One sunny Mumbai day, two Ferraris, and two surprising revelations!&nbsp;

It’s no secret that for Enzo Ferrari making street-legal production cars was simply a means to an end (funding his racing programme), and yet he ended up creating production cars that exemplified the pinnacle of motoring in one way or another – a tradition that continues even today, a time when the lines between sportscars and supercars are getting blurred by the day.&nbsp;

But what is it that really makes a Ferrari extraordinary? Is it the Italian design? The attention to detail? Or is it, perhaps, the sheer power and acceleration? Or a perfect amalgamation of them all? A quick drive of the GTC4Lusso T and the Portofino gives us the answer. &nbsp;

Four-topper 
I recently stumbled upon a chance to take the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T for a short spin in Mumbai, and it was love at first drive. You see, like all cars with the Prancing Horse insignia, it, too, has a jaw-dropping design. However, it’s a Ferrari like no other! And the reason is all in the name – it’s a GT Coupe with 4-seats and special attention to luxury (lusso in Italian).&nbsp;

Fans of the brand may say that the GTC4Lusso T is not as breath-taking as other Ferraris, but, personally, I think that it’s very alluring. It perfectly encapsulates Ferrari’s design ethos despite being a shooting brake.&nbsp;

With a long, never-ending bonnet and wide rear haunches, the GTC4Lusso T’s design is a perfect mix of elegance and performance. Ferrari has simply nailed the stance, not to mention the space and practicality it creates.&nbsp;

And while you wouldn’t necessarily expect it from Ferrari, but the GTC4Lusso does have reasonable space for four passengers. Even mundane tasks like ingress and egress aren’t all that painful either, despite only 2 doors. And if that wasn’t enough, the GTC4Lusso even has a 450-litre boot.&nbsp;

Different materials and layers come together perfectly to give the cabin an incredible sense of style and panache. And when you hold that flat-bottom steering wheel, with the optional carbon fibre trim and shift lights, you know that you’re in for an incredible experience. So, let’s hit the start button, shall we?&nbsp;

At the heart of this brilliant machine lies Ferrari’s ‘International Engine of the Year’ winning 3.9-litre bi-turbo V8, which is almost as fast as its V12 counterpart. It goes from 0 to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds – just one-tenth of a second slower than the V12. Turbo-lag is pretty much non-existent, and power is always available whenever you demand it.&nbsp;

Going hard on the loud pedal burdens the electronics with the task of keeping this rear-wheel-drive monster in line. And while it does what it does best – no surprises there! – it does so in a manner that’s quite comfortable, and it’s this comfort quotient that took me by surprise.&nbsp;

When you think of a Ferrari, you don’t think of comfort but of a hair-raising, spine-tingling experience – something that’s as natural to a Ferrari as its exquisite design. But here’s a Ferrari that makes you feel as if you’re on a flying carpet. In fact, I would go so far as to claim that it’s easily the most practical Ferrari that you can get your hands on today – full credit to the MagneRide (magnetic) adaptive dampers.&nbsp;

During my short drive, I didn’t encounter too many corners, but the few that came my way were tackled with supreme confidence by the GTC4Lusso. The rear-wheel steering and the 46:54 rear bias ensure the GTC4Lusso T’s ninja-like agility.&nbsp;

The biggest takeaway from my short spin was just how usable the GTC4Lusso T really is as an everyday supercar. It seats four people in comfort, can munch miles for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and, at the same time, offers the driving thrills that you expect from a Ferrari. And that, for me, is a huge win!&nbsp;

Top-down treat 
Many argue that California was a deviation from the idea of a true Ferrari. While I can’t really comment on that, since I haven’t driven California, what I can tell you is that despite these apprehensions, it was an absolute hit on the sales charts. In the 10 years that California was on sale, Ferrari sold more than 11,000 samples.&nbsp;

So, naturally, its replacement had to be faster, more stylish, and, above all, an authentic Ferrari. And that’s exactly what the Portofino aims to be.&nbsp;

It has an all-new chassis that’s made of 12 different alloys and is now 80kgs lighter than the model it replaces. With 592bhp from the same 3.9-litre V8 as the GTC4Lusso T, the Portofino, too, is bloody fast – 0 to 200km/h in 10.8 seconds fast!&nbsp;

And while these numbers are pretty much identical to those of the GTC4Lusso T, the Portofino feels a lot more dramatic in the way it drives. The response to inputs is almost telepathic, which, together with an insanely wide torque band, makes the Portofino always ready and willing.&nbsp;

The ferocious speed of the car is perfectly complemented by a loud bassy note, which, to a petrolhead, is what Für Elise is to a classical music lover. And the fact that you can hear it in its full glory with the top down only makes driving it that much more sensational.

Inside, the dashboard is identical to that of the GTC4Lusso T. But, since the Portofino is a cabriolet, it doesn’t quite offer the same levels of practicality and comfort. Obviously, the cabin isn’t as spacious as the GTC’s. The Portofino also feels a tad bit firmer in the way it drives. In fact, after driving the two cars back-to-back, I found the Portofino to be a lot more involving than its GT sibling. That being said, it doesn’t quite tackle bad roads with the ease of the GT.&nbsp;

However, it does allow you to live the top-down experience in the best way possible. The Portofino may be an ‘entry-level’ Ferrari, but it is, without the hint of a doubt, one of the most enthralling boulevard-cruisers out there.&nbsp;

Split Personality 
From the engine to the interior, both these Ferrari’s have quite a few things in common, and yet they are as far apart as pasta is from risotto in the way they feel from behind the wheel. But, despite the difference in their flavours, they both are equally delectable.&nbsp;

Sure, a lot of brands produce sports cars that are equally fast and exhilarating to drive, but they are more like multicuisine restaurants with a menu full of options. Ferrari, on the other hand, is like a Michelin star speciality restaurant – and that’s why everything it does has an unparalleled sense of satisfaction.&nbsp;

The Ferrari GTC4 Lusso and the Ferrari Portofino share a lot under the skin but are virtually poles apart from one another. Here's how the two Ferraris fared for us on one sunny day in Mumbai

Ever wondered how the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T and Ferrari Portofino, one of the fastest machines from Italy, look from inside and out? Here are a bunch of photos that will serve the purpose.

‘Tranquil’ is not really the word that comes to mind when all you’ve done for the day is drive a rather exciting Ferrari on some amazing stretches of tarmac. But, after an intense, but rather enjoyable, day of carving up some freshly laid mountain roads at Jebel Jais in the UAE – made even better by local police, who gave us free reign to speed up and down the mountain to our heart’s content – the return to a normal life feels rather tranquil. Perspective, I think, it’s called. So there I was, in the middle of the Al-Wadi desert, sitting in my private pool nursing a drink under the bright moonlight, waiting for my heartbeat to normalize from the adrenaline rushes I’d been experiencing all day courtesy of a particular V8 turbocharged Ferrari.

Steroid injection

Our flashback of this driving trip begins about 24 hours earlier, when I arrive in Dubai, waiting to – rather eagerly I might add – get my hands on the new Ferrari GTC4 Lusso T. Now, to the uninformed, the Lusso T is the more affordable version of Ferrari’s ‘versatile’ touring machine, albeit with a few catches. For one, it’s not powered by the traditional V12 engine common to Ferrari’s grand tourers, but by a version of the V8 engine powering the 488 GTB and the California T. However, that doesn’t mean that the Lusso T is short of horsepower by any stretch of imagination, as the 3.9-litre engine puts out a rather healthy 601bhp and a stupendous 760Nm of torque. And, unlike its V12 sibling, the Lusso T is rear-wheel drive only, which means that not only is it lighter, but also that it has a rearward bias in its weight distribution – with a 46:54 layout.&nbsp;

Beauty is in the eyes of the…

A thorny aspect of the car though, for a lot of people and especially the tifosi, would be its looks. Since the GTC4 is at the more practical and grand touring end of Ferrari’s range, the silhouette is somewhat akin to what designers and enthusiasts like to refer to as a ‘breadbox.’ Or, as Ferrari like to call it, a shooting brake design. Regardless of how you refer to it, I personally think the GTC4’s styling works in many ways. Not only does the design render it increased practicality in the form of providing 2+2 seating – the rear seats are only suitable for young kids though – but also a rather usable boot. Plus, its distinctive design makes the car stand out – not only from the more ordinary traffic on the road but also from other sports and supercars as well. And sure, while the GTC4 might not be a classic Ferrari design, but it’s a striking design that you simply can’t ignore.&nbsp;

If there was one thing that stood out for me in the GTC4, it has to be the amount that Ferrari has improved its quality levels over the last decade or so. Whether it’s the shut lines on the body, interior surfaces or panel gaps, the Ferrari looks exquisite inside-and-out with virtually every surface and panel oozing quality and workmanship. Of course, the appeal of the interior is increased by the vast panoramic roof that pretty much encompasses the entire roof – I was so impressed, in fact, that it led me to break my cardinal rule of picture-taking etiquette by actually taking a selfie. But, I guess, exceptions can be made when you’re seated in a beautiful Ferrari.&nbsp;

Speaking of being seated in the Lusso, like all modern Ferraris, you sit facing a steering wheel that holds a number of controls on the wheel – such as the indicators, wiper switches, and more. This takes some getting used to, but it quickly becomes second nature once you spend some time driving the car.&nbsp;

And then there’s the steering. The GTC4 Lusso has what characterises Ferraris of the current era – a rather sharp steering rack, helped by a rear-wheel steering (4WS) system, which certainly takes some getting used to as the car reacts immediately and sharply to even the slightest steering inputs. As far as comfort goes, I do have to mention that, even on some of the broken roads that we encountered in the UAE – yes, such a thing exists – the GTC4 Lusso delivered quite a comfortable ride with its Magnaride SCM-E damper control system, cleverly masking uncomfortable thumps without transmitting them into the cabin.&nbsp;

Razor’s edge

Sharp responses are something that are pretty much the hallmark of the GTC4 Lusso – from the design to the steering, from the super-quick shifting gearbox with its massive gearshift paddles mounted behind the steering to, the sharpest of them all, the throttle pedal! Simply put, the 3.9-litre engine in the GTC4 Lusso gives you no clue of it being turbocharged. When asked, the engine response is instant – turbo lag is clearly something the engineers at Ferrari have never heard of – and the roar from the engine and exhaust is classical Ferrari, courtesy of the engine’s flat-plane crankshaft. The V8 engine uses Variable Boost Management, which provides higher boost further up the rev range – thank to which Ferrari can choose longer gear ratios, which contributes to better fuel efficiency.&nbsp;

As I squeezed the throttle of the GTC4 Lusso T with my foot flat to the floor, the car gently slithered its rear-end from side-to-side, and all the while the E-Diff (the electronic differential) tried to find the maximum traction for the gobs of power spewing out from under the bonnet. Fuel efficiency was the last of my concerns. After all, if you can afford the GTC4 Lusso, you probably aren’t too concerned with things that are so mundane as efficiency. What you will find with this Ferrari, however, is just how usable and comfortable it really is. This is a car with which to cross continents – at a rapid pace of course. That, in a nutshell, describes the GTC4 Lusso T for me. Capable of touring hundreds, even thousands of kilometres with four occupants in great comfort, all the while delivering what is quintessentially the traditional Ferrari experience. Unfortunately for me, though, it was time to get back to normal life and return to my diesel-hatchback for the daily commute. That’s the other side of perspective, I suppose. &nbsp;

Ferrari has revealed a turbocharged version, the GTC4Lusso T which will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in early October.

At the upcoming Paris Motor Show, Ferrari will unveil a turbocharged version, the GTC4Lusso T, the first four-seater V8 turbo sportscar Ferrari has ever made.

Naturally, the GTC4Lusso T is down on power from the V12 powered car, but not by a heap. The naturally aspirated V12 in the standard car produces 681bhp. Ferrari lifted the turbocharged 3.9-litre V8 from the California T and tuned it to produce 602bhp but it produces 760Nm of torque which is available anywhere between 3,000rpm to 5250rpm, which is 63Nm more than the N/A V12 and plonked it in the front of the GTC4Lusso. Ferrari are claiming that the GTC4Lusso T can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, two tenth slower than the naturally aspirated V12 car and reach up to a top speed of 320 km/h while the V12 can do 345 km/h.

The GTC4Lusso T does away with the one-of-a-kind all wheel drive system found in the V12 and the now discontinued FF predecessor, and is available only with rear-wheel-drive only also with four-wheel steering with Side Slip Control. Throwing the four-wheel drive system and four cylinders away naturally makes the car lighter and now weighs only 1,740 kilograms (dry). Ferrari have also distributed the weight to a more suitable 46:54 ratio, from front to back for better handling.

The GTC4Lusso T hosts the same exterior styling as the V12 Lusso with a fastback sloping roof line. Inside the cabin are four seats, and a Dual Cockpit at the front designed to enhance the shared driving experience for both driver and passenger. It also has the new 10.25-inch HD capacitive touchscreen infotainment system as well.

Naturally the forced induction version is likely to be priced lower than the more powerful and faster V12 but by how much is the question. Though Ferrari are yet to launch the GTC4Lusso in India, we expect both cars to be launched soon. The Turbo may arrive before the naturally aspirated version as well to Indian shores as the lower price tag will be a bigger draw for Indian customers.
