The more premium companion to the Kia Carens has officially made its debut in India, following a week of teaser announcement. Called the Carens Clavis, this new car is offered in eight monotone colour options: Ivory Silver Gloss (new), Pewter Olive, Imperial Blue, Glacier White Pearl, Gravity Gray, Sparkling Silver, Aurora Black Pearl, and Clear White. While it shares its platform with the Carens, the Kia Clavis has notable upgrades in both design and technology. In addition to competing with its sibling, the Kia Clavis takes on rivals like the Toyota Innova Hycross and Maruti Suzuki Invicto in the Indian market. Let’s take a closer look at what the Clavis brings as a more premium alternative to the Carens.
Despite sharing its underpinnings with the Carens, the Kia Clavis marks a striking departure from the familiar MPV styling, embracing a more rugged, SUV-inspired look. The front boasts a more assertive and contemporary design, highlighted by its distinctive 3-pod LED headlights neatly tucked into triangular housings. They are complemented by sleek LED DRLs and a closed-off grille.

While silver faux skid plates accent both bumpers, the Clavis rides on 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels with a star design. It has a full-width rear LED light bar that seamlessly connects the redesigned taillamps.
The Carens' interior, according to Kia, is designed keeping in mind modern Indian families. It provides roomy third-row seating and a new two-spoke steering wheel, the same as in the Kia Syros. Other features include dual screen setup, ventilated front seats, sliding and reclining 2nd row seats, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a dashcam with dual view, and Infotainment/Temperature Control Swap Switch.
The most significant addition is the Level-2 ADAS with functions like driver attention warning and front collision avoidance assist. Additional safety features are six airbags, Electronic Stability Control, and a 360-degree camera with Blind Spot Monitor.
The Clavis inherits the tried-and-tested engine options from the Carens, offering a familiar mix of petrol and diesel powertrains. These include a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with 113bhp/144Nm, a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit with 158bhp/253Nm, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine with 114bhp/250Nm.

The transmission options include a 6-speed manual, intelligent manual transmission (iMT), a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT), and a traditional torque converter automatic. Notably, the turbo-petrol now gains a 6-speed manual gearbox option.
With several notable improvements over the existing Carens (priced between Rs 10.60 lakh-Rs 19.70 lakh), the Clavis is expected to fetch a considerable premium. Kia has not revealed the launch date for the premium model, but we expect the model to go on sale sometime soon.
