Christian Horner defended Perez by saying, "On one side, elated to have won the race, keeping that winning momentum going. But on the other side, desperately disappointed for Checo, going for the lead of the race, a racing accident down at Turn 1. To go out on the first lap in front of your home crowd is really painful for him. He was very emotional as you can imagine, but he is a racing driver – he had to go for it. You can’t place the blame on any of the drivers, three into one is always going to be tough into one corner. And he had a rocket ship start, probably his best start of the year. And he was going for it in front of his home crowd."

"It is tough for him, but he is our driver and we want him to achieve what we know he is capable of, and we’ll continue to support and protect him," said Horner, when asked about the rumours that are swirling around the paddock regarding Perez’s future at the team and in the sport. Sergio Perez's home Grand Prix weekend was a disappointment because he had to retire for the second time in four races. This happened in front of a great, enthusiastic crowd, whose support he had always cherished. Red Bull should have no doubt about Ricciardo's readiness to combine with Max Verstappen again if he maintains this level of performance in the remaining races in Brazil, Las Vegas, and Abu Dhabi. Red Bull has a reputation for being pragmatic, so even if they say Perez has a future, they may replace him with Ricciardo if the latter proves to be the superior option. The fact that Perez is under contract until 2024 won't matter if he's no longer the best option. Red Bull has repeatedly proven its relentless attitude.

Ricciardo, who has already guaranteed his seat at AlphaTauri in 2024, showed admirable resolve by fighting hard with Lewis Hamilton at the start of the race. At the finish line, he was battling for sixth place with George Russell and was only half a second behind him.

After crashing into Charles Leclerc on the first corner of the opening lap, the Red Bull driver was forced to retire from the race owing to car damage. The spectacular sequence of events began as Perez, Checo, and Max Verstappen entered the first turn together.

Perez was cheered on by his enthusiastic home audience the entire time he was on the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez track. While Perez was pleased with his hourly performance overall during the qualifying sessions—he came in fifth place—he couldn't help but feel that he could have done better.&nbsp;

During the Sunday race, Perez, who had started in fifth place, took a risky lane change as he neared the first turn of the track in an attempt to make up ground quickly. He got in front of pole sitter Leclerc from the outside, while Verstappen was pressing him from the inside. Unfortunately, Perez touched with Leclerc's Ferrari's front-left wheel as he started the turn to the right. Perez's car was thrown off the track as it was briefly launched onto all three wheels by the impact. Although he made it back to the pit lane, his car was severely damaged and had to be retired immediately by Red Bull.

In the post-race Interview, the Mexican said: "To be honest, I really feel it was a racing incident. The gap was there and obviously, as a driver you take a risk, going three cars into Turn 1 with these wide cars. I took a risk. I paid a high price for it, but I was also honestly not expecting Charles to break that late, as he was in the middle so he had a bit less room for manoeuvring. I was ahead of him, I thought he was going to bail out a bit more but, obviously, in those decisions, everything happens really late and, yeah, it just happened everything a little bit too late and unfortunately I had a lot of damage on my car."

After a weekend of enthusiastic fan support, Perez's disappointing DNF capped a year that saw both highs and lows. Because of this, Lewis Hamilton is currently only 20 points behind race leader Sergio Perez in the drivers' standings, good enough for second place.

"I’m second in the championship, there are still three races to go, and I tried to go for the win at my home Grand Prix. I mean, what else could I have done? I saw the gap, I went for it. I risked it too much, but I wanted the win today," he added.

Leclerc's front wing end plate detached after he was hit, but he continued the race anyhow. The race officials looked into whether or not the driver had been reckless. In the end, they decided to do nothing further. Leclerc stayed in second place following the incident, but he was passed by Lewis Hamilton and dropped to third when a major crash involving Kevin Magnussen forced a red flag at the halfway point.

“First of all, obviously it is a really big shame it happened with Checo at his home race,” Leclerc said. “On the other hand, looking back at the images I had nowhere to go. We all brake at the same point, and then I was trying to stay on the right as close as possible to Max, but Checo I think didn’t know that Max was there, started to turn in and then we collided."

Although he made up some distance, Lando Norris's 17th-place start on soft tyres only got him to 10th by the time the race was restarted. He clawed his way back to seventh, and McLaren intentionally exchanged spots with Piastri in an attempt to attack Ricciardo. Norris accomplished this feat and finished sixth after passing Russell with five laps to go with a daring pass at Turn 6.

Russell prevailed against Ricciardo, followed by Piastri, Alex Albon of Williams, and Esteban Ocon of Alpine. Toto Wolff: "Austin was a weekend of mixed feelings. The positives are that the upgrade looks to have given us a step forward in terms of performance. Our pace was strong all weekend and it was encouraging to be in the fight for victory. The negative was of course failing to capitalise on our pace with the result. Losing a podium finish hurts and is not a position we want to find ourselves in. The complexities of a sprint weekend and a bumpy circuit caught us out. But rules are rules. We will learn from this and improve. Now we move on to the next race.

"Mexico is always an exciting weekend. The fans are super passionate and energetic. The venue also presents a unique challenge with the high altitude. It has a major impact on how we operate the car, and it is always a challenge to find the optimum solution. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell agree that the W14 has unrealized potential, but they both accept that the Mercedes team had a difficult first day of practice in Mexico that necessitated extensive work over the weekend. There was a noticeable difference between the car Hamilton drove on Friday in Mexico and the one he drove at COTA, where he showed an encouraging pace in his improved W14 throughout the weekend. In Mexico, his fastest lap was over a second slower than Max Verstappen's quickest time in the first practice session. In spite of showing substantial improvement in the second practice session, he ended up three-tenths slower than the Dutch racer and in seventh place overall.

Reflecting on his first day of running, Hamilton stated, “Not that great. A bit of a struggle in the car today. I mean the car is night and day different compared to last week. And yeah, I don’t know what to say, you just never know what you’re going to get with this one. Some days she’s great and some days she’s not. I think it’s hard to extract the lap, I think there is definitely performance there. It’s just hard to extract it and it’s quite peaky this weekend with the aero map or whatever it might be. So, we are going to work on it overnight but definitely, it wasn’t a fun day compared to FP1 in Austin. We are a bit off but hopefully, overnight we can find something and tomorrow the car will be better to drive.”

In FP2, Lewis Hamilton secured the seventh-fastest time, while his teammate George Russell finished in the tenth position, just a couple of tenths behind Hamilton.

It is named after racing drivers Ricardo (1942–1962) and Pedro Rodríguez (1940–1971). The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is a 4.304km track in Mexico City. After Ricardo Rodriguez tragically died during practice for the non-Championship 1962 Mexican Grand Prix, the track got its name soon after it opened. Pedro Rodriguez also died in a car accident nine years later, which was very sad. The track has been the site of the Formula One Mexican Grand Prix since 2015.&nbsp;

The track is in the public park of the Magdalena Mixhuca Sports City in the southeast of Mexico City. It is owned by the government but is currently run by Corporación Interamericana de Entretenimiento (CIE), which is handled by OCESA, a CIE subsidiary. The circuit is owned by CIE and is used for many events, such as NASCAR and Desafio Corona races. It is also rented out to race organisers, car clubs, and track fans.

Nico Rosberg outqualified Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton during qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix on Saturday, taking his fourth consecutive pole position of the F1 season with a time of 1min 19.480sec around the newly re-laid and modified 4.304km Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Hamilton seemed favourite for pole going into the final leg of qualifying, having set the fastest time in FP1 and FP2. However, a mistake on turn 12 cost him dear, allowing Rosberg to qualify ahead for tomorrow’s race.
Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel set the third fastest time, with Daniil Kvyat asserting his authority at Red Bull by taking fourth, ahead of teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
The Williams pairing of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa were sixth and seventh fastest respectively, while Max Verstappen again breaked into the top 10 with the eighth quickest time.
Home-hero Sergio Perez only did a single run during the second part of Q3, when the track appeared to slow down. As a result, he will line up ninth for tomorrow’s race, sharing the fifth row of the grid with Nico Hulkenberg in the other Force India.
Unlike Verstappen, Carlos Sainz failed to make into the Q3. He was joined by the Lotus duo of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado and the Ferrari driven by Kimi Raikkonen in the list of drivers failing to make the cut. Raikkonen appeared to have brake problems in qualifying, forcing him to abort the session. He will drop five places from his original grid spot for a change of gearbox.
Earlier in Q1, former F1 world champion Fernando Alonso fell prey to the knockout qualifying system, with Felipe Nasr also not progressing beyond the opening session. Among the Manor drivers, Alexander Rossi was two tenths quicker than regular Will Stevens

Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg topped the second practice for the Mexican Grand Prix on Friday, beating the Red Bull pairing of Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo.
Mexico returns on the F1 calendar after a 23 year hiatus, with the last race in the South American country held in 1992. Support from the government has allowed for a complete revamp of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, including multiple changes to the track layout.
Initially the track remained slippery and damp, forcing drivers to venture out on the intermediate tyre. However, as the conditions improved, drivers were able to switch to the two dry compounds.
In terms of lap times, Rosberg was quickest of all, setting a time of 1:21.531. Kvyat and Ricciardo were two and three tenths slower respectively, while newly crowned triple world champion Lewis Hamilton was classified fourth.
Sebastian Vettel lapped 0.453 seconds slower than pacesetter Rosberg, whom he has vowed to beat in the drivers standings. Kimi Raikkonen finished a position behind his Ferrari teammate in fifth place.
Meanwhile, Williams - who blamed an undiscovered bump on track for a double DNF in Austin - finished seventh and tenth respectively, with Bottas leading the charge for the Grove based squad.
Encouragingly, both McLaren drivers finished in the top 10, but are set to start the Mexican Grand Prix from the back of the grid, after yet another engine change.
Force India has brought a new aero package to the Mexican Grand Prix, as they hope to spring a podium finish at Sergio Perez’s home venue. Perez was 15th fastest in FP2, four places behind Nico Hulkenberg, who has retired from five of the last eight races.
Max Verstappen slammed his Toro Rosso into the barriers at the penultimate corner, bringing the session to an abrupt halt. Bottas also damaged his car with an incident at turn 1, but was able to drive back to the pits. Several other drivers had their own share of off-track excursions.
