The job of an automatic car is to make your everyday commute easier and bearable. So, how well does the BS6 Ford Figo AT do its job?

Let me put forth the following scenario. It’s Monday morning, the phone alarm rings and if you’ve spent the previous day well, there’s a good chance that it won’t be the last time it rings! After a tussle, however, you’re are awake&nbsp;but realise that you’ve missed your usual traffic-free commute window. Now that facing rush-hour traffic is inevitable, some might take a deep breath and thank themselves for buying an automatic car. Others, well, you know what they’d do. The point though that I’m trying to make is that the importance, and consequently the sales, of automatic cars, are ever-growing with each passing day. However, a look at the current options puts forth a pretty lean list, thanks to the BS6 emission norms that basically robbed us of some good options.

One such case was the Ford Figo Automatic. It was discontinued just a few months before the BS6 era began but thankfully, Ford has brought it back in its petrol guise. The 2021 Figo AT was launched in July this year in two variants – Titanium &amp; Titanium+ – with prices starting from ₹7.75 lakh (ex-showroom). So, given the Figo’s cult following in India and the added bonus of an AT version, it was my duty to borrow the car for a day to find out what all <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/ford/" target="_blank">Ford</a> has done to make the 2021 Figo AT relevant and lucrative for the buyers and, more importantly, is it worth the buck that Ford’s asking for it.

The Powerhouse

A small history lesson here. The previous Figo AT was on sale with a very nice 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol unit from Ford’s Dragon series. For 2021 though, the car continues with the smaller 1.2-litre three-cylinder BS6 unit of its MT brethren. So, while the old motor was good for about 120bhp, the downsized unit dials everything down – it develops just 95bhp and 119Nm of torque. The six-speed torque converter gearbox though, which is perhaps Figo’s key advantage as I’ll be explaining shortly, is the same unit as before. So, how does the new engine-gearbox combo work?

Simply put – it’s all very linear. As soon as you start driving the car, you realise the 1.2-litre unit is all about progressive and linear power delivery. There’s no sense of urgency when it comes to delivering those 95 horses and, therefore, the best way to enjoy the Figo AT is with a light foot and, of course, a fair bit of patience. Having said that, the car will reach triple-digit speeds but it will probably take longer than one might expect.

The gearbox, on the other hand, is quite appreciable both in terms of its response and smoothness. As I said before, it’s also perhaps the Figo’s ace of Spades as its key rivals, like the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/hyundai/grand-i10-nios/" target="_blank">Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS</a> and the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/maruti-suzuki/" target="_blank">Maruti Suzuki</a> Swift, both offer AMTs and anyone who’s experienced both these kinds of gearboxes will know that AMTs are relatively crude when compared to a torque converter unit.

The gearshifts are smooth &amp; quick but only till the time you don’t mash the accelerator pedal. If you do, the shifts become noticeably jerkier and that’s when the gearbox starts showing its weakness. However, Ford has addressed this shortcoming by adding two important features to the gearbox – a Sports Mode and a SelectShift feature that lets the driver flip through gears manually using a toggle switch on the gearshift lever.

And I’m happy to report that the Sports Mode isn’t a gimmick and it genuinely transforms the driving experience with buttery smooth up &amp; down gearshifts. Plus, if you use the accelerator a bit boldly in Sports Mode, the driver is rewarded as the car can hold the gears up to 6,500rpm! The experience remains the same for the SelectShift feature, although the toggle switch does not feel very organic – it feels a bit fiddly, much like operating a video game joystick. But it does not take too long to get used to.

Ride Quality

All is well on a nice, smooth stretch of tarmac. But what if you encounter the more familiar pot-hole or speed bump-ridden stretches of road? Well, if you have the Figo, you can rest assured that bad roads won’t be an issue. The Figo’s suspension set-up works very well at slow to moderate speeds and it absorbs most bumps or potholes with ease. It’s only at high speeds though that the setup feels a bit inadequate, with that confidence-inducing sturdiness missing. That could also be due to the fact that the Figo AT isn’t a particularly heavy car.

The seats of the Figo are perhaps the second ace it has up its sleeve – that’s because they play a very big role in ensuring the car’s stellar ride quality. The front seats could have been better contoured – they’re not very body-hugging but in terms of cushioning, they’re spot on; this goes for both the front seats as well as the rear bench.

Therefore, the overall ride quality of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/ford/figo/" target="_blank">Figo</a> AT is impressive and was beyond my expectations, to the extent that it even overshadowed the torque converter and its Sports Mode.

Trouble in Paradise?

So far, the Figo AT has more or less ticked all the right boxes. But a slightly more critical analysis did unearth a few chinks in its armour. For example, some of the plastics used in the cabin could do with better quality, although I must mention that the build quality is still pretty good and the car feels like it’s put together well. Other than that, the trip information display could use a bigger display for better clarity and the infotainment touchscreen is not set in a driver-biased direction. Therefore, operating it while driving becomes a bit too distracting due to its dead-straight positioning. The rear-view camera’s resolution and clarity also need to be stepped up a notch.

Verdict

In the end, it all comes down to how you want to use the car. If you’re the kind of driver who likes a punchy motor, then I’m afraid the Figo AT is not the right choice for you. However, if you’re on the lookout for a petrol automatic hatchback that’s very comfortable to drive and offers a good engine-gearbox combination, then I think the Figo AT should definitely be in your consideration.

On the price front, here’s the dope. The top-spec Figo AT Titanium+ will set you back ₹8.20 lakh. For this comparison, let’s consider top variants of the aforementioned key rivals – the Grand i10 NIOS Asta AMT is priced at ₹7.86 lakh while the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/maruti-suzuki/swift/" target="_blank">Suzuki Swift</a> ZXI+ AMT will cost you ₹8.42 lakh (all figures are ex-showroom). So, the Figo’s pricing seems fairly competitive.

However, in my opinion, Ford could have made the pricing a bit more competitive (read: more affordable) for two major reasons: A) There are some important features, like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, missing even on the top-spec Figo and B) Apart from the new 15-inch alloys, there’s nothing new &amp; exciting on offer as far as the exterior is concerned. Thus, the car looks a bit dated and bland.

Irrespective of this though, you can’t really go wrong with the Figo…

The Ford Figo petrol automatic has made a comeback. This time it gets a smaller power plant and a true blue torque convertor automatic gearbox on offer. Let’s find out where does it stand in the segment.

Ford has re-entered its Figo in the small automatic hatchback race. This space is dominated by Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios,&nbsp;so we put the three B-segment hatchbacks one against another on paper to compare their offerings.

Before we begin the comparo, we would like to bring to your notice that the Nios is the only hatchback that gets a diesel-automatic variant, that the Swift and the Figo miss out on. However, to keep the comparison even we shall consider the petrol-automatic models of all the three said hatchbacks.

Drivetrain

A 1.2-litre petrol motor is common between the three. The Nios and the Swift get a four-cylinder layout, and the Figo has a more compact three-cylinder layout. Between the three, Ford Figo uses a torque convertor automatic whereas the other two come equipped with an AMT. The Ford Figo is the most powerful hatchback in comparison and the Swift is just shy of 6bhp to match the Figo’s power output.

Variants &amp; Features

The Swift AMT and the Nios AMT get four variants to chose from while the Figo Automatic is offered in two variants. The Ford Figo misses out on projector headlamps that the rivals benefit from. The Nios AMT misses out on the hill-hold function and an electronic stability program that the Figo automatic and the Swift AMT come equipped with. Additionally, the Figo gets traction control and four airbags (total six airbags) over the two.

A touch-operated infotainment system is common between the three and the hatchbacks come equipped car connected software from their respective manufacturers.

Pricing

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios AMT is the most affordable on the list with a starting price of Rs 6.62 lakh (ex-showroom). The Maruti Suzuki Swift demands Rs 7.01 lakh (ex-showroom) for its lowest-spec automatic variant. The Ford Figo automatic carries the highest entry-level price tag of Rs 7.75 lakh (ex-showroom).

With respect to their top-spec variants, the Nios is the most affordable hatchback at Rs 7.86 lakh (ex-showroom). The Figo Titanium + petrol-auto is priced at Rs 8.20 lakh (ex-showroom). The Swift is the most expensive offering that costs Rs 8.56 lakh (ex-showroom) for its ZXi+ AMT with a dual-tone paint scheme.

The Ford Figo Petrol AT makes a comeback with&nbsp;two trim options,&nbsp;a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, and a sizeable gap between its pricing and that of its manual counterparts.

Ford has relaunched the petrol automatic variants of the Figo in India, with prices starting from&nbsp;₹7.75 lakh for the Titanium trim and going up to&nbsp;₹8.20 lakh for the Titanium+ trim (all prices are introductory ex-showroom). This means that the latter is now the range-topping petrol variant in the Figo line-up. In comparison, the&nbsp;Figo Petrol Titanium MT is priced at ₹6.82 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), which is about&nbsp;₹93,000 less&nbsp;than its&nbsp;new automatic counterpart. However, the automatic variants have given the Figo Blu and the diesel powertrain a miss.

Before the Figo AT was discontinued in January 2020, the petrol engine available was a bigger 1.5-litre three-cylinder Dragon unit. Now, to ensure BS6 compliance, the Figo AT continues with a smaller 1.2-litre three-cylinder&nbsp;TiVCT unit, which also powers the manual variants. With a six-speed torque converter automatic, the petrol motor develops an unchanged 95bhp and 119Nm of torque. But, unlike the EcoSport, which offers paddle shifters, the Figo AT offers&nbsp;a SelectShift® feature, which lets&nbsp;the driver change gears manually using a toggle switch on the gearshift lever. There's also a new Sports Mode on offer, which&nbsp;enhances the overall gear changing experience.&nbsp;

Since the Figo AT is available on the Titanium and Titanium+ trims, there's no shortage of premium features. FordPass Connectivity, rain-sensing wipers (Titanium+), an&nbsp;electrochromic IRVM (Titanium+), a seven-inch&nbsp;touchscreen infotainment system, and safety features – like six airbags (dual front only on Titanium), a Traction Control System (TCS), Hill Launch Assist (HLA), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC)&nbsp;– are all part of the offering.

The Figo AT is available in five colour options – Diamond White, Ruby Red, Moondust Silver, Smoke Grey, and White Gold – and eagle-eyed readers would have also noticed a new set of 15-inch alloy wheels to distinguish the AT variants from their MT counterparts.

As for the feature differences between the two trims, the Titanium+ AT additionally offers front fog lamps, a rear de-fogger, a rear washer, a wiper, a rear parcel tray, auto climate control, power-folding ORVMs, auto headlamps, and&nbsp;side &amp;&nbsp;curtain airbags.

Ford Figo Petrol Automatic launched at Rs 7.75 lakh

Ford has relaunched the automatic variants of the Figo in India, with prices starting from ₹7.75 lakh for the Titanium trim and going up to ₹8.20 lakh for the Titanium+ trim (all figures are introductory ex-showroom). This means the latter is now the range-topping petrol variant in the Figo line-up.

Ford India will re-introduce the Figo petrol automatic on July 22. The hatchback is likely to be offered in one variant. The Ford Aspire may benefit from a similar drivetrain and will possibly be launched at a later date.

Ford India will launch the petrol automatic variant of the Figo hatchback on July 22, 2021. The Figo is the most affordable offering in the company’s portfolio and carries a starting price of Rs 5.82 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base petrol variant.

The hatchback is currently available with a five-speed manual transmission with both its petrol, as well as, diesel powertrain. The petrol models come equipped with a 1.2-litre engine, pushing out 94.6bhp and 119Nm of torque. The diesel motor is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit, churning out 98.6bhp and 215Nm of torque.

The Ford Figo automatic is likely to borrow its powertrain from the Ecosport petrol automatic. Ford may offer the 1.5-litre three-cylinder 'Dragon' engine with a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox in the Figo automatic. In the Ecosport, this engine produces 120bhp and 149Nm of torque. If Ford offers the Figo petrol automatic in the same state of tune, then the power figures will be comparable to that of the Hyundai i20 1.0-litre turbo-petrol.

Ford may offer the Figo automatic in one variant – Titanium – and the pricing is expected to be between Rs 7 and 7.25 lakh (ex-showroom). The Ford Figo petrol automatic will directly rival the Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios petrol AMT, with a starting price of Rs 6.86 lakh and 6.62 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively.

The Ford Aspire is likely to get a similar treatment. The petrol automatic variant of the Aspire could be launched by the festive season. The Ford Freestyle, on the other hand, could miss out on an automatic option completely. The Freestyle is positioned above the Figo as a premium offering, and the addition of a larger engine with an auto-box could lead to an unreasonable price rise. Currently, the Ford Freestyle is priced between Rs 7.27 and 9.02 lakh (ex-showroom).

The powertrain combination for the Figo automatic is a new setup for Ford as the company's 1.2-litre petrol engine will be mated to the new six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox that made its debut in the EcoSport. 

Considering the growing demand for automatic transmission equipped cars in the mass market segment, Ford India has been working on an automatic variant for its Figo hatchback. Within the same segment, all of the Figo’s rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and the Honda Jazz (which is set to make a comeback soon), are available with the option of an automatic gearbox. So in order to plug this gap, Ford has been developing a new powertrain combination for its small cars. We have received confirmation that the engine in question is the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that is standard issue in the Figo, while the gearbox in question is the new 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox that made its debut in the 1.5-litre petrol automatic Ford EcoSport.

With this new powertrain option, Ford will be able to infuse fresh demand into its existing range of small cars. So while the Figo will become the first car to benefit from the new 1.2-litre petrol automatic powertrain setup, expect its siblings - the Freestyle and Aspire to benefit from the new engine and gearbox combination as well.

The market launch of the Ford Figo petrol automatic was initially slated for the second quarter of the ongoing financial year, but due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, the launch of the car has been pushed back and as of now there isn’t an official confirmation about the time of&nbsp;launch for&nbsp;the car.&nbsp; But rest assured, the Figo automatic petrol is very much on its way for its India launch.

After half a year of enjoying what’s one of the most fun-to-drive mass-market cars today, the time has come to bid adieu to my Long-Term Ford Figo. I’ve loved this car for its capabilities, in terms of handling and high-speed performance. I truly believe that everyone should, at least once, drive a car with positive handling traits to truly understand the joys of driving. And I have to say that this is one of the very few proper drivers’ cars in the sub-10 lakh price bracket.&nbsp;

What’s more, in this top-end spec, it even looks great with its all-black grille, roof, ORVM casings, and wheels. The black plastic inserts in the bumpers and the black stickers around the lower section of the car also add some flair to its overall appearance. Over the past few months, a lot of my friends have admired the Figo’s look, which I think goes very well with its performance-oriented nature. It goes without saying that I am going to miss this car quite a bit. Goodbye good lookin' &nbsp;

Its Ford’s inherently well-designed chassis, suspension, and steering setups that make its cars great to drive. And I have to say that this is one of the very few proper drivers’ cars in the sub-10 lakh price bracket. 

It’s been over two months since we’ve been under lockdown. So now I’m definitely missing the open roads, even though I’ve been to office for the past week. It’s definitely a different experience now on our city roads with minimum traffic, making our urban drives as pleasant as they should be.&nbsp;

After a few days of cruising on sparsely used roads, I can’t help but reminisce about the time I went on a road trip in the Figo. Oh, what I wouldn’t give to go on a trip to the hills right now! I really enjoyed the Figo’s willing 100bhp engine on highways, but I couldn’t mention in that long-term report, owing to the word limitation, about the Figo’s braking performance. The whole braking system has been set up to perfection.&nbsp;

Not only do the brakes have enough bite but also to offer great feel, giving you phenomenal confidence at high speeds. Once, while I was overtaking a truck, it pulled into my lane without warning. But I wasn’t unsettled at all! As I slammed the brakes, the car slowed down immediately without any drama. The ABS system is just so well calibrated that it offers impeccable assistance without creating any kind&nbsp;of unsettling disturbance in braking performance or through the pedal. It’s simply superb! &nbsp;

Today’s hot selling cars are all about bling and pizzazz. But realign your priorities and its cars like the Ford Figo that come into focus. Over the past couple of months that I’ve been living with the Figo, this has become more and more evident. Move past the lack of projector head lamps, dual-tone alloys and a fancy infotainment system and what you notice are the little things that make your life so much more convenient. The automatic wiper system, for example, may seem a bit dim-witted initially, but once it gets a hang of the conditions, it really comes into its own. For instance, if you end up driving behind a truck and its tyres are spraying road water onto your windshield..., the system understands this and works appropriately. Step it up a notch, and every time you drive fast over a puddle the intelligent wipers respond seamlessly to the resulting spray on the windshield. Even the auto-dimming IRVM works like an absolute charm. It’s the little things that truly make your life better in a car and the Figo has a fair amount of them to boast about. &nbsp;
