No, this isn’t Lamborghini’s first-ever SUV. But it is the fastest SUV in the world with a 0-100kmph time of just 3.6 seconds.
2012 Beijing Auto Show – that was when we first got a glimpse of Lamborghini’s second SUV ever – in concept form mind you. It has been an extremely long wait since then, but Lamborghini has now taken the wraps off its production-spec Urus at their factory in Bologna, Italy. It’s a Lamborghini that you can use every day, if you can afford its expected Rs 1.5 crore price tag that is. With a higher ground clearance, the capability to drive on broken tarmac and space enough for four adults, this Lamborghini is without a doubt the most practical one ever made.
The newest Lamborghini Urus is based on the MLB platform which also underpins the Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and the Audi Q7. At the heart of the Urus is a 4.0-litre V8 that pumps out an insane 641bhp and 850Nm. This engine is the first ever turbocharged motor to be used in the history of the car maker. But despite that, when Lamborghini is up to it, performance is a given. The Urus can do the 0-100km/h dash in just 3.6 seconds making it the fastest production SUV. 200km/h is crossed in just 12.8 seconds. To provide stopping power to this monster of an SUV, Lamborghini has fitted it with a 440mm carbon ceramic disc up front and a 370mm one at the back. The Italian SUV come fitted with 21-inch wheels as standard but can be upsized to 23-inches.
Yes, we know. Although the specs and acceleration figures are nothing less than what you’d expect from the brand, the Urus is a Lamborghini in every other aspect too. It is as razor-edged and chiselled as any other car that wears the raging bull badge. Up front, there is the mesh grille with super sleek LED headlights on either side. The back is narrow with the sharp LED taillamps that stretch across the tailgate. It looks exactly like the concept that was unveiled more than five years ago at Beijing but in terms of dimensions, this production version has a wider backside.
Lamborghini will begin sale of the Urus in the global market in 2018 with the India launch soon after. In the UK market, the Urus is expected cost above Rs 1.5 crore. In India, however, it is sure to demand a lot more. But most importantly, considering Indian buyers penchant for SUVs, the Urus may be the ideal Lamborghini to have in India.
