F1 Owner Liberty Media Completes Acquisition of MotoGP

MotoGP joins Liberty Media’s portfolio alongside F1, opening doors to global growth, new content, and potential crossovers with Formula 1.

Liberty Media, owner of Formula 1, has completed its acquisition of the MotoGP World Championship, according to Dorna Sports. The American entertainment conglomerate, who has had the exclusive rights to Formula 1 since 2016, will be offering an estimated sum of 4.2 billion euros to buy Dorna. Dorna has had authority over MotoGP since 1992 and furthermore supervises WorldSBK and the MotoE World Cup. According to the deal, Liberty Media will purchase 86% of MotoGP, while the current administration will keep about 14% ownership of the company. The sellers will receive about 65% of the transaction in cash, 21% in shares of Series C Liberty Formula One common stock, and 14% in retained MotoGP management equity.

The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of the year, pending clearances and permissions from competition and foreign investment agencies in different countries. Although all sides agreed on the conditions some time ago, the ratification of the contract has been delayed beyond expected. Originally, there were plans to announce the relocation before to the start of the MotoGP season in early March.

MotoGP is a global league with a loyal, enthusiastic fan base, captivating racing and a highly cash-flow generative financial profile. F1 Owners Liberty Media Acquire MotoGP Rights for €4.2 Billion

The owner of Formula 1, Liberty Media, has reached an agreement to acquire the promoter of MotoGP. Back in 2016, the USA-based company bought Formula One Group.

The CryptoDATA RNF team has encountered a dramatic development in its journey, as the MotoGP Selection Committee has announced the revocation of the team's grid positions for the forthcoming 2024 season. The committee, comprising members from FIM, IRTA, and Dorna Sports, issued a statement on Monday announcing their resolution to disqualify the team from the roster for the year 2024. The committee will evaluate applications for a new Independent Team that will utilise Aprilia machinery as a replacement on the grid.

The statement said: "The MotoGP Selection Committee, comprising members of FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports, have decided not to select the CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP Team for the 2024 season. Repeated infractions and breaches of the Participation Agreement affecting the public image of MotoGP have obliged this decision. The Selection Committee will be reviewing applications for a new Independent Team, using Aprilia machinery, to join the MotoGP class grid for 2024."

The statement was made the day before the first 2024 preseason test at Circuit Ricardo Tormo, and neither the team nor Aprilia have responded as of yet.

<h2>MotoGP: CryptoDATA RNF Aprilia Team</h2>

After Petronas and the Sepang Racing Team pulled out of MotoGP at the end of the 2021 season, the RNF team was formed. Razali, the former team manager of SRT, bought the team and fielded Yamaha motorcycles in 2022 before striking a partnership with Aprilia for the current season.

Along with Razali's plan to sell a controlling stake in the team to the Romanian company CryptoDATA in 2023, the team also acquired a title partnership with the corporation. Despite these advances, the team has been unable to attain considerable success. RNF finished the 2022 season in 11th place out of 12 teams and is now in ninth place out of 11 teams.

In the end, the CryptoDATA RNF Aprilia Team was able to clinch the 8th place position in the rankings for the 2023 MotoGP Teams.

<h2>MotoGP: 2024 Valencia Test</h2>

The season finale featured an epic battle between Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin, finishing off an outstanding racing season.&nbsp;

Marc Marquez will ride a Ducati for the first time on November 28 at the Valencia postseason test. The speed he shows in his first outing after leaving Honda could set the tone for the rest of the 2024 season. As if that wasn't enough, Franco Morbidelli, who recently left Yamaha to join Pramac, will be making his Ducati debut as well.

Meanwhile, Alex Rins will inherit the Yamaha, marking a significant change for the skilled racer. The forthcoming test is more than just a performance trial for well-known names for newcomers like Pedro Acosta, who will be testing MotoGP gear for the first time on November 28th.

MotoGP: FIM and Dorna Reject RNF Aprilia's Entry for 2024 Championship

The 2024 season will not see the CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP Team compete due to repeated violations and infractions of the participation agreement, according to FIM. 

There have been significant shifts in MotoGP in recent seasons, with the emphasis seemingly moving from Japan to Europe. In reality, it is easy to overlook the fact that the Japanese manufacturers absolutely dominated the industry from 2008 to 2021, with Ducati just regaining their title of global champion in 2022. The Honda-Marquez dominance of recent years, however, seems to have ended in 2019. Yamaha, who won with Quartararo in 2021, continues to use an M1 that is currently in net horsepower debt to competitor motorcycles after Suzuki withdrew, having given Mir the championship in 2020 and winning the last race in 2022. These days, Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia are the most competitive motorcycles and Rins' triumph with Honda in Austin was due to a confluence of circumstances that are unlikely to recur this year. The reduction in competitiveness has many in the paddock scared that the two remaining Japanese manufacturers may pull out of MotoGP, and nobody wants to see champions like Marquez and Quartararo struggling to keep up.

<h2>MotoGP: Dorna in Discussion with European Manufacturers</h2>

Something seems to be in motion to effect changes in the existing environment, and sources claim that Dorna is well aware of the need of restoring balance amongst rivals. After the Stoner period, Ducati found itself with a bike that was indigestible to any rider, and this situation has some similarities. To aim to bring the season's top riders closer together, the Open period started with bikes that allowed for significant adjustments during the year. Engineers now have greater leeway in terms of private testing, engine autonomy, and overall design independence.&nbsp;

To prevent the possibility of the two heavyweights really deciding to give up their commitment to MotoGP, Dorna is reportedly encouraging Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia to provide concessions to Honda and Yamaha in advance. Ducati has previously ruled out altering the racing weekend schedule for the next season. The plan was to make FP2 the sole session that counted towards qualifying for Q2, with FP1 serving as an optional practice that wouldn't affect placement. Ducati was unwilling to agree since it now has an obvious technological edge that it desperately wants to protect.

<h2>MotoGP: Honda’s 2023 Season</h2>

Marc Marquez had a disastrous weekend at both Sachsenring and Assen, forcing him to withdraw from both grand prix. In Mugello, Marquez met with top Honda officials to discuss the company's reaction to its current predicament. The future of this situation will go a long way toward calming fears that the RC213V has caused an increase in injury rates among Honda riders.

The meeting lasted for a total of 25 minutes in Honda's RV. Marquez and Aoyama met with Honda Racing Corporation (the racing division) president Koji Watanabe, who has overseen both the motorcycle and car operations since last year. Those closest to the riders are concerned that they may suffer another injury.&nbsp;

This has not been a good year for Repsol Honda. Honda, though, has a reputation to uphold and will continue to fight for a return to MotoGP's upper echelons.&nbsp;The Japanese has already helped Red Bull Racing in F1 to win the drivers' and constructors' titles. Marc Marquez has demonstrated his confidence in the Japanese giant by saying he believes Honda has what it takes to return to the top of the grid.

According to reports, Dorna is urging Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia to make concessions to Honda and Yamaha before the two giants decide to really withdraw their commitment from MotoGP.

After multiple delays and&nbsp;cancellations due to the COVID-19 outbreak, MotoGP will be back in action from July 19&nbsp;as the FIM has released the revised calendar for the 2020 season.&nbsp;

MotoGP fans, rejoice! The 2020 season looks all set to kick-off from July as the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) has published the new provisional calendar for this year’s racing action. Thanks to the COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting travel restrictions, MotoGP in 2020 will now be a 13-round event with all races set to be held within Europe. That said, overseas races in&nbsp;America, Argentina, Thailand and Malaysia are provisionally listed on the calendar, but these rounds&nbsp;will only be held if conditions permit.

As was proposed earlier, the season will kick start with a double-header at Jerez (Spain) with back-to-back races in a week. The first race is scheduled for July 19, while the second will be held on July 26. After Jerez, the following rounds will be held at Brno (Czech Republic) and Red Bull Ring (two races; Austria) in August; San Marino (two races) in September; one race each at Catalunya (Spain) and Le Mans (France), and Aragon (two races; Spain) in October. The final two races&nbsp;of the&nbsp;European&nbsp;rounds&nbsp;will be held at Valencia (Spain) in November.

The overseas races at COTA (America), Termas de Rio Hondo (Argentina), Buriram (Thailand) and Sepang (Malaysia) will be confirmed before July 31, after assessing the situation. In any case, the 2020 season will finish no later than December 13 and will have a maximum of 17 rounds (including the Qatar GP in March, where only Moto2 and Moto3 races were held), says Dorna. This would mean that one of four overseas rounds will be dropped from the calendar after July 31.

The European rounds will be held behind closed doors, meaning no spectators or media will be allowed at any of the circuits. Only the riders and essential staff from the teams and paddock will be present at the races in Europe.

That said,&nbsp;Dorna's official statement read, ‘All dates, events and the eventual attendance of spectators are subject to the evolution of the pandemic and the approval of the corresponding Governments and authorities.’ And this could mean that a&nbsp;limited number of spectators may be allowed in later rounds if&nbsp;the situation gets better.
