A look at the Lamborghini Huracán is enough to tell you that it already has enough of everything, most of all power and performance. But, then, that’s where enthusiasts disagree with most people, for they clearly believe that there’s no such thing as too much power. So, in comes the Huracán STO. But don’t for a second think that it’s just about more power and performance, for there is more to it – its design, subtle touches, and attention to detail, all come together to make it a thing of beauty and awe.

Pumped!

I first saw the STO in Doha, and needless to say that I was impressed. With its extended air dam, huge wing, massive wheels, roof scoop, and, most of all, the strakes on the rear windscreen, it looks absolutely pumped, like a fitness enthusiast who has spent years building and sculpting his body in the gym. Inside, too, the same theme continues – you get lots of Alcantara and lots of carbon fibre. Of course, the STO only has two seats, as the rear has a massive roll cage. In fact, if you try and use the inside rear-view mirror, you’d find the view to be quite comical – something that sports cars in the 80s featured prominently. And your visibility through the rear windscreen is virtually zero.

Now, a lot has gone into reducing the STO’s weight – for instance, you get a cloth strap instead of a traditional door handle! Oh, and if you’re not at the peak of your fitness level (or you’re a bit portly), you might find getting in and out of the STO a bit of a task – given its height, which is just 48 inches, you will have to really work out a technique to accomplish the job.

Loud and Proud

All the visual touches of the STO give you the sense of its extremeness, but to really understand and experience that extremeness, you need to pump that start switch and watch as the 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 comes to life. Equipped with an Akrapovic titanium exhaust system, the STO is unabashedly loud, like all good sports cars should be.

Slot it into first gear, and the STO moves forward effortlessly. Gearshifts have massively improved in comparison to the brand’s earlier efforts. The combination of 630bhp and just 1,339kgs of weight means that the STO’s acceleration is absolutely explosive – the way it picks pace matches nicely with the beautiful exhaust note of the engine. Given that the STO is specially tuned for sharp responses, the steering is ultra-aggressive and very direct.

Now, it takes very little time to get used to the STO’s performance. Every time you use the loud pedal generously, you get used to being pushed right back into your seat. With a top speed of 310km/h, it takes no time to get to speeds that would see you being immediately arrested in most countries. Now, it might be a bit too stiff in terms of ride quality, but if you have access to good roads or a racetrack, the STO offers one hell of an experience. It’s an extreme expression of the Huracán, and it tells you how much a car can be developed to suit certain conditions.

Driving the Lamborghini Huracan STO in Doha

'With a top speed of 310km/h, it takes no time to get to speeds that would get you arrested in most countries!' Ishan gets an opportunity to experience the STO – an extreme version of the already powerful Lamborghini Huracán – on the roads of Doha.

With its 5.2-litre V10 heart, the Huracan sniggers at turbos and swats away hybrids. And the STO… well, the STO simply leaves them in the dust.

It pains me to say this. Actually, at the risk of being melodramatic, it breaks my heart to say this… the STO is the Huracan swansong! And it could well be a swansong for its raging 5.2-litre V10 heart as well.

Why is this heart-breaking – after all, the Huracan has had a great run over seven good years? Let me put it this way: you wouldn’t ask the question if you’ve ever had the chance to experience the Huracan’s magical drivetrain in all its aural and propulsive glory. Sure, turbocharged engines produce more usable power lower in the rev range, and hybrids too can be used to aid in propulsion when it comes to super sports cars like these. But, frankly, there’s simply nothing like a quick spinning, high revving monster of a motor as the Lamborghini V10. The way it builds power, the linearity of its power delivery, and the ferocity of the speed it delivers all the way to 8,000rpm – all of it beggars belief. And the sound… OH MY GOD, the sound.&nbsp;

This 5.2L V10 Could Wake the Dead&nbsp;

If the sound of this V10 doesn’t make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end, it means that you don’t have a pulse. Actually, I take that back because this sound could stir the dead. It’s such an integral part of the appeal of this motor that the aural experience is almost as important as the inertia it generates. But let’s not diminish the importance of the inertia itself. 100km/h comes up in 3 seconds. 200 in 9 seconds. But that’s merely the result of physics when you have 630 horses and 565Nm propelling 1,339kgs of exotic materials. The front clamshell bonnet is made of carbon fibre and is called a ‘cofango.’ In fact, 75% of the body is carbon fibre. The brakes are carbon-ceramic. The wheels are magnesium. The windshield is lightened and the interior is pretty stark – so-much-so that it feels like you’re sitting on a plank moulded to fit your frame.&nbsp;

All of this means, however, that the STO is 43 kilos lighter than the Huracan Performante. And, with its gills, ducts and grilles, it makes even the <a href="https://www.autox.com/track-test/lamborghini-huracan-evo-track-test-106843/">Huracan Evo</a> sitting next to it look, pedestrian – if that’s at all possible. And if the spec sheet isn’t enough to convince you, visually this car screams ‘race car for the road.’ It’s just got so much going on visually that you’re like a kid in a candy store the first time you lay eyes on it – what with its exhaust peeking out of the rear valence, the NACA ducts in the rear fenders, the snorkel that sits on the roof and the massive rear wing that can be adjusted to three positions, which, provide between 324 and 420 kilos of downforce depending on which setting you choose.

A Race Car for the Road

But, enough talk, how does all this trickery translate to the road. Well, the track to be more precise since this machine was clearly designed with only one thing in mind – lap times! After all, you can even monitor individual brake temperatures on the digital instrument cluster – now that’s pretty serious stuff. Not that you need to watch brake temps in this car – the car we tested spent two full days doing constant laps around the BIC, and not once did the brakes fade or need to be cooled down. In fact, it didn’t miss a beat over two days of attempts by drivers of different skill levels to tame this beast.

So, how did I fare you ask? Well, I headed out of the pits at the BIC following <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/lamborghini/" target="_blank">Lamborghini</a> racer – and ridiculously gifted driver – Armaan Ebrahim in a Huracan Evo. Now, when I first drove the Evo a couple of years ago at the Sriperumbudur racetrack outside Chennai, I was amazed at how the Huracan had evolved over its lifecycle. It started life by living up to the raging bull on its bonnet. At least in my experience, it was quite a handful on track – as Lamborghinis were known to be. But, by the time it had evolved into the Huracan Evo, it had become an absolute precision machine. The steering, suspension and chassis listened to your inputs to the very last millimetre. And with LDVI (Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata), the electronic brain that anticipates your every move, the Huracan Evo was almost telepathic. Let’s just say that it was an absolute gem on the racetrack.

Not as Intimidating as it Looks

As we exited the pit lane, Armaan didn’t waste any time – he simply put his foot down, as he’s wont to do. I responded by flexing my right foot as well, and what followed was a howl from behind me that sent shivers down my spine. Then the scenery began to blur in a manner that took me a little by surprise. It took the better part of the back straight to get to grips with the sheer speed and spectacle of the STO. I realised very quickly why the seat was so tight-fitting – I thanked God for it in fact.

By the time we got to the braking zone for turn 4 at the end of the long back straight, I hit the brakes and almost came to a grinding halt about 50 metres before the apex – that’s how good the brakes are. After about half a lap of coming to terms with the (quite vast) performance envelope of the STO, I settled down and started to really enjoy pushing Armaan in the Huracan Evo in front of me. After all, I did have the faster car. This quickly became apparent – especially in the braking zones I was all over him. Very quickly, I could smell his brakes overheating and see his four-wheel-drive system kicking in as he was trying to power out of corners. All the while, I was using the throttle to point the rear-wheel driven STO in the intended direction at corner exits.

For a machine that’s mildly intimidating to look at, the STO was incredibly playful and friendly from behind the wheel. So-much-so that I quickly built up the courage to put it in Trofeo – Race Mode – which unlocked another wave of performance. But this drivetrain and chassis are so well matched that I could quickly extract every ounce of performance without being white-knuckled and fearful for my life – not to mention concerned about wrapping 5 crores worth of Lamborghini around the trackside Armco. And that’s the true beauty of this machine, it’s so well balanced – the engine, transmission, grip, handling, steering and electronics are so well integrated – that it’s an absolute joy to pilot. It really is a cockpit, and it has so much drama that you almost do feel like a fighter pilot.

End of an Era&nbsp;

But what pushed the STO from ‘like’ to ‘love’ for me was that gem of an engine that builds power in such a ferocious, but linear, manner all the way to 8,000rpm. While I loved every minute of the very short time that I spent with the STO – it’s something that’ll stay with me forever – what I’m left with is a devastating sadness. Not because I can’t afford the STO, even if I were to sell most of my internal organs, but because it marks the end of an era – the last hurrah of the naturally aspirated super sports car. Thus far, Lamborghini has remained committed to the naturally-aspirated V10 and V12, but even they’ve announced that their new models will be hybridized by 2024. And while I’m sure they’ll be even faster, I just wonder if they’ll be able to match this STO for balance on the one hand, and sheer drama &amp; acoustic appeal on the other.

My only advice is this – if there’s some way you can experience this car, do so. If you can afford it, and you have access to a racetrack (and have even an ounce of petrol in your veins), for God’s sake please buy it – because there will never be another...

When behind the wheel, most people use only partial vision, limited motor skills and less than a quarter of their brainpower. But I would argue that to truly immerse yourself, you need to drive with your whole being.

A proper driving experience is best enjoyed by all your senses – your ears, of course, the hair on the back of your neck, the pit in your stomach, your fingertips, and, of course, your derriere. I was reminded of this fact when I piloted the (dangerously desirable) <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/lamborghini-huracan-sto-launched-at-rs-499-crore-109738/">Lamborghini Huracan STO</a> recently at the BIC – the review of which you’ll find elsewhere in this issue. But, when the adrenaline receded, I was left with a sense of loss. Of mourning.

You see, the STO is powered by an endangered species – the naturally aspirated motor! For all intents and purposes, it hasn’t evolved much over the past century. And while, on a Darwinian timescale, you can’t fault it, but at a time as tumultuous as this, the trusty NA ICE (Naturally Aspirated Internal Combustion Engine) finds itself going the way of the Dodos.

And while I don’t think of myself as a Luddite – tech continues to astound me and worrying about the environment keeps me up some nights – but there’s simply no way an EV, no matter how fast, can match a car like the STO for driving appeal. Sure, an EV would beat it off the line, while the STO’s 5.2-litre V10 laboriously attempts to convert heat into propulsion, but the EV is a one-trick pony while the STO is only just letting its 630 horses out of their stable.

The way a naturally aspirated engine revs – in this case, all the way to 8,000rpm – builds velocity (not only at ridiculous speed, but also in a manner that increases your heart rate at the same pace), and that’s to say nothing of the accompanying orchestra, it’s a confluence of sensations that has to be experienced to be believed. And then there’s the collection of exotic materials that make up this fire-breathing supercar, all of which ensures that it weighs about half that of an equivalent EV. As Colin Chapman said, “simplify, then add lightness.” There’s simply no way you can make a battery-powered car dance quite like this. Sure, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/quattroruote/porsche-taycan-review-road-test-108115/">Porsche Taycan</a> sticks to the road with physics-defying levels of adhesion, but can it tap dance around corners like this Lambo? No way!

Now, there’s no doubt that super sports cars will get even faster over time, but my fear is that they’ll also lose some of their rawness, their fleet-footedness, and their aural appeal. Once the beating heart of a Lambo is replaced by ones and zeros, is there really any place for that raging bull on the bonnet?

Lamborghini India has been impressing us with its sales milestones and now the firm reports the highest-ever sales.

Just a few days to wrap up 2021 and Lamborghini India has reported its highest-ever sales numbers. The Italian supercar maker has recorded a growth of 20 per cent in H1 of 2021. The numbers haven’t been revealed, however, the sales have surpassed the previous high of 52 units recorded in 2019.

The demand has been improving from October 2020, and the waiting period is up to 7-12 months depending on the model. In 2021, <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/lamborghini-sells-300-cars-in-india-110096/">Lamborghini India reported cumulative sales of 300 units</a>, and around the same time, the firm sold its 100th Lamborghini Urus in India.

The last launch from Lamborghini India was the Huracan STO which is priced at Rs. 4.99 crore (ex-showroom). This racecar for the road gets a 5.2-litre V10 which is capable enough to push out 630bhp and 565Nm. The more exciting bit of this supercar is the mechanicals and other components which are inspired by Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO and GT3 EVO racecars.

Elements such as 20 per cent lightweight windscreen, carbon fibre body panels, new air vents and air splitters, NACA-style air intakes – It helps increase downforce – and an adjustable single-slotted rear wing enhances STO’s aerodynamic capabilities.

Lamborghini India also has the Aventador and Urus on sale and all of the models are available in multiple variants and you can option yours with a number of personalised touches.

The launch of a new Lamborghini model is always an exciting moment for us as well as Lamborghini fans across the country. However, that excitement has been dialled up a notch, courtesy of the new Huracan STO.

The fifth iteration of the Huracan EVO arrives in India in the form of the range-topping Huracan STO – the successor to the Huracan Performante.

Last month, Lamborghini <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/lamborghini-huracan-evo-rwd-spyder-launched-in-india-109556/">launched the Huracan EVO RWD Spyder in India</a> for those who admire the thrills of open-top motoring. And&nbsp;now, hot on the heels of the convertible, Lamborghini has also brought the most extreme version of the Huracan to our shores – the Huracan STO – at a whopping price of&nbsp;₹4.99 crores (ex-showroom).

Unlike the previous hardcore Huracan, the Performante, which was adapted for track use&nbsp;from&nbsp;a road-going car, the Huracan STO does it the other way around, as it is a purpose-built track weapon that's been homologated&nbsp;for road use. This is also evident in&nbsp;its STO moniker, which stands for Super Trofeo Omologata and broadly translates into 'race&nbsp;car homologated'. Plus, it's been developed in conjunction with&nbsp;Lamborghini's Squadra Corse racing division. Therefore, it finds its roots in the Huracan Super Trofeo EVO and the three-time 24 Hours of Daytona-winning Huracan GT3 EVO race cars.

The Huracan STO is powered by&nbsp;the same 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 as the Huracan EVO/Performante, with an&nbsp;unchanged power output of 630bhp. However, the torque rating has gone down from&nbsp;the EVO/Performante's 600Nm to&nbsp;565Nm @ 6,500rpm. This, however, does not indicate a reduction in overall performance in any way because of the extreme weight-shedding and aerodynamic wizardry that's been employed in the Huracan STO.

It can dismiss the 0 – 100km/h mark in just three seconds and needs only nine seconds to reach 200km/h from a standstill. The top speed is capped&nbsp;at 310km/h.&nbsp;Being a thorough-bred track weapon, the Huracan STO remains rear-wheel-drive only and features three new driving&nbsp;modes – STO, Trofeo, and Pioggia (Rain) – which work with the Lamborghini Veicolo Dinamica Integrata (LDVI) system.

With more than&nbsp;75% of the bodywork done in carbon fibre, the Huracan STO weighs just 1,339kgs (dry weight), which makes it&nbsp;43kgs lighter than the Performante. It's a result of bits like the windscreen that's&nbsp;been made 20% lighter than before. Even the&nbsp;entire front section (cofango), comprising&nbsp;the bonnet, fenders, and bumper, is now a single-piece unit.&nbsp;New air vents on the bonnet, coupled&nbsp;with a new front splitter, and additional louvres on the fenders further optimise airflow to the engine and front wheels. The rear fenders feature&nbsp;NACA-style air intakes, which&nbsp;also help increase downforce, and a&nbsp;manually-adjustable single-slotted rear wing, with double airfoil, increases&nbsp;the Huracan STO's aerodynamic capability further. Thanks to these tweaks, the Huracan STO offers&nbsp;53% better downforce than the Huracan Performante.

In terms of equipment, the Huracan STO benefits from new F1-style Brembo CCM-R carbon-ceramic brakes that help it come to a dead stop from 100km/h in just 30 metres.

Lamborghini Huracan STO launched at Rs 4.99 crore

Hot on the heels of the Huracan EVO RWD Spyder, Lamborghini has now brought the most extreme version of the model to our shores – the Huracan STO – at a whopping price of ₹4.99 crores (ex-showroom). It's the fifth iteration of the Huracan EVO in India and the successor to the Huracan Performante.
