The Alto has been the best-selling car in India for 14 consecutive years.

The cumulative sales of the Maruti Suzuki Alto have helped it achieve the milestone of 35 lakh units since its launch in the year 2000.

The Alto has been the preferred choice for first-time family car buyers for quite some time now. This has been mostly made possible thanks to Maruti Suzuki’s unmatched nationwide service network and lower maintenance costs.

Additionally, Maruti has consistently introduced new design as well technology upgrades in
the Alto to keep its market intact. Currently, the hatchback is offered with two engine options – 800cc and K10 – along with a CNG fuel variant. In 2014, Maruti Suzuki also introduced its AMT Auto Gear Shift option on the Alto. Currently, about 18 per cent of Alto K10 sales come from the AGS variants.

Maruti claims that the Alto has clocked a growth rate of 6 per cent in 2017 – 18. At the same time, it has garnered a market share of 33 per cent in the same time period in its segment. The company also says that nearly 44 per cent of the sales comes from young customers of less than 35 years of age. This contribution has grown by 4 per cent in the past three years.

Commenting on the success of the Alto, R S Kalsi, Senior Executive Director (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki, said, ‘Brand Alto continues to remain fresh, relevant and as exciting as it was in 2000. Since 2006, every two years, Alto is adding 5 lakh new happy customers. In 2008, we clocked 10 lakh units. In 2010, it touched 15 lakh units and today in 2018, we have crossed 35 lakhs of cumulative sales.’

The Maruti Suzuki Alto remaines the sales leader among A-segment hatchbacks. This space also includes the Renault Kwid, Hyundai Eon and Datsun Redigo. However, none of these sub-compact hatchbacks can manage even the half of Alto’s monthly sales.
