Tata Motors has confirmed that it will be launching an all-electric version of its popular Nexon SUV in the final quarter of 2020. The Nexon electric vehicle (EV) will be powered by the company’s recently introduced Ziptron technology and Tata is hinting at a starting price of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 17 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Nexon EV, as and when it enters the Indian market.

Details are sparse at the moment, but if Tata Motors’ official statement is to be believed, the Nexon EV will have a range of 300km. According to the company, the EV will be equipped with an efficient high voltage system that will offer ‘zippy’ performance and fast charging capability. In addition to this, Tata says the battery and motor of the vehicle will come with 8 years warranty, and both the components will meet IP67 dust and waterproof standard. Tata claims the Ziptron technology has been specifically designed and engineered for the Indian roads, keeping in mind our harsh weather as well as challenging traffic conditions.

To increase consumer awareness, and to promote the upcoming vehicle – it goes without saying – Tata Motors has also rolled a campaign titled #TheUltimateElectricDrive, which will feature celebrity couple of Milind Soman and Ankita Konwar, as they’ll embark on a road trip from Manali to Leh in a Nexon EV. The couple will be covering the high-altitude Himalayan passes with unpaved roads and steep gradients, with limited charging infrastructure and under extreme weather conditions to showcase the Nexon EV’s capabilities.

Tata will also launch an all-electric version of the upcoming Altroz hatchback soon after the launch of the Nexon EV. It’s expected to share the Ziptron drivetrain with the Nexon EV. Next-gen versions of the Tigor EV and the upcoming Tiago EV are also expected to launch by 2020 and this will result in a four-car strong EV line-up for Tata Motors by 2021.
