To commemorate their 70th anniversary, Ferrari have revealed limited edition model line up at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
Ferrari have revealed a special edition model line up in addition to a new celebratory logo to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the iconic Italian brand.
The special logo will feature on the LaFerrari Aperta for the first time after which it will be available on the special edition models which include the F12 Berlinetta, 488 GTB, California T and the 488 Spider with 70 different individual liveries created by the Tailor Made.
The 70 different liveries configuration will be available with all the above mentioned cars, but each livery will feature on a single model only once which will result in a maximum of 350 cars with individual identities.
At the Ferrari stand in Paris, Ferrari have showcased four cars at their stand with such liveries. The cars are as follows: -

F12berlinetta: “The Stirling”, which has been inspired by the 250 GT Berlinetta SWB, winner of the 1961 Tourist Trophy with Stirling Moss.

488 Spider: “The Green Jewel”, pays tribute to the green livery of the 365 P2 fielded by the British David Piper Racing team which won the Nine Hours of Kyalami in both 1965 and 1966 and the Trophée d’Auvergne at Clermont-Ferrand in 1996.

Additionally, at the Taylor Made area, another example of the 488 Spider that pays tribute to the 1953 375 MM bodied by PininFarina with the three-layer Bianco italia exterior colour.
Ferrari have also announced a world tour that will include 60 different countries which will feature classic and modern Ferraris with the celebration finale that will conclude in an exclusive event in Ferrari’s home in Maranello.

Say hello to Ferrari’s latest one-off supercar – the 458 MM Speciale. It’s exclusively built for an “enthusiastic British owner”, and is an extra special version of the 458 Speciale. This means the car has been designed based on the requirements of the unnamed owner. And while most of us generally differ over personal tastes, this one is likely to click with all with its tastefully done exterior upgrades.

Designed by Ferrari’s in-house styling centre, the 458MM is essentially a 458 Speciale underneath but comes with some unique mods. On its owner’s special request, the designers have given a ‘visor’ effect to the glasshouse of the car by blacking out A-pillars – which Ferrari says is inspired by the 1984 GTO. The paintwork is Bianco Italia (Italian for white) and has an Italian flag strip running down the centre of the bodywork. Speaking of bodywork, it’s all-new as well since it is handcrafted in aluminium with carbon-fibre front and rear bumpers.

Among other visual updates, the 458 MM Speciale has a new side air scoop and a tail-spoiler. And because it’s a track-bred Ferrari these exterior revisions are not just for mere show - the bodywork now allows the coolant radiators to be mounted more steeply, allowing better heat dissipation. The front and rear light clusters have been modified as well. The gorgeous looking wheels are exclusive to the one-off creation.

Inside, the design and layout will remain as is but the interior has been crafted with Cioccolato leather upholstery with white stitching and comes with an enhanced audio system.

Ferrari has not revealed the engine specs of the 458 MM, but it’s understood that it will come powered by the same 597bhp/540Nm rated 4.5-litre V8 – the last of the naturally aspirated breed from Maranello. Power will of course go strictly to rear wheels.

The Ferrari 458 Italia and 458 Speciale have already hit the end of the road. The turbocharged 488 GTB has now replaced the 458 range.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale is a really special car, even for a manufacturer that only makes exceedingly quick super sports car. We are at the Vairano Ring to tackle some quick laps in this Ferrari. Here's how it went.

Is there more to the Speciale than the stripe down the bonnet? Absolutely, it’s more powerful and lighter than its sister – a real laboratory for technical solutions.

Despite the fact that a more special name than ‘Speciale’ could have been thought up, or the fact that there are neither mats nor a glovebox, or that the Herbie style bicoloured stripe doesn’t exactly smack of understatement (it’s optional, luckily) – despite all these terrible shortcomings – the Ferrari 458 Speciale is one hell of a car, and one that catapults the already excellent driving experience of the standard version (if we can call it that) to stratospheric levels.

In spite of closely resembling its sister, the latest product from Maranello comes with so many technical novelties that, after close inspection, the only remaining links with the original model are the V8 engine, the styling, and the mid-rear engined architecture. The intention of the Ferrari engineers, in fact, was not so much to improve a car that was already a benchmark of dynamic refinement, but that of the developing a novel formula for addressing a new clientele. Rich people, in other words – but not rich people who simply want to show off by taking their car out for a cruise, but those want to give vent to their very own racing pretensions by spending their weekends on the track. The Speciale is made for them, and all the modifications have been made accordingly. It’s immediately evident how the Speciale is much more than a simply ‘special’ version of the 458. It’s not merely a matter of added performance, further exalted by the enhancement of the 4.5 litre engine from 570 to 605bhp (making it the car with the highest specific naturally-aspirated power output in history), even if the sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 3 seconds flat leaves no doubt about the much more powerful engine. Marking the difference is, above all, the drivability – which has become even sharper and smoother.

Transforming the driver

Beyond the aerodynamic innovations, the effects of which manifest themselves principally at high speeds (therefore not on a tortuous track like Fiorano, where the first drive took place), the fundamental novelty in terms of dynamics is the introduction of the SSC (Slide Slip Control). It allows an enhanced control over weight distribution. It’s designed to unleash everything the car has to offer onto the track (in fact, it only works with the manettino setting on Race or CT off). By altering the various parameters, like lateral acceleration, yaw angle and speed, and by working with other systems like the E-Diff and the F1-Trac, it allows more-or-less an automatic drift without having to sacrifice a millisecond. And if the driver happens to overdo it, the electronic angels do their usual work, returning the car to its trajectory and killing the throttle when necessary. But if the driver learns to accommodate the rear-end slide by applying a touch of opposite lock at the right time, it squirts out of the curves at warp speed – thus making the perfect lap a mere formality. The only problem is that, once addicted to such ease, one forgets that each bhp of horsepower drags with it a little more than 2kg. Wanting to be extravagant, we disengaged all the electronic nannies and found ourselves with an object far less willing to artificially enhance the driving quality of the human at the wheel. The experiment rapidly came to a crashing end with an ignominious spin-out in front of the Ferrari technicians and testers.

All of this is to say that, regardless of whether the controls are on or off, the Speciale needs a minimum amount of apprenticeship which, once completed, gives the driver the understanding that the professional results are only to be obtained through the use of active systems. For instance, our best time at Fiorano was a half-a-second better than Michael Schumacher’s time in 2008 with the 430 Scuderia during a testing lap done for Quattroruote. So, as you can see the Speciale is one hell of a laboratory for solutions that will be adopted by Ferrari in future.

HOW TO UNLEASH ALL THE HORSEPOWER

The 135bhp/liter figure was not obtained by remapping the control unit, but by meticulously honing every component. The fluid dynamics of the combustion chamber were revised in order to optimize the intake and exhaust phases; the geometry of the exterior suction duct and the interior of the head with shortening of the trumpets (-10 mm) and a higher permeability on the profile for valve lift (+5%). Also new are the profiles lobes on the camshaft, which further increases the valve lift favouring average pressure reduction on the pumping cycle. Thanks to the redesigning of the extraction systems (filters, airbox and carbon trumpets), and exhaust (made of aluminium), it’s been possible to reduce engine weight by 8kgs. The F1 dual-clutch transmission also adopts a new control logic.

It happened at a press launch for a new car. It was a moment that was to change everything. After years and years of staunch defence, something clicked and I had to switch sides. 
Progress, it seems, is inevitable. You either keep up, or you get left behind. Confused? Let me explain.

Walking to dinner after a press conference, one of the senior journalists in our group lamented that the Jaguar F-Type wasn’t a proper sports car “because it doesn’t have a manual gearbox.” And then it occurred to me – I had always jumped to the defence of manual cars, exalting them as the pinnacle of driving pleasure. Using paddles to shift, no matter how much quicker they are, just didn’t cut it in my eyes. But the words that next came out of my mouth betrayed my shift in feelings. 
“So, the Ferrari 458 isn’t a proper sports car, then? What about the McLaren 12C?”

Damn it. I’ve just admitted it. Driving enjoyment isn’t solely dependent on a car’s gearbox.

If there’s any doubt, get behind the wheel of a 458 Italia. Or Speciale, if you can arrange that. The steering is sublime and so fast, the ride is excellent and the handling is just insane. Its throttle response is perfection and yes, that dual-clutch gearbox is simply one of the best on sale. Pulling on a paddle is like telepathy – it responds so fast to any command, it’s scarcely believable.

You don’t get much better driving than that. Which means that driving enjoyment can be sourced from all parts of the car. Yes, a manual car is very fun, but with the right set up a paddle-shift car can be just as fun – if not more so.

Here’s the thing: humans were never designed with driving in mind. Our body, though hugely capable, isn’t meant to be experiencing G-forces around corners or being ferried along at triple-digit speeds. So, with how fast the Ferrari is, your brain can only keep up with a certain amount of information flowing to it. It’s the reason why when you hop out of a car after a lengthy spirited drive, you feel worn out. That’s not from physical strain, but from an extensive mental workout.

So if cars are getting faster and more intense, surely the move to paddle shifts can only be a good thing. Take a leg movement out, keep your hands on the wheel – isn’t that safer? After all, heading into a corner, trying to execute a perfectly matched heel-and-toe downshift while braking, then taking your hand off the wheel to change gear – it’s not exactly the safest way of driving, is it? Especially when you stuff up the downshift. Because that will happen.

Please, don’t get me wrong, I like driving an old-school muscle car, blipping the throttle, feeling the gate of the gearbox and stepping off the clutch as much as the next millionaire who owns an AC Cobra. I just think that with progress comes improvement. A good dual-clutch gearbox (think Ferrari or Porsche) can be just as good as a manual.

Except because it’s quicker, you can go quicker. And I think, in a proper sports car, that’s the point.
