to sell 60,222 units domestically and 9,720 units in exports.

Royal Enfield Indian has registered 48,789 units of domestic sales and 4,509 units of exports in the month of April 2021. The total number of two-wheelers rolled off the assembly line is 53,298. Just as the nation was in a lockdown phase, no units of Royal Enfield motorcycles were sold domestically or exported in April 2020. In March 2021, Royal Enfield clocked the sale of 60,173 units domestically and 5,885 units in exports. The company also confirms that the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 will go on sale in the American markets later this year.

Hero Motocorp has registered a total sales number of 3,72,285 units in the month of April 2021. Out of which the domestic sales stood at 3,42,614 units and exports are clocked in at 29,671 units. A total of 3,39,329 units of motorcycles were rolled off, and 32,956 units of scooters from Hero’s manufacturing facilities. Hero Motocorp sold 576,957 units domestically in March 2021 and exported 32,617 units. In other news, Hero Motocorp has decided to extend the shutdown of its manufacturing facility, its Global Parts Center, and the Centre of Innovation Technology and R&D center in India until May 9, 2021.

The total domestic sales registered stood at 131,386 units in April 2021, and the exports for the same month stood at 94,807 units. TVS's total exports registered were 107,185 units in April 2021 and overall TVS motors managed to sell 131,386 units of motorcycles and 65,213 units of scooters in April 2021. 1,95,145 units were sold domestically and 89,436 units were exported by TVS in the month of February 2021.

Okinawa

For the month of April 2021, Okinawa clocked a sales figure of 4,467 units domestically. The current sales number is a substantial hike when compared to Y-O-Y sales figure from April 2020, where the company could manage to sell only 484 units.
