Car Sales Report: November 2020

Despite the festive season in November, sales for a lot of carmakers has reduced in comparison to October 2020. On the brighter side though, the November 2020 figures, in most cases, are certainly an improvement from last year

Maruti Suzuki:

With 1,53,223 units sold in November 2020, Maruti Suzuki has recorded a meagre growth of just 1.7% over the same month last year. Of the aforementioned number, the company has sold 1,35,775 passenger vehicles in the domestic market. The Manesar-based carmaker’s small cars Alto and S-Presso accounted for 22,339 units.

Hyundai:

Hyundai has registered cumulative sales of 59,200 units in November 2020, out of which 48,800 units were sold in the domestic market. Interestingly, despite the festive season and the addition of the i20 in November, Hyundai couldn’t better the highest-ever domestic sales of 56,605 units it sold in October. The i20, did however bring good numbers for the brand. Since its launch on 5th November, Hyundai has sold 9,906 units of the premium hatchback. Hyundai also sold 9,265 units of the Venue in November. The mid-sized SUV space continues to be dominated by Hyundai as the company sold more than 12,017 units of the Creta last month.

Tata:

Just like a lot of other carmakers, sales for Tata in November has been lower than in October. With domestic sales of 47,859 units last month the company was 4% lower in comparison to the 49,669 units sold in October 2020. That being said, in comparison to November last year, Tata has registered a hefty growth of 26% over 41,124 units it sold in November 2019.

Kia:

Sales have been rather uncannily consistent for Kia Motors over the last two months. The Korean carmaker recorded sales of 21,022 units last month and 21,021 units in October 2020. Kia only had the Seltos on sale since its entry into India in August 2019 until Feb this year. With that in mind, it wont quite be fair to draw a comparison with the November 2019 sales numbers. But we do know that with 9,205 units sold in November 2020, the Seltos continues to be quite a hit in the Indian market. As expected though, the more affordable and smaller, Sonet has garnered better numbers with 1,417 units sold last month. In fact, this makes it the best-selling compact SUV on sale in India, for the second consecutive month. The company sold 400 units of the Carnival last month.

Mahindra:

Mahindra has recorded a hefty 24% growth last month with 18,212 units on the sales charts. In comparison to November 2019, the Nashik-based firm has sold 3,575 units more. While there has been a substantial decrease in sales of cars and vans, Mahindra utility vehicles really seem to be growing fast. The company sold 17,971 utility vehicles in November 2020. With the coronavirus pandemic forcing us into a complete lockdown in April and May, and sales only gradually recovering thereafter, year-to-date numbers are nothing to write home about. With 88,309 units sold since 1st April, as opposed to 1,37,168 last year, Mahindra is currently down on sales by 36%.
