Daimler AG has developed X-Ray vision technology to use while crash testing vehicles.

Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, Smart Automobiles, among many others, and also the largest truck manufacturer in the world, have co-developed X-ray technology for crash testing vehicles.

Damiler has developed the system jointly with Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, Ernst-Mach-Institut, EMI from Freiburg. The technology is currently under trial by Vehicle Safety unit at Daimler AG, and is being applied for the first time at the i?protect Tech Center.

Established on January 21, 2016, the i-protect Tech Center, I shwere Damiler AG has been working internally to develop sustainable solution on automotive safety technology of the future. In addition to the above mentioned partners, the facility also caters to other partners which include Robert Bosch GmbH, University of Stuttgart, the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials (IWM), Technical University of Dresden, the Technical University of Graz and the Klinikum Stuttgart.

The technology which is being tested at the moment uses Ultra fast x-ray technology to produce still images of defined areas in razor sharp quality during crash tests. This will allow a better understanding of inside components deformation behaviour and process in the event of a crash. Additionally, the data from the technology can be combined with computer based simulation models. Cumulatively, Daimler claims that it will further improve the reliability and forecasting quality of vehicle crash test simulations of real-life crashes.

Teams at the i-protect Tech Center are also working on new approaches in the areas of interior monitoring and occupant classification which will help improve passive safety. Muscle-controlled movements, virtually, is another step towards active use of digital human body model to replace a crash test dummy in the development of new preventive protection concepts.
