The battle between internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and electric vehicles (EVs) has been going on forever…okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the gist. Sure, it’s not that old, but the sheer number of discussions around this topic makes it seem like it is. So, here we are again, kicking off the new year with another EV vs ICE showdown.</p>

<p>EVs have truly come of age now. They offer exceptional range, and with an ever-expanding charging network, they have become more popular and practical than ever. So, when the opportunity for a trip knocked on my door, I decided to take the BMW iX. It’s an EV that I really like, and I am convinced that it can handle just about anything – including a 1,000km road trip! Shivank, however, wasn’t so sure. Upon hearing about my trip – and, more importantly, about my choice of vehicle – he was quick to express his doubts. He claimed that the X7 – a ‘proper’ BMW SUV – would be a better choice for the trip. So, he decided to shadow me for the entire trip – just to prove his point.</p>

<p>My destination was Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand – a drive of a little more than 400km one way. The journey would include a short crawl through Delhi’s traffic, followed by a leisurely highway cruise, and finally, a breathtaking ascent through winding roads.</p>

<p>I was confident that the iX, with its impeccale real-world range, would handle the trip without any trouble. Shivank, however, was convinced otherwise. He argued that there would be a steep drop in the iX’s range during the steep mountain ascent, and the colder temperatures would further drain the battery. And if that wasn’t enough, he also pointed out the lack of charging stations in such areas – another impediment to the whole exercise.</p>

<p>As it often happens at autoX, our friendly debate soon escalated into a full-fledged challenge – and just like that, off we went towards the same destination but with completely different approaches.</p>

<p>Since this was a challenge, we needed a clear condition – a qualifier, if you will. We agreed on a safety limit – if the X7’s reserve fuel light came on first, it would lose; on the other hand, if the iX’s SoC dropped to or below 10% mark, it would be game over for me. This way, neither of us would be scrambling for a petrol pump or a charging station at the last minute. With rules in place, I topped up the iX to 100%, and Shivank’s X7 guzzled down a full tank of gasoline. Now, here is a spoiler – it was a lot closer than you’d think!</p>

<h2>BMW ix: The Electric barnstormer</h2>

<p>Now, I mentioned in the beginning that I really like the iX EV – and here’s why. The xDrive50 variant that I picked up has more power, more torque, and more adrenaline-pumping ions coursing through its wires. The combined assault of two motors results in a whopping 516bhp and 765Nm of torque – a lot more than what the X7 spits.</p>

<p>On the highway, cruising was effortless, but it was in the mountains that the iX truly came alive. The moment you mash the accelerator, the iX jolts ahead with the same urgency as electricity through a metal bar submerged in seawater. On narrow mountain roads, where overtaking can be tricky, this explosive acceleration was a game-changer.</p>

<p>Despite being an SUV, the iX exhibited far less body roll than the X7, offering a more composed ride. I even got used to the oddly shaped steering wheel, which offers a surprisingly good amount of feedback and feel. I could easily gauge how the tyres were interacting with the road, the required steering angle, and the kind of mid-corner adjustments I had to make to go quickly around a bend. The suspension surprised me in more ways than one. Not only was it taut and responsive but also very absorbent. At no point in my journey did I feel unsettled or uncomfortable in any sense of the word.</p>

<p>The xDrive50 variant features a massive 105.2kWh battery pack, offering a WLTP claimed range of 635km on a full charge. When we started our journey, the car displayed an estimated 524km of range at 100% SoC. However, once we hit the road, I quickly realised that this number was actually a conservative estimate. As I drove, I noticed that the indicated range was dropping slower than expected – I was covering more kilometres than I was losing in terms of estimated range. Everything was going smoothly…until I hit a few snags.</p>

<p>The first was Shivank’s little trick. At one point, we stumbled upon an empty patch of land, and he roped me into a dirt-flinging contest – a challenge to see who could get their car to be rowdier. While the iX has the hardware to outdo the X7, its software kicks in too early, tying your hands like a worried mother stopping her child from playing in the mud. Not only did I lose the challenge (and some ego points), but I also burned through more range than I had planned. This meant that I was forced to drive more conservatively for the rest of the journey. Interestingly, the range depletion was more pronounced on the highway, but in the hills, where I was constantly working the A and B pedals, it resulted in a gain of indicated range, thanks to its strong regen modes.</p>

<p>Thankfully, the iX comes with a Maximum Range Mode, which helps conserve the battery by switching off things like seat ventilation and making the SUV behave a lot more gently. While there was still enough power to climb the mountain, I had to sacrifice the quick and effortless acceleration in this mode. But at this point, winning the challenge mattered more than enjoying the SUV’s performance. If a little compromise meant winning this comparison, I was more than willing to make that trade.</p>

<h2>BMW X7: The Fire-breathing Dinosaur</h2>

<p>Let me start with an honest confession – I’m a dyed-in-the-wool petrolhead. I have grown up sniffing petrol, and to my ears, the noise of an engine – or its exhaust note – is nothing less than a symphony. But does that mean I despise electric vehicles just because they lack the visceral drama of a combustion engine? Not really!</p>

<p>If I am being honest, I actually prefer driving an EV instead of a petrol or diesel vehicle these days for the simple reason that I find them more exciting and fun. But that’s for my daily commute.</p>

<p>Take an EV on a road trip, and it’s a completely different story. Frankly, EVs feel completely out of their depth during long-distance travel. You constantly have range anxiety, and there’s a lot of guesswork in terms of charging networks, especially in remote areas. All this saps the fun out of a road trip. So, what’s the point, really?</p>

<p>That’s precisely why I picked the X7 xDrive40i for this adventure. It costs more or less the same as the iX, but you see, it’s the real deal. It’s a mahoosive SUV, powered by a 375bhp/520Nm producing 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo petrol, and while it may be taller than the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it beggars belief how well it drives and handles. And, yeah, it comes with something called a fuel tank – an 80-litre one, to be exact. And guess what? You can fill it up anytime, anywhere. Convenient, isn’t it? Tell that to Aakash…</p>

<p>When I left Delhi with a tankful of fuel, the X7’s display showed a range of 780km. Of course, it had to be taken with a pinch of salt because, let’s be honest, there’s no universe in which a luxo-barge like the X7 would deliver that kind of fuel economy. Firstly, it’s a heavy bruiser, and secondly, it’s simply impossible to drive it with a light foot – because that B58 engine is as addictive as a drug! It’s the same engine that you get in the likes of the M340i and Z4, so it’s quite sporty. As a result, you always end up revving the nuts off it, irrespective of where you are.</p>

<p>That’s good for the enthusiast in you but bad for fuel economy – which is why I lost nearly 200km of range after covering just 115km of the journey! In the hills, the X7 is even more fun. The body movements are taut, the steering is sharp, and the noises (turbo whistle + induction + exhaust) that follow suit are glorious. On long and flowing mountain roads, with an able driver behind the wheel, I’d bet that it could keep up with any sports sedan, let alone a 500bhp EV. Of course, when pushed hard, it leans on its side like a speed boat, but it grips and grips and never falters. It’s simply brilliant. Plus, when the need for speed fades, just switch to Comfort mode, and suddenly, it transforms back into a luxury SUV. Its stellar ride quality and excellent ground clearance on bad roads are two things that the iX can only dream about.</p>

<p>That said, when the aim is to conserve every last drop of fuel, I must admit that the X7 is a lot thirstier than a marathon runner at the finish line – you’ll see exactly what I mean in the final pages.</p>

<h2>Range report</h2>

<p>Let’s cut to the chase. The X7 trumped the iX in this test, although it was by the smallest of margins! The iX hit the 10% SoC before the X7’s fuel reserve warning came on. However, that doesn’t paint the full picture. Just look (check the adjacent pictures) at how evenly matched the two were. From the start point, the iX managed to cover 365km before it conceded defeat to the X7. Although it took roughly 25km (390km) more for the X7 to hit the reserve. Both the vehicles were driven at more or less the same pace, maintaining nearly identical average speeds. That’s quite close, and we certainly weren’t expecting that!</p>

<p>Now let’s crunch some more numbers. The fuel expenses incurred on this trip for both vehicles. The EV, first. We used public fast chargers (60kW) to juice up the iX and it cost us ₹21/kWh. So a full charge was for about ₹2,200. Based on our experience and calculations during the trip, the iX would have easily done 420-430km on a full charge. Now, that translates to a cost/km of just ₹4.5 to 5! So, considering we did close to 850km (round-trip), the total cost of charging came out to be around ₹4,300. Staggering!</p>

  </p><p>Now, the X7. Well, it’s one heavy drinker, let’s just say that. We ran a reserve-to-reserve method to calculate the fuel economy during the trip, and the numbers turned out to be eye-watering, at least for Shivank! The X7 was gulping petrol at the rate of 15 litres per 100km! That translates to 6.6km/litre. Considering the average price of petrol ranges between ₹95-100, the cost/km comes out to be ₹15/km. And that multiplied by 850km equals nearly ₹13,000, which is close to three times of what the iX cost us during the trip! Want to know what is even more interesting? If you charge the iX at home, at least on the first leg of the journey, you would only end up paying ₹700-800 for a full charge, meaning a cost/km of just ₹2! Even if you happen to have a bottomless pit of money, that kind of difference is enough to make any grown person cry!</p>

<p>So, yes, Shivank and the X7 might have won this challenge, but you have got to ask... at what cost? </p>

Regardless of their mode of propulsion, SUVs aren’t really cut for hustling around corners. But, then, as we have so often seen and experienced with BMW SUVs, they don’t quite stick to the memo – they can handle the bendy bits, and how! The iX and X7 are no different. While they are sumptuously comfy to travel in, this doesn’t stop them from offering a remarkable driving experience. However, that’s not to say that they do things in the same manner. In fact, they are as different as chalk and cheese! The iX is a typical EV. It goes like stink in a straight line, but thanks to its low CG and sophisticated suspension, it can attack corners like no one’s business! It kind of surprised us with its composure, as it can corner without tossing you around. The X7, on the other, as you can see in the picture, rolls a lot more and definitely looks sloppier from the outside. But, from behind the wheel, it’s brilliant! Its quick steering and roadholding are impeccable. Not to mention, it rides better, and has more ground clearance. And while both the iX and X7 run on massive wheels – 22-inch and 21-inch, resepectively – the X7’s tyres are better suited for our bad roads. The iX’s P Zeros, meanwhile, turned to be quite puncture prone.</p>

BMW iX vs BMW X7 Comparison Review

Two BMWs – one on a full tank of petrol, the other on a full charge. Which one runs dry first?

The team at autoX is no stranger to the X1 – be it in its petrol, diesel, or electric guise. Regular readers will recall we extensively tested the standard iX1 in our four-way comparison against the Kia EV6 GT, Volvo XC40 Recharge, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. <p>However, BMW may have just checkmated the competition of that list with the new iX1 LWB. It gets more space and as an added bonus, it’s assembled right here in India. That not only makes it a lot more affordable than its ICE and electric counterparts but also its aforementioned rivals.</p>

<h2>Same, same but Different</h2>

<p>Let’s start with design and styling – an inherently subjective part of any review. If you liked the aesthetics of the standard (and now discontinued) iX1, you are going to love the new iX1 LWB. If not, well….I’m sorry but this one looks pretty much the same.</p>

<p>While the overall silhouette remains largely unchanged, the iX1 LWB has grown in length to 2,800mm – an increase of 116mm overall, with the wheelbase alone accounting for 108mm. While all that extra length has been added behind the B-pillar, its proportions still look balanced. Like a GQ model, it doesn’t suffer from an awkward long-legs-short-torso look – in fact it looks rather handsome.</p>

<p>Most of the design elements from the standard model have been carried over. However, one practical upgrade is the rear doors, which now open at a wider angle, making ingress and egress much easier for rear passengers. In terms of overall size, the iX1 LWB has now become closer to the previous-generation X3 – precisely the positioning that BMW was aiming for.</p>

<p>As a result, what you now get is the widest and tallest cabin in the segment, offering ample legroom to lounge and relax. Even with two passengers over six feet, neither will have any reason to complain. That said, the under-thigh support is a bit of an issue due to the tall footboard – an unfortunate byproduct of the ICE-to-EV conversion process. To further enhance the rear-seat comfort, BMW has increased the legroom by 109mm and even extended the seat cushion length by 15mm. While features remain similar and aplenty, I do wish BMW had gone a step further by adding separate AC blower controls and sunblinds – it would have been a perfect finishing touch for an otherwise well-appointed cabin.</p>

<h2>Single &amp; Ready to Mingle</h2>

<p>Now, while the iX1 LWB gains extra space, it sacrifices a bit of performance. To make the price tag more appealing, BMW has opted for a single-motor setup instead of the twin-motor configuration of the standard iX1. Essentially, the iX1 LWB now gets a front-wheel drivetrain with a 66.4kWh battery pack, producing 204bhp and 250Nm of peak torque. When you step on the throttle pedal, there’s a noticeable shove but not as instantaneous and explosive as offered by the twin-motor setup of the standard iX1. However, thanks to the FWD configuration, it feels lighter and more nimble – it behaves more like a lukewarm hatchback than an all-out luxury electric SUV.</p>

<p>There is less understeer, and the dynamics feel sharper than the twin-motor version’s. In relentless Indian traffic, it’s light, agile, and easy to throw around, making it surprisingly fun to drive in everyday conditions.</p>

<h2>It’s All About Family!</h2>

<p>If Dominic Toretto were more practical, lived in India, and needed an everyday runabout for the family, I’d ask him not to overlook the iX1 LWB. It offers significantly more space, making it a better and more well-rounded family SUV. And since it’s now assembled in India, it has a price tag of ₹49 lakh (ex-showroom). A luxury family SUV with a BMW badge on the bonnet that costs less than most rivals? That‘s a dream come true for many. And the best part? Despite its practicality, the iX1 LWB doesn’t compromise on BMW’s signature driving excitement.   </p>

BMW iX1 LWB Review

BMW X1’s electric LWB iteration is here to spice things up, offering X3-like space with a price tag of ₹49 lakh. Is it too good to be true?

<p><a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/bmw/">BMW</a> has revealed the facelifted <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/bmw/ix/">iX</a> for the global market, with updated styling and improved performance. Design-wise, the iX facelift boasts a subtle yet striking improvement. The new headlamps have vertical LED daytime running lights, while the signature closed-off grille includes updated graphics. The rear design remains intact, with only the xDrive50 logo.&nbsp;Similar to the exterior, the new variant of the BMW EV is pretty similar to the xDrive40. It has a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.9-inch touchscreen, and crystal switches on the centre&nbsp;console and doors, among others. &nbsp;</p>

<p>When the BMW iX electric SUV was first brought to Indian shores in 2021, it was unlike any other BMW. It looked bulbous, had a minimalistic and eco-friendly interior and most importantly, lacked the roar of a combustion engine. While it was a good vehicle to drive, it was not exactly what fans of the Bavarian brand have come to expect. But that was the xDrive40 model of the iX. Fast forward to the year 2024 and BMW has decided to let the higher xDrive50 model lose on the Indian streets. With its twin motors, higher output and bigger tyres, does the iX become a proper driver’s car, much like many other Bimmers?</p>

<p>The very first thing you should know about the xDrive50 is that it has two motors - one on the front axle and one on the rear. Together, these motors generate 516bhp of peak power and 765Nm of peak torque. For reference, that is 194bhp and 135Nm more than the model which has already been on sale for a while. The top speed is still limited to 200kmph but the acceleration time has gone down. The iX can lunge to 100km/h from a standstill in a claimed time of 4.6 seconds. This SUV can easily leave a lot of fast vehicles in the dust, even as you are reaching triple-digit figures on the instrument cluster.</p>

<p>Another thing that makes driving the upgraded <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/bmw-ix-becomes-the-brands-best-selling-luxury-ev-in-india-113940/">BMW iX</a> fun is the knowledge that there is enough torque to let the tail slide even with the traction control switched on. You can light up the rear with a healthy dab of the right pedal and then hear the tyres squeal in joy. The quirky hexagonal steering wheel is precise enough to let you correct your course.</p>

<h2>BMW iX xDrive50: Battery &amp; Charging</h2>

<p>BMW has also equipped the higher variant of the iX with a larger battery pack - 105.3kWh to be precise. The claimed range figure sits at 635km per charge (WLTP) but we did not have time to do a proper range test. Driving the iX was so fun that I was not exactly driving with range in mind. Despite this, I never felt a hint of range anxiety. The iX support 195kW DC fast charging which does 10-80% in 35 minutes, as per company claims. The more sensible 11kW charger takes 11 hours to completely charge the vehicle while the 22kW option almost halves the time. I feel that once you do charge the iX completely and are not driving like a maniac all the time (which is very hard to do), you can easily go for 3-4 days without having to charge the vehicle.</p>

<h2>BMW iX xDrive: Handling &amp; Ride Quality</h2>

<p>All the power and torque in the world is useless if you cannot deploy it properly. I have driven a few EVs that produce more torque than they can usefully handle and the iX is definitely not one of those. With the higher variant, you get wider 275/40, 22-inch tyres all around that grip the road well. Combine this with the upgraded air suspension and already competent chassis and you have an SUV that manages to confidently stick to the ground even when subjected to high G-forces. Even while braking hard, the SUV does not swerve out of shape. The suspension also delivers a great morning ride experience.</p>

<p>The air suspension also comes in handy when you switch to the Sport mode. It enables the SUV to squat by 10mm, increasing its aerodynamic efficiency. Conversely, when tackling tough terrain, the suspension can be raised by 20mm. Thankfully, the ground clearance of the iX, even in the standard setting, is 203mm which is more than enough for most obstacles on city roads. I was also pleasantly surprised by the ride quality offered by the iX. It glides over bad roads like a proper luxury SUV. So, you do not have to compromise on comfort - as is the case with a lot of vehicles.</p>

<h2>BMW iX xDrive50: Exterior</h2>

<p>The exterior design of the iX xDrive50 remains similar to that of the lower variant. You can differentiate between the two by spotting the badge at the rear or the bigger tyres on the sides.</p>

<p>The clean surfaces of the iX and the lack of sharp lines are not to my liking. While not ugly by any means, they are not as interesting as the other BMWs. If you did not like how the iX looked when it was launched back in 2021, this new variant is not going to change your mind in 2024.</p>

<h2>BMW iX xDrive50: Interior</h2>

<p>The interior of the iX xDrive50 is pretty similar to the lower variant in terms of space and functionality. Being an EV, there is no transmission tunnel and there is additional empty space where one would expect a central floor console in a traditional car. The seats are very comfortable and have a massage function as well. I also really like the look of the clear crystal buttons and rotary dial spread across the cabin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;My biggest issue with the cabin is the lack of controls. While it looks aesthetically pleasing and neat, accessing most features will most likely mean that you have to come to a halt because most of them are buried within the touchscreen display. I did really like how large and clear the head-up display (HUD) was. It fits with the overall size of the SUV and is perhaps one of the best in the business. Once again, much like the exterior, if you did not like the interior of the base variant, your opinions are likely to not change after seeing the xDrive 50. However, it is still a spacious and premium cabin to be in.</p>

<h2>BMW iX xDrive50: Verdict</h2>

<p>With the iX xDrive50, <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/bmw/">BMW</a> has yet again proven why they are synonymous with performance luxury vehicles. Despite being a hulking great mammoth with a massive (and heavy) battery pack, the iX drives with precision. There is no lack of torque to keep you giggling like a child and the range is adequate for longer trips too. What it lacks are the flaws that are inherent to the iX itself, including a rather mundane design and a featureless cabin. Spending the extra money for the xDrive50 over the 40 might not be for everyone, but if your sole goal is driving pleasure then you won’t regret the bigger figure on the cheque.</p>

<p>If you are acquainted with the tales of the Mahabharata, the city of Indraprastha would be familiar to you. Although the location of this city is approximated around the Purana Qila area, significant geological evidence validating its existence remains elusive. Turning to recorded history, the first walled city of India was established under the Tomar dynasty by Anangpal Singh Tomar I. He named the fort Lal Kot, which was the original Red Fort of Delhi. Buddhist texts and scriptures dating back to Ashoka’s reign refer to Indraprastha as the capital of Kuru Mahajanpada. This traces Delhi’s history as the capital of an empire back to ancient times. Lal Kot was later overtaken by Prithviraj Chauhan and was renamed Qila Rai Pithora. Today, the remains of the fort walls can still be found in the Mehrauli area, with the famous Qutub Minar right across the road. While the park and the monument are open for exploration without any fee, the absence of clear markings may pose a slight challenge in locating them. Nevertheless, cocooned in the comfort of the BMW iX, it wasn’t all that of a bother. I highly recommend this site for anyone seeking an authentic, unvarnished encounter with a piece of history.</p>

<p>The year was 1639, and Shah Jahan, the reigning monarch of the Mughal Empire, recognised the significant geological advantage that a more centrally located administrative headquarters could have for his ambition to rule the entirety of India and, thereby, shifted his capital to Delhi and commissioned the construction of what we know today as Red Fort. Interestingly, the architect who built Red Fort was Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who was also responsible for the creation of the iconic Taj Mahal. The Lal Qila not only etched the significance of Delhi in history books but also laid the foundation for it to become the new capital of independent India.</p>

<p>The Red Fort was also the site where Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, delivered his pivotal speech and hoisted the tricolour above its gate. Today, its surrounding areas are internationally renowned for various cuisines and buildings that exude old-world charm, with the BMW iX bringing along a spark of modernity. <p>Nestled along Burari Road, there lies a lesser-known quaint gem called Coronation Park. However, beneath its quiet charm lies a link to a significant but painful aspect of Indian history – the British Empire. The British invented the concept of Durbars, a gathering of people, inspired by Hindu and Muslim traditions. Given Delhi’s rich history of royal events, the Park was chosen to host the first Delhi Durbar in 1877 – an event organised to commemorate Queen Victoria as the Empress of India.</p>

<p>In 1911, the Coronation Park hosted its third Durbar to not only celebrate King George V’s ascension as the Emperor of India but also to mark the shift of the capital of British India from Calcutta to Delhi. To mark the occasion, a memorial was erected exactly at the same place where King George V and Queen Mary sat in the Durbar in 1911. The Park is also home to statues of various former British monarchs.</p>

<p>Free to visit, the Park has been well maintained and is a quiet place to relax and reflect on the history of the country. So, visiting a monument like this in the BMW iX made a lot of sense as its quietness only added to the serenity of the place.</p>

<h2>Khan Market – 20th Century</h2>

<p>Following the dramatic economic reforms of the 1990s, a lot of commercial hubs emerged, and Khan Market was one such place, which continues to be a prominent commercial centre of the city. After Independence, Delhi continued to thrive as India’s capital, witnessing substantial growth. <p>Established in 1951, the Khan Market complex originally comprised double-story buildings, with shops on the ground floor and residential quarters above. <p>Finally, we come to one of the most popular neighbouring districts of Delhi – Gurugram. A popular destination for Delhi’s youth, Gurugram is favoured as an ideal locale by new-age entrepreneurs and multinational companies. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that it’s a model town for contemporary India. Our final destination in this city is Cyber Hub – a sprawling shopping and food complex, which exudes international standards. Surrounded by modern residences and offices, Cyber Hub serves as a fitting conclusion to our journey, for not only does it bring our story to the present but also encapsulates the essence of future possibilities and promises.</p>

BMW iX Delhi Travel - Tales of The Sultanate

Karan Mathur embarks on a journey across Delhi to unravel its significance, both historically and as the administrative capital of the country.

<p>BMW has always been known for making enthusiast-centric cars and the Bavarian carmaker demonstrated this ability by launching the M2 in India with a manual gearbox. We sit down with the man responsible for making it happen as he explains his philosophy.</p>

<p><strong>Vikram, I drove here in a manual M2 because I wanted to meet the man responsible for bringing us a proper performance car with a manual gearbox. Did Munich think you were crazy to ask for an M car with a manual in India?</strong></p>

<p>I think Munich thought that I'm listening to my customers. Every time I’ve attended M events in the past, I get requests saying, "When can we get a manual in India? When can we feel the real raw power of M?” So, I'm really proud that we brought in the M2, which is a pure 'M' car with a manual. Customers want a car that they can take to the track or out for an early morning spin, of course not to commute in on a daily basis. So, we’re not looking at big sales numbers, instead, what I'm looking at is the smile on the faces of these customers. The number of smiles equals the number of sales. You’ve driven it, and you would have smiled multiple times – and that's what I'm looking for!</p>

<p><strong>Another car that’s a paradigm shift is the new BMW i7.</strong></p>

<p>When we launched the 7 Series and the i7 in February 2023, we made a clear statement that we want to redefine the class of luxury. And already we have delivered more cars than we sold in the entire year of previous-generation 7 Series. I'm happy that we started a revolution in the luxury space, and I'll give you two fun facts about our performance across the price segments.</p>

<p>One is the luxury class, which includes the 7, i7,&nbsp; X7 and the XM, which contributed to 20% of our sales in the first half of 2023, and this segment grew by 128% Year-on-Year. At the other end of the spectrum, we have the X1, where we’ve seen a growth of 50% in this segment. For us, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/bmw/x1/">X1</a> alone has contributed to 20% of our sales in the first half, with two-thirds of these customers being first-time premium buyers. And 56% of these customers are between the ages of 31 and 45. So, really excited about how these two ends of the spectrum are growing. And in the middle sits the 3 GL, which accounts for 20% of our sales. And now, we’ve just launched the X5 – so we have four strong pillars.</p>

<p><strong>In the luxury class, at the top end, if you didn’t have any ICE offerings and offered only EVs would your customers even notice – meaning is it just early adopters who are opting for EVs, or has the market evolved such that this is what your customers actually want today?</strong></p>

<p>I think there are individual customers who like EVs and individual customers who will continue with ICE. That's why our strategy is very clear. We will give this power of choice to the customer. We will not decide for them.</p>

<p>As far as EVs go, we are the only automaker offering four distinctive products – the Mini electric hatch, i4 mid-size electric sedan, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/bmw/ix/">iX</a> electric SUV – and the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/bmw/i7/">i7</a>, which is a limousine in electric. In the first half of this year, we own 50% of the premium electric space. If I look at the iX, it alone outsells all the other electric premium cars combined. This is the fastest-growing segment for us actually at the moment.</p>

<p><strong>Are there plans to manufacture EVs in India?</strong></p>

<p>Absolutely. 95% of what we sell in India, we locally manufacture. EV is still a relatively new technology. The battery and motor technology are evolving very fast. We started with the i3 in 2013, so we are already on Gen 5 of our battery technology and are working on Gen 6. So, I think we need to find a sweet spot before we localize. When we find the technology is stable, the volumes are reaching the threshold, you'll see us producing here. It's only a matter of time.</p>

<p><strong>It's been a busy year already, but what else is coming up from BMW?</strong></p>

<p>When we started this year, we said we would launch 19 cars and 3 bikes, so over 22 products across our three brands. The <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/bmw/">BMW</a> X5 is our 12th car launch this year. We've already launched two bikes, so there are still seven more cars to come and one more bike, and maybe some surprises in there as well – so just watch the space for the next six months...</p>

<p>The electric vehicle (EV) line-up from BMW, which is still modest but expanding, has had some success in India. In fact, the German carmaker dominates the country's luxury EV market. In contrast to popular belief, the company's EV growth story is not being driven by the reasonably priced i4 vehicle but by the iX electric SUV, which has become the luxury automaker's best-selling battery-powered vehicle in India. One of three BMW-badged EVs presently available for purchase in India arrived at the end of 2021. There are four battery-powered vehicles offered in India by BMW Group, including the Mini Cooper SE. Although the firm chose to refrain from revealing precise sales data for its EV line-up, it has acknowledged that domestic EV sales in only the first half of this year are already 46% more than what they were in the entire 2022.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, BMW India recently declared that its sales for the BMW, Mini, and BMW Motorrad brands in the first half of the year, the first quarter, and June were the highest ever. Going into the details, 4,667 bikes were sold by BMW Motorrad in H1 – a total of 5,867 BMW and Mini units. In India, the company primarily sells the i7, iX, i4, and Mini SE, which together account for 50% of sales in the premium EV market. The BMW iX is both the best-selling luxury EV in India and the electric car with the most sales worldwide. BMW claims that in H1 2023, the brand delivered 11 times as many EVs as it did in H1 2022. A substantial EV charging network, including over 35 BMW Group dealers in India, supports the development of EV sales. So, without any further ado, let's know more about the iX model.</p>

<h2>BMW iX: Battery and Power</h2>

<p>The new BMW iX electric SUV is only available in the BMW iX xDrive40 level and comes in colours like Mineral White, Phytonic Blue, Black Sapphire, and Sophisto Grey. The e-SUV is propelled by the fifth-generation BMW eDrive system, which includes two electric motors, an electric all-wheel-drive system, and a single-speed gearbox. The unit can generate 326bhp of maximum power and accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds. The three driving modes – Personal, Sport, or Efficient – can be selected depending on the requirements of the driver. The BMW IconicSounds Electric produces driving sound and other pedestrian alerts.</p>

<h2>BMW iX: Range and Charging Time</h2>

<p>The iX features two high-voltage lithium-ion batteries with a combined capacity of 76.6kWh, which can allow the car to travel for 425 kilometres before needing to be charged. The batteries can be charged up to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes by a 150kW DC charger and&nbsp;in 73 minutes by a 50kW DC charger. An 11kW AC charger can charge it to 100 per cent in 7 hours, while&nbsp;a standard 50kW charger can charge the battery to a 95-kilometre range in 10 minutes and a 100-kilometre range in 21 minutes. Further, the model boasts a top speed of 200km/h.</p>

<h2>BMW iX: Features and Market Competitors</h2>

<p>A hexagonal steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a sizable 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and a heads-up display are some of the new features added to the BMW iX. The car has also received a superb 5-Star safety rating from Euro NCAP. In the Indian market, the BMW iX competes with the likes of the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tron SUV, and Mercedes-Benz EQC.</p>
