Le Mans 24 Hours: BMW Tops First Qualifying Session; Toyota Brings out Red Flag

In 2024 Le Mans, Porsche, Ferrari, and Toyota were considered the heavy favourites for provisional pole position, but BMW surprised everyone by taking first place in qualifying.

<p>The Bugatti Bolide was first shown off as an outlandish notion, but it has now evolved into one of French company's most daring endeavours. Bugatti stated in 2021 that the track-only W16 hypercar will enter restricted production, with a three-year development schedule preceding 2024 deliveries. Each of the 40 models will set its owner back EUR 4 million and include a stripped-down, lightweight body and legendary quad-turbocharged W16 power plant. At the 100th anniversary of the Le Mans 24 Hours, the Bugatti Bolide was shown to the public just before initial deliveries began. Although Bugatti did not take part in the 100th anniversary running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, its history is inextricably intertwined with the legendary event. Having its new, over-the-top hypercar debut at the circuit during the 24 Hours of Le Mans is a fitting way to introduce it to the world.</p>

<p>Bugatti's newest and wildest creation, the Bolide, was unveiled to the public at the same time as the celebration of 100 years of Le Mans. In honour of the historic event, the track-only hypercar was driven around the famed Circuit de la Sarthe once before the green flag was dropped to start the competition.</p>

<p>Andy Wallace, a veteran of the event, drove the vehicle. In 1988, he won the race and joined an exclusive group of racing car drivers who had also triumphed at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring before retiring.</p>

<h2>Bugatti Bolide: Design</h2>

<p>The production Bolide will produce almost three tonnes of downforce. When the air is compressed at the front by the splitter and then let to expand beneath the diffuser, a suction action is created that helps to lower the Bolide to the earth. Specialised air curtains in front of the front wheels deflect air away from the automobile, therefore lowering drag. In order to maximise efficiency, Bugatti fashioned the wing mirrors to channel air into the side intercoolers.</p>

The world was introduced to the Bolide, Bugatti's newest and craziest invention, at the same time as the 100th anniversary of the Le Mans race was being celebrated. Before the competition began, the track-only hypercar was given a ceremonial lap of the legendary Circuit de la Sarthe.

<p>Le Mans 24 Hours: With the new 499P Le Mans Hypercar, Italian firm Ferrari returned to top-level racing at the Circuit de la Sarthe, and the #51 crew scored Ferrari its first outright Le Mans triumph. Ahead of Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley, and Ryo Hirakawa in the #8 Toyota GR010 HYBRID, Pier Guidi crossed the finish line first. The Cadillac V-Series ranked third, earning a place on the podium. Alex Lynn, Earl Bamber, and Richard Westbrook's R was one lap behind the winning Ferrari. Peugeot and Porsche, the only two other Hypercar manufacturers, had some bad luck in those events. Both of Peugeot's unconventional 9X9s were in the thick of the lead battle early on, but Jean-Eric Vergne lost two laps when his car spun because of wet conditions at Mulsanne corner, and Gustavo Menezes encountered a wreck at the first Mulsanne chicane. The three Porsche 963 LMDhs entered by Penske fared significantly worse, suffering various delays throughout the race.</p>

<h2>Le Mans 24 Hours: Hypercar Race Result</h2>

<p>Porsche #75 &nbsp;with a fuel pressure issue was the first Hypercar to withdraw, and then Kevin Estre's accident at the Porsche Curves dropped the manufacturer's best-placed car (#6) out of the race, causing the team to lose even more time, as they had to replace the hybrid battery.</p>

<p>After suffering setbacks caused by a puncture and a leak in the cooling system, the #5 machine driven by Porsche was on track to finish in fifth place. However, in the last hour of the race, it had an unidentified technical failure that caused it to fall to ninth place.</p>

<h2>Le Mans 24 Hours: Corvette Racing Wins GTE Class</h2>

<p>Before the GTE class retires in favour of GT3 vehicles in 2024, Corvette Racing managed to achieve a fitting last win for GTE equipment at Le Mans. A 10-minute pit stop to fix a front damper cost the lone C8.R two laps, and when the safety car came out early to let several cars back on the track, the C8.R still couldn't make up any ground. Due to Nicky Catsburg, Nico Varrone, and Ben Keating's lightning-fast driving, the #33 car was able to recover and rejoin the lead lap by the 16th hour, thanks to a flawless performance afterwards.</p>

<p>The Iron Dames Porsche 911 RSR-19 of Rahel Frey, Michelle Gatting, and Sarah Bovy lost their lead to the Corvette in the 21st hour. After the ORT by TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage lost distance overnight due to a puncture and a drive-through penalty, Frey fell to a lower position.</p>

<p>The #33 TF Sport vehicle&nbsp;crossed the finish line two minutes behind the Corvette, with the GR Racing Porsche preventing the Iron Dames car from taking third. The Rexy-liveried AO Racing-Project 1 Porsche was in the hunt for the podium until a problem forced them to pull off the track.</p>

<p>Jimmie Johnson, Jenson Button, and Mike Rockefeller's Garage 56 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 NASCAR Cup car had a number of delays in the closing stages due to what seemed to be gearbox troubles, causing it to finish in 38th place. The number of classified cars (39 out of 62) was the lowest since the 2015 event.<br />

<h2>Le Man 24 Hours: Origins</h2>

<p>The Automobile Club de l'Ouest, a car club, started the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1906. The first event took place on May 26-27, 1923, at a track not far from Le Mans. The goal of the contest was to inspire further ground-breaking work in the realm of automotive technology and to spur on its further advancement. From the invention of the radial tyre through the development of the hybrid engine, technological progress has been rapid. With the goal of having a hydrogen-powered vehicle compete in the 2024 race, the ACO has given itself a new challenge, Mission H24. One unique aspect of the 24 Hours of Le Mans course is that it includes public highways. It has been redesigned multiple times throughout the years to improve racer safety and is presently 13.626km in length. The 24 Hours of Le Mans course has many high-speed corners, including the Pit Straight, the Dunlop Chicane, the Forest Esses, Mulsanne and the Ford Chicane.</p>

<h2>Le Mans 24 hours: Post-World War</h2>

<p>Le Mans was put on hold for eight years due to the onset of World War II (1940-1948), but it returned in 1949 with a whole new design and feel. Pit lanes and refreshment stalls, for example, had appeared by this time to accommodate the expanding crowd. With the race becoming more of an event, the latter group may even eat at a special restaurant. Pierre Marechal's untimely death three hours into the race when his brakes failed ruined a comeback that had been eagerly anticipated.</p>

<p>In 1955, one of the darkest periods in racing history, tragedy struck again. French driver Pierre Leveghchar's automobile crashed with spectators, killing 84 people in the so-called "Le Mans Disaster." Moreover, over a hundred individuals suffered life-threatening injuries. The day's events were a low point for the competition and for sports in general, and they prompted the implementation of new safety measures. The following year saw the installation of barricades.&nbsp;</p>

<p>About this time, opening laps underwent a major overhaul that had been long overdue. Sprint starts were popular from the first race until 1969. And we mean "sprint starts" in the most literal sense possible. Drivers, incredulously, would start a race on the side of the track opposite their car. They would literally sprint to their vehicles and crank the engines when the starting gun sounded. Despite widespread acclaim as iconic (if a little retrograde), this quickly became a source of potentially catastrophic issues.</p>

<p>John Woolfe, a British driver, tragically passed away on the first lap of the 1969 race after an ill-fated rush in which he neglected to tighten his seatbelt. The course had extensive alterations in the 1970s, most noticeably towards its conclusion. The purpose of creating these was to put the skills of professional drivers to the test even more. As the difficulty of the task increased, so did the quality of the show.</p>

Only one individual has ever gone undefeated. The legendary Graham Hill finally succeeded on the ninth try in 1969. From 1981 to 1988, with three distinct Porsche models, the 936, 956, and 962C, Bell managed to achieve four victories and three podium finishes.</p>

<h2>Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela</h2>

<p>All five of Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela's Le Mans triumphs occurred when the two were teammates. Between 2000 and 2007, Pirro and Biela won the Le Mans race five times. Their success included an impressive streak of three consecutive wins from 2000 to 2002, followed by another remarkable back-to-back victory in 2006 and 2007.</p>

<p>In 1999, during the height of the manufacturer boom at Le Mans, Audi, which was known more for its triumphs in rallying and touring cars, entered the event. Audi has been victorious in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 13 separate occasions: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After a successful 1950 season with slightly modified XK120s, Jaguar decided to pursue Le Mans seriously. Jaguar has taken first place in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on seven separate occasions (1951, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1988, and 1990).</p>
