The executive luxury saloon segment gets a sharp new contender from Japan.
Shortly after its world debut in April this year, the all-new Lexus ES has been launched in India. The luxury saloon will be only available in its ES 300h hybrid avatar and is priced at ₹59.13 lakh (ex-showroom).
Now in its seventh-generation, the new Lexus ES is underpinned by Toyota’s new TNGA platform which makes it longer, lower and wider than than the car it replaces. Not just dimensions, the new ES has also changed drastically in the way it looks - it’s a lot edgier than before with a huge Lexus spindle grille dominating its front.
The ES 300h features a new fourth-gen hybrid drive which is Euro 6 compliant. It combines a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine with a lighter, more power-dense electric motor to generate a combined system output of 215bhp. Lexus claims an impressive 22.37km/l fuel economy figure for the car. Globally, the new ES is also available with conventional petrol powertrains, but India doesn’t get them.
The interiors of the new model feature four color schemes and three types of trim. Luxury equipment on the inside includes a 7-inch LCD instrument panel, a fully adjustable color heads-up display, a 12.3-inch ‘Electro Multi Vision’ infotainment system, and wireless charging pad, among others. The new ES also sports an increased boot space of 454 litres with auto-open trunk feature.
Safety kit on the 2018 ES 300h includes 10 airbags, hill start assist, vehicle stability control, and anti-theft system, with break-in and tilt sensors.
Priced at ₹59.13 lakh, the new Lexus ES 300h fits into the crowded executive luxury saloon segment which includes established players like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volvo S90, BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF and Audi A6. However, the Lexus is the only car here to offer a hybrid powertrain.
