The Scorpion brand has unveiled a special edition, called the Abarth 695 75 Anniversario, to commemorate its 75th birthday. This edition pays homage to the renowned 1.4-litre four-cylinder T-Jet engine, with a limited production run of 1,368 units, matching the engine's cubic capacity (1,368cc). The celebratory hatchback is finished in a striking black and gold colour scheme. Unique design elements of the car include a set of 17-inch golden alloy wheels, the 75 Anniversario piston head graphics on the sides, golden Abarth branding on the doors, and a prominent gold scorpion on top.

To provide some context, Abarth is Fiat's performance brand, and Fiat introduced several Abarth vehicles in India during its presence in our market until 2019 when Fiat India terminated operations due to dwindling sales and high operating costs. Some of the remarkable Fiat vehicles included the 595, Grande Punto, <a href="https://www.autox.com/track-test/fiat-abarth-punto-track-test/">Abarth Punto</a>, and Linea T-Jet.

Returning to the recently unveiled Anniversary model, here's everything you need to know about its features and other characteristics.

<h2>Abarth 695 75 Anniversario: Interior and Features</h2>

The dashboard of the special edition car is upholstered in black Alcantara, which matches the inlays on the Sabelt Carbon seats. The interior also gets an embroidered gold 75° Anniversario symbol, extra carbon detailing on the steering wheel, and aluminium pedals.

The celebratory model features Abarth's Record Monza exhaust with stacked tailpipes, an active valve unit, and Koni frequency-selective dampers. Other features include a Beats Audio sound system, an auto climate control system, a 7-inch infotainment screen, and a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, among others.

<h2>Abarth 695 75 Anniversario: Engine</h2>

The 695 75 Anniversario version is powered by the 1.4-litre (1,368cc) T-Jet turbo-petrol motor, which includes a Garrett GT 1446 turbocharger. This engine generates an impressive 177bhp and 250Nm of torque, enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 6.7 seconds. The top speed of the car stands at 225km/h.

<h2>Abarth 600e Scorpionissima Launch Edition Unveiled</h2>

The Abarth 600e, the automaker's newest offering, is a purely electric homage to the Fiat 600 from the 1950s and 1960s. It offers far greater power and comes with a limited launch edition.

The exclusive Scorpionissima edition is going to have a limited production run of 1,949 units. While UK prices and availability are not known at this time, market reports suggest a starting price of around EUR 40,000 (approximately Rs 41.83 lakh).

<h2>Fiat Abarth 600e Scorpionissima Launch Edition: Mechanical Details</h2>

Abarth has previously stated that the 600e's electric drivetrain will generate 237bhp of maximum power, which is a significant improvement above the 154bhp&nbsp;delivered by&nbsp;the standard&nbsp;Fiat model. Although the number of electric motors was not disclosed by the brand, the teaser video suggests a front-wheel drive setup with a limited-slip differential. Apart from this, the Fiat 600e's 54kWh battery will likely be retained, which means the Abarth variant's range would probably be less.&nbsp;If the 600e Abarth is fitted with the same battery as the Fiat version, it can provide roughly 400-kilometre&nbsp;of range on Europe's&nbsp;WLTP test cycle.

<h2>Fiat Abarth 600e Scorpionissima Launch Edition: Design&nbsp;Cues and Chassis</h2>

The familiar CMP/e-CMP architecture from Stellantis, which powers Fiat's 600e as well as the Jeep Avenger, the Vauxhall Mokka, and the Peugeot 2008, forms the basis of the new "Perfo-eCMP" platform on which the Abarth 600e is built.&nbsp;Abarth also&nbsp;revealed&nbsp;that they collaborated with&nbsp;Hankook, the tyre supplier for the Formula E racing series, for&nbsp;the development of the 600e's tyres.&nbsp;A power-to-weight ratio of 150bhp/ton, based on the 1,620 kg kerb weight of the standard Fiat 600e, will place it far higher than the 110bhp/ton of the smaller, 152bhp&nbsp;<a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/new-fiat-abarth-500e-unveiled-111865/">Abarth 500e</a>.

Abarth has also modified the chassis of the 600e to provide better handling, in addition to the powertrain. A new limited-slip differential designed specifically for EVs distributes power to each front wheel, and its suspension geometry has been adjusted to improve stability. The Abarth's Alcon braking system, which is not vented or drilled, has larger discs for increased stopping force, and new tyres with a performance-oriented compound&nbsp;have also been installed without compromising efficiency.

A fixed roof-mounted spoiler, sportier lower intake section with new diagonal grilles for better cooling, new tinted rear lights, and distinctive 20-inch diamond-cut wheels distinguish it from the regular Fiat 600e. The model will reportedly have more supportive seats made especially for the sporty&nbsp;600e.

Although the brand has not yet revealed all the specifications of the Abarth 600e Scorpionissima Launch Edition, it will be the most potent road-going model it has ever produced. A variety of performance enhancements are planned to improve the&nbsp;car's overall performance. For those unaware, Abarth is a seasoned rally and performance carmaker and&nbsp;will soon celebrate 75 years in operation. Although the manufacturer started off making sports vehicles, since the 1950s it has developed partnerships with other Italian automakers, most notably <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/fiat-topolino-mickey-mouse-themed-evs-mark-disneys-100th-anniversary-115345/">Fiat</a>.&nbsp;Abarth continues to produce distinctive, high-performance cars with the iconic scorpion badge utilising Fiat components, even though Fiat has since completely acquired the company and Abarth is now part of the bigger Stellantis group.

Fiat Abarth 600e Revealed in Scorpionissima Launch Edition, Is the Brand's Most Powerful EV Yet with 237bhp

Hypnotic Purple, the paint job that the new Fiat Abarth 600e Scorpionissima Launch Edition is decked out in, looks attractive when paired with the gloss-black trim, dual-tone alloy wheels, and the acid-green scorpion insignia on the front fenders.

The Fiat Abarth 500e is offered in both three-door hatchback and two-door Cabrio body style variants.

Abarth has&nbsp;unveiled its first entirely electric vehicle, a Fiat 500e-based variant with a host of performance-oriented improvements. Featuring&nbsp;a distinctive body kit, a sportier chassis configuration, a more potent <a href="https://www.autox.com/electric-cars-in-india/">electric</a> engine, unique driving modes, and a 'sound generator',&nbsp;the Abarth 500e stands out from its&nbsp;rivals.

In terms of performance, The Abarth 500e's single electric motor&nbsp;generates 153bhp and 235Nm of peak torque&nbsp;– 36bhp and 15Nm more over those of the Fiat 500e.&nbsp;

In terms of range, the Abarth 500e gets the Fiat 500e's 42kWh battery, along with a new 85kW rapid charging technology, which can add approximately 40 kilometres&nbsp;of range in less than 5 minutes, while a&nbsp;0 to 80% charge takes 35 minutes.&nbsp;The Abarth 500e's revised face is what makes it noticeably different from the standard&nbsp;Fiat. It also features a freshly drawn Scorpion signet, a newly&nbsp;designed radiator grille, and slightly altered full LED headlights. Additionally, there are new titanium-grey exterior mirror caps, a new rear diffuser insert, more flared side skirts, a new front apron, and distinctive light-alloy wheels.

The car's interior is almost identical to that of the Fiat. The standard equipment includes a 7.0-inch instrument panel, a rearview camera, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. The top-tier variants of the car come with JBL speakers and sports seats wrapped in Alcantara. The pre-orders for the model are now being accepted, although the prices are still unknown.

New Fiat Abarth 500e unveiled

The brand-new Abarth 500e, the company's first electric vehicle (EV), has been unveiled. According to the company, it is the most dynamic, responsive, and engaging model it has ever produced.

The new Abarth F595 pays tribute to Carlo Abarth-designed Formula Italia single-seater racing car on its 50th anniversary.&nbsp;

Say hello to the Abarth F595! What is it, you ask? Well, it’s a new limited-edition version of the hot Abarth 595, which pays tribute to the Carlo Abarth-designed Formula Italia racing car on its 50th anniversary. In addition to that, the F595 also gets some bits and bobs from the company’s current&nbsp;Formula 4 racing car.

The Abarth F595 will be offered in both hatchback and convertible versions. To help onlookers differentiate it from regular models, the F595 comes with special Rally Blue design cues on the bumpers and ORVMs. The Abarth F595 will be available in six colour combinations – Race White, Campovolo Grey, Track Grey, Scorpion Black, Record Grey, and Tarmac Grey.

In addition to that, it gets Sport 17-inch Formula alloy wheels and F595 badges. As standard, the car’s fitted with a new vertically-stacked quad-pipe Record Monza Sovrapposto exhaust system. It comes with an active valve control system, which can increase the vocals at the press of a ‘Scorpion’ button on the dashboard. That button also weighs up the steering and allows a more aggressive throttle response. The car is also equipped with new Koni rear shocks with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) to improve road-holding and grip.

The interior is unchanged, albeit it comes with some special elements, such as black design cues around the infotainment display and a new matte black dashboard, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather Abarth sports seats.

Powering the F595 is the same 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol unit as that of the brand’s Formula 4 cars. The engine develops 165bhp and 230Nm of torque and comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automated manual gearbox with paddle shifts. The manual version can clock 0 – 100km/h in 7.3 seconds, while the AMT version will take 7.4 seconds. The top speed in both versions is pegged at 217km/h.

The Abarth F595 is currently available in the UK and is priced between £20,305 (Rs 20.92 lakh) and £24,305 (Rs 25.04 lakh).

New Abarth F595 celebrates 50th anniversary of Formula 4 racer

The new Abarth F595 pays tribute to Carlo Abarth-designed Formula Italia racing car on its 50th anniversary. Powered by a 1.4-litre tubro petrol engine derived from the brand's current Formula 4 car, the Abarth F595 will be available in limited numbers.

The Abarth Punto hits the headlines with a famous badge and punchy powertrain, but how does it compare to the current hot hatch maestro – the VW Polo GT TSI? We pit one against the other to find out.&nbsp;

Let’s establish two facts right away. One, I love hot hatchbacks, and, two, the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI has pretty much dominated the segment ever since its launch – with its direct injection turbo petrol engine and double-clutch automatic gearbox. But Fiat has recently thrown down the gauntlet with the Abarth Punto. And, on paper, the souped-up Punto has the GT TSI licked. So, to see if the Abarth Punto lives up to its claims, we take it for a spin and pit it against its arch rival.

Fiat’s Abarth Punto is powered by the same 1.4 litre, turbocharged, multi-point fuel injection engine that does duty in the Linea T-Jet. With 145bhp on tap, the Abarth is considerably more powerful than the GT TSI that has a 1.2 litre unit and 103bhp of max power.

The GT TSI gets a slick shifting seven-speed double clutch automatic gearbox while the Abarth Punto gets a conventional five-speed manual gearbox. Here again on paper, as good as the Polo’s gearbox maybe, the concept of a simple manual gearbox is bound to be so much more engaging in a hot hatch, after all its all about driver engagement here.

But before we put these cars to the test, let’s look at what lies on the surface.

Exteriors

I’ve always been a fan of the way the Punto looks, and when this Abarth version arrived at our office I quite liked the red stickering and detailing – and those Abarth Scorpion wheels certainly look cool. But when you look closer, the quality of the stickers aren’t all that great. And that lets it down because the Polo is a quality item through-and-through. There’s no margin for error here, as the Polo comes to the party with perfect panel gaps and excellent fit-and-finish. Distinguishing the GT TSI from its lesser brethren are the GT TSI stickers on the C-pillars and the piano black rear spoiler above the tailgate. All told, one thing is clear – the GT TSI is styled to be a sleeper while the Abarth Punto screams its intentions!

Park the two cars aside each other and the GT TSI looks more purposeful with a lower height while its sleek and simple lines give it an elegant profile. The Abarth Punto in comparison is taller and wider in comparison, which gives it a larger profile.

Interiors

Fiat has distinguished the Abarth Punto from the standard car with an Abarth branded steering wheel, aluminum pedals (of course with the Scorpion logo), contrast stitching for the seats and redesigned dials in the instrument binnacle.

While the quality of materials is pretty good inside the Punto, and build quality is decent, an awkward driving position lets it down – especially since it claims to be a purpose-oriented drivers’ car. Still, the car is decently equipped and comes with a nice stereo.

It’s when you get inside the Polo that you realize how superior its interiors are compared to the Punto. The plastic quality is better, and so is switchgear and fit-and-finish. There’s more equipment too.

Both cars get all black interiors. While the Abarth gets soft touch plastics across the centre of the dash the GT TSI misses out on the dual tone interiors of the standard car and there is nothing wrong with that. Although I do wish the black plastic beside the arm rest on the doors were of better quality as is the case with the standard car.

This aside, the GT TSI also has a superior stereo that allows you to scroll through your music (something you cannot do in the Punto) and even when you cut the ignition and fire it up again the stereo ensures you enjoy seamless Bluetooth phone connectivity. Similarly, you can electrically fold the mirrors even after cutting out the ignition. Little things matter and Volkswagen has got them right.

Both cars offer similar amounts of cabin space and comfortable seats, although the Polo’s rear bench offers a little more space and better under thigh support. The Polo offers 295 litres of boot space while the Punto can accommodate 280 litres of luggage.

Engine and Gearbox

Since the Abarth Punto is new here, let’s start with it. The car may very well share its four cylinder engine with the Linea, but power and torque outputs have been jacked up significantly to 145 bhp @ 5,500 rpm and 212Nm between 2,000 – 4,000 rpm, respectively. In comparison the GT TSI seems fairly trumped with 103 bhp of max power @ 5,000 rpm and 175Nm of peak torque spread between 1,500 rpm and 4,100 rpm.

These on paper numbers are clear when you drive the Abarth as well, initially there is some lag below 1,800 rpm. But, once past that, it’s immediately noticeable that the Abarth is the more brisk car here – although, the engine doesn’t rev quite as freely as I would have liked it to.

And then there’s the gearbox. The five-speed manual unit has rubbery gearshifts. The unit just feels vague, and that kills much of the driver engagement. Still, work past these factors and the Abarth Punto feels quite a bit faster than the GT TSI.

The GT TSI though has a more modern four cylinder engine featuring direct injection and turbocharging. Fire up the engine and it lets out a slightly gruff note when the engine is cold which settles down as the engine warms up, although you can’t hear it with the windows up. And that’s the nature of the GT TSI, it feels like a very sober and smooth car to drive under linear acceleration.

Put the gearbox in Sports mode and mash the right pedal though and the engine and transmission respond instantly. The car lets out a nice sporty snarl and charges ahead with urgency.

While the Abarth has more punch, at high speed it doesn’t feel anywhere near as rock solid as the VW. It also suffers from high engine and wind noise at those speeds. Meanwhile, the GT TSI behaves commendably and stays absolutely planted with the speedometer needle in the far reaches of its fairly generous gauge. The Abarth also suffers from high engine and wind noise at higher speeds.

If I have a complaint against the GT TSI, it is that when you are right at the limit and want a downshift for whatever reason, both sports and tiptronic mode are not as bang on the moment as a manual gearbox is. Honestly, a six-speed manual would have been more engaging. But then again, for most of the time this DSG unit is a more superior gearbox.

Ride and Handling 

The Punto has always been the best handler in its segment and the slightly lowered Abarth here is no different. The GT TSI has very neutral and safe drive dynamics. But its 185/60 section tyres run out of grip far sooner than the Abarth’s 195/55 section tyres. Where the GT TSI begins to understeer, the Abarth’s superior handling traits linked to the feelsome hydraulic steering and wider tyres allow you to carry some serious speeds around bends.

You know that phase where something is ‘’left behind in the dust’’. That does not apply here as the Abarth Punto leaves the GT TSI way behind in the corners. The Polo simply does not have the mechanical grip of the Abarth. And this is helped by the feelsome hydraulic steering in the Punto versus the direct but quite distant electronic power steering in the GT TSI.

Moving on to ride comfort, both cars offer excellent cushioning over poor sections of tarmac and road noise is minimal too. The Abarth does not compromise on ride comfort despite a stiffer setup than the standard car.

The Polo has a more comfort oriented setup with a little more roll, but it remains planted at higher speeds and is unnerved even over undulations at very high speeds, while the Abarth Punto is plainly superior around high speed corners.

Safety

The Volkswagen Polo GT TSI is equipped with ABS, dual front airbags, hill hold function and ESP. It also comes with a four star global NCAP safety rating. The TSI gets front disc brakes and rear drums, the brakes work well and the threshold for the ABS to kick in is high. And even when the ESP does kick in, there is no abrupt interruption that may disturb the driver.

The Fiat Abarth Punto too comes with dual front airbags and ABS with EBD. Fait has fitted the car with disc brakes all around. The end result is that the car has far superior braking ability than the Polo and does a great job of reigning in its higher power output.

Verdict

Its finally great to see some competition against the Polo GT TSI. The Abarth Punto is not just a headline maker with its more powerful engine, it genuinely is a more powerful car. But it is not necessarily a faster car. While it may accelerate and decelerate faster, the Abarth isn’t as stable as the GT TSI at higher speeds. Show the Abarth a corner though and it will simply disappear into the horizon as the Polo struggles to keep it in its sights.

So which is a superior hot hatchback ultimately? Well, I’d have to go with the GT TSI. It is a more refined and polished tool. The TSI is also better equipped, more comfortable and better built. The Abarth Punto on the other hand is rough around the edges, it crucially needs a better driving position and better gear shift quality.

Moving over to the final bit of the comparison, prices! The Volkswagen Polo GT TSI is priced at Rs. 8.58 lakh while the Fiat Abarth Punto sports a sticker price of Rs. 9.95 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. And it’s when you factor in this bit that the GT TSI starts making even more sense with its more modern powertrain and upmarket appeal.
