The Tata Nexon will be powered by two newly developed petrol and diesel motors
This year so far, Tata Motors has already launched their flagship SUV Hexa and a new compact sedan Tigor. Now, the company is all set to bring in their compact crossover Nexon around the festive season this year. The Mumbai-based company first showcased the Nexon in concept form at the 2016 Auto Expo. The production version of the car is expected to be unveiled towards the end of this month. But before we get a closer look at the Nexon in its production avatar, Tata Motors has officially released its engine specifications.
At the heart of the Nexon are two newly developed engines. The compact crossover will get a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron petrol motor that is good for 108bhp and 170Nm. This is essentially the same engine that we have experienced on the Tiago but has been fitted with a turbocharger. In fact, the diesel too, is a derivative of the Tiago’s 1.05-litre unit but in the Nexon, Tata has added another cylinder that increases its displacement to 1.5-litre. The turbocharged motor also produces 108bhp but torque rating is higher at 260Nm. The Nexon will also be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission, to begin with.
Based on Tata's Impact Design philosophy, the Nexon looks wide and bulky up front but it has a nice coupe-esque profile. Interior is expected to look identical to the Tiago and the Tigor, and this one too is expected to have customisable panels for the dashboard.
Commenting on the occasion, Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors said, “The engine is the heart of the car and along with the SUV like design and features, we wanted to offer punchy, responsive and refined engines. Both these engines have been designed and developed post extensive feedback from auto enthusiasts, expert drivers, followed by extensive testing across India, on different terrains. We are confident that this new family of engines will further help us build our brand and deliver a memorable experience on-road.”
When launched the Tata Nexon is likely to be priced around the Rs 7-10 lakh range. At that price point, it will take the challenge to the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford Ec0Sport, Honda WR-V and the Hyundai i20 Active. The Tata Nexon will be launched in the Indian market around the festive season.
