The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS doesn't actually break cover -  instead, it makes the cover of the new Forza Motorsport 7 game.

The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS has been unveiled as it made a surprise debut at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo. If you’re wondering why it was launched at a tech event instead of one of those big car shows, there’s a simple reason behind that - the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS is the star car of the new Forza Motorsport 7 game, that's why.

Even if you aren’t well versed with the hugely complicated Porsche 911 range, it’s quite simple to understand the role of the GT2 RS in the line-up – it has always been the most hardcore of the lot, meaning the new one will also sit at the top of the range. That said, Porsche hasn’t revealed the specifications of the new model as yet. But then, you can almost bet that the GT2 RS is going to be quite mental. Reportedly, it’ll come powered by the same 3.8-litre twin turbo six-cylinder boxer engine that does duty in the 911 Turbo S. Power output, however, will be slightly higher – around 640bhp or so. Transmission duties will be carried out by a seven speed dual-clutch automatic. Power will go strictly to rear wheels.

If the engine produces as much firepower as predicted, the new GT2 RS should be able to dismiss 0-100km/h in just under three seconds along with a top speed in the region of 340km/h. To harness that kind of performance, the GT2 RS will most likely come with a rear-wheel steering system, stiffer chassis components and, as can be seen in the picture, it will also have some serious aero aids.

There’s no confirmation as to when the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS will go on sale, albeit it’s expected to come out only in 2018, and not this year.
