Tata Motors Domestic Passenger Vehicle Sales Decline 11% Year-on-Year in May

Tata Motors posted an 11% year-on-year decline in domestic passenger vehicle sales. However, exports saw a healthy rise of 28%.

Tata Motors sold a total of 70,187 vehicles in May 2025, marking a drop of 7,744 units compared to 76,766 in May 2024. Of this, 67,429 units were delivered in the domestic market, reflecting a 10% year-on-year decline from 75,173 units a year ago. The passenger vehicle (PV) segment continued to show weakness, with domestic PV sales (including EVs) falling 11% to 41,557 units from 46,697 in May 2024. Total PV sales, including exports, mirrored this 11% dip, landing at 42,040 units. On a positive note, exports saw a 28% jump, rising from last year’s 378 units to 483 units this May. Meanwhile, EVs bucked the trend with a modest 2% growth, inching up from 5,558 units in May 2024 to 5,685 units in May 2025.

Tata Motors Commercial Vehicle Sales

Tata Motors sold 28,147 commercial vehicles in May 2025, down 5% from 29,691 units in May 2024. Heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) truck sales declined by 10%, slipping from 7,924 units to 7,106. On the other hand, the ILMCV truck segment recorded healthy growth of 11%, with sales climbing to 4,954 units.

Passenger carrier sales saw a slight uptick, reaching 4,748 units in May 2025. However, small commercial vehicles and pickups experienced a sharp 20% decline, falling to 9,064 units. These drops dragged total domestic CV sales down by 9% to 25,872 units. On the other side, exports showed strong momentum with a notable 87% increase, rising to 2,275 units year-on-year.

Other Developments

Tata Motors recently launched the all-new Altroz hatchback, with prices starting at Rs 6.89 lakh and going up to Rs 11.29 lakh (ex-showroom). This launch represents the first significant update to the Altroz since its debut in 2020.

The refreshed model comes in five trims—Smart, Pure, Creative, Accomplished S, and Accomplished+ S. It is available in five colour options: Royal Blue, Ember Glow, Dune Glow, Pure Grey, and Pristine White. In terms of market rivalry, the Tata Altroz continues to compete with the Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, and Toyota Glanza.
