GM India brings production to a halt at its Halol plant after 21 years.

General Motors India has officially announced that the company has brought to halt all its production operations at its Halol plant in Gujarat. This does not come as a surprise as we were aware that GM India had plans to do so since the year 2015 and was in talks with SIAC Motor Corporation to acquire the Halol Plant, something that had come to light in January 2017.

The halt in production at the Halol plant sees General Motors consolidate its India manufacturing activities at its Talegoan plant in Pune, Maharashtra. The Talegaon facility currently has a capacity to produce 1,30,000 vehicles a year and 1,60,000 units. The company will increase production capacity to 2,20,000 units a year by 2025. While there isn’t much of a market for the current range of Chevrolet cars in India, GM does export models from India and this is something that will be on a steady rise as the years go by.

The last Chevrolet Tavera was produced today at GM’s Halol plant bringing to an end a 21-year production cycle at the plant that began in 1996 when GM started making Opel cars in India.

GM India says that the company is offering generous separation payments to employees of the Halol plant while also offering employee transfers to its Talegaon plant.

“The consolidation of manufacturing at our Talegaon facility is an important milestone for GM India. That said, we are mindful of the impact on our employees at Halol. We have committed to support them through this necessary transition with generous separation payments or the option of continuity of employment at Talegaon,” said, GM India President and Managing Director Kaher Kazem.

“GM India is very grateful for the continued support of the Government of Gujarat throughout our time manufacturing at Halol and through this period of transition. I would like to recognize all our employees for their dedication, professionalism and contributions over the many years of operation and also to our suppliers for their partnership and support,” added Kazem.
