Mitsubishi has announced that the Lancer will officially be discontinued from production in 2017.

The year 2016 saw many celebrities pass away and in the automotive world some iconic cars met with the same fate. Cars like the Jaguar XK, the Aston Martin DB9, the Ferrari 458 Italia, the BMW Z4, Volvo S80, Mini Cooper Coupe and after 10 whole generations, the legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evo among many others. The Evo with its all-wheel drive, turbocharged 4-cylinder 500hp engine was also a Hollywood hero which made its appearances in movies like the Fast and the Furious franchise.

Mitsubishi first introduced the Lancer in 1973, and in 1992 a powerful sporty percormance version was introduced as the Lancer Evo. But in 2016, Mitsubishi announced that after ten full generations, the Evo will finally be laid to rest and to pay homage to the legacy the Evo will leave behind, they introduced the Lancer Evo X Final Edition which would be based on the Evo X 2016 Model Year and produced in limited numbers.

Now however, Mitsubishi made an announcement that the year 2017 will see the standard Lancer also be put out of production and it will be laid to rest for good. The Lancer arrived in India for the first time back in 1998 which found many happy buyers and the high performance Evo only arrived with the Evo X only recently. But the sales never picked up as the car was priced at a premium due to import duties.

The company has shifted focus from sedans and high performance cars, to Pick-up trucks, SUVs and crossovers which are now in more popular demand across the globe. Matsubishi is scheduled to reveal a new crossover at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, but we hope that this discontinuation of this icon is only temporary, and we hope the Lancer will soon be resurrected.
