We got a chance to get behind the wheel of the fastest E-Class ever produced and it was indeed epic!
There are two sides to every performance car. The first and the more publicly exposed side is that of the numbers - acceleration figures, top speed, power-to-weight ratio and the likes. In the case of the new Mercedes-AMG E63 S, it is over 600 horses and the capability to dismiss the 100km/h mark in just over 3 seconds. While this is itself is impressive, it is like the cover of a book and doesn't quite tell the complete story. And then, there is the manic side that you only get to experience from behind the wheel. We got a chance to experience the fury of the 4.0-litre firebreather and what better place to do it than the Buddh International Circuit.
Since slotting it into Eco or comfort at a race track would have been an empty-headed move, we drove the car in the Sport+ mode for all the three laps. To just say that the E63 S is fast would simply be an understatement, especially knowing that it accelerates almost as fast as a Lamborghini Huracan. Dig the right foot deep and the E63 S will angrily push you back into the seat and surge ahead with a jolt. The ease with which the car gains speed with the roaring sound of the exhaust is simply tantalising. Pushing it hard around the circuit, I could actually feel the electronics working hard to keep the ferocity of the E63 under check. On more than one occasion I could feel the car wanting to dance but the surveillance of the traction control was prompt. Of course, all of this is well aided by the Michelin Pilot Sport S tyres that the car comes fitted with. Unlike the standard E-Class sold in India, the E63 is based on the relatively shorter wheelbase version on sale globally. In union with the Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, this endows the ability to attack corners with the ruthlessness of Genghis Khan. There’s adequate weight and good feedback from the steering wheel too. We drove the E63 that has been fitted with the AMG performance pack. This includes carbon ceramic brakes with chic looking red or yellow callipers. I drove the car after three other journalists had already had a go on it and even with that the brakes hadn’t lost its bite.
Although we drove it at a track, it is hard not to notice that unlike some of the supercars that deliver similar performance, this E63 is a practical offering. Despite not being based on the LWB E-Class, there is a good amount of room for passengers at the back. At the front it comes fitted with race car like sports seats that have amazing lateral support. It doesn’t fall behind in terms of creature comforts as well – from a Burmester audio system, dual-zone climate control, head-up display, ventilated seats to Mercedes’ COMAND system, the E63 has it all and more.
The E63 in all its generations has always been a car that can be as modest as it is manic. In this new avatar, Mercedes has managed to further reinforce both these attributes. Moreover, aside from being the fastest E ever built, it matches some of the supercars in terms of performance and that is really saying something. The Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4Matic+ will continue to compete against the recently launched BMW M5. We can't wait to pit them against each other to find out which is the ultimate sports sedan in the business.
