Maruti Suzuki will introduce their new 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine with the Ciaz sedan in February 2019.
Maruti Suzuki has been expected to replace the 1.3-litre Multijet engine with a brand new 1.5-litre turbo diesel motor for some time.
The 1.3-litre Fiat sourced Suzuki DDiS motor has done duty in numerous Maruti models from in two different tunes – the 74bhp version in the Swift, Dzire, SX4, fourth-gen Baleno and Ritz and the 88bhp version in the Ertiga, Ciaz, Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross.
Maruti Suzuki launched the new facelifted Ciaz with a new 1.5-litre petrol engine in August 2018. Our sources have revealed that the Ciaz will be the first model to get the new 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine, which will be introduced in February 2019.
The new 1.5-litre diesel mill – developed in-house by Suzuki – is a four-cylinder turbocharged unit, which is reported to generate just under 100 horsepower. Those who have driven the car claim that the real-world performance of the car is quite good. And that the new 1.5 diesel engine will offer considerably better driveability than the outgoing 1.3-litre engine, thanks to a more free-revving nature and, of course, the higher power and torque outputs of the engine. However, its exact power and torque figures and other technical details have not been revealed so far.
The engine will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Our sources have also confirmed that there will be no automatic transmission option as of now. Additionally, it is also said that the new motor will not come paired with Suzuki’s SHVS mild-hybrid regenerative braking system.
While the new powertrain is Euro 6 compliant, Maruti will offer the engine in BS 4 compliant version until the BS 6 norms are enforced from April 1, 2020.
Currently, the diesel-powered Ciaz has been priced between Rs 9.1 lakh and Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). With the introduction of the new 1.5-litre diesel engine, prices are expected to increase marginally, but as the motor’s displacement is less than 1500cc, it will still be under the regulated tax bracket.
