Maruti’s large hatchback crossover is all set to get refreshed on September 28, 2017 - along with some important changes to its variant line-up.
The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross debuted in India in 2015, alongside Maruti’s NEXA premium retail network. While most of Maruti’s shots at the premium car market have been unremarkable, the S-Cross proved to be otherwise, managing decent monthly sales for India’s biggest carmaker.
Globally, Suzuki revealed the mid-life refresh for the S-Cross earlier in 2017. Changes to the facelift include an all-new front fascia - a bigger chrome grill and larger headlamps - giving the S-Cross a much bolder appearance than before. At the rear are new LED tail lights, and the interiors now feature enhanced quality materials. The alloy wheel design is all-new as well.
Cosmetic changes aside, a lot will be changed under the S-Cross’ skin as well. The bigger 1.6-litre DDiS 320 engine will be dropped from the crossover’s line-up. Maruti was the first manufacturer to bring this Fiat-sourced diesel engine in India, which produces 118bhp and 320Nm. The reason behind the discontinuation is the lack of demand for this engine.
Another development would be the introduction of Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) system with the DDiS 200 engine. We have already seen the SHVS system on the Ciaz and the Ertiga. Interestingly, when Maruti Suzuki introduced this system in Ertiga and Ciaz, hybrid cars received certain subsidies which helped bring the price down. However, GST has changed the scenario - so expect the facelifted car’s price to go northward.
Another thing to note is that the rumoured petrol version of the S-Cross will not be launched with the facelift. Maruti is said to be working on its own 1.5-litre petrol powertrain, but it looks like the engine is still in its development stage, thus postponing the possibility of a petrol powered S-Cross.
