He believes these delays cost him the win, as he couldn't maintain momentum and effectively challenge Leclerc. Piastri also pointed out that the time he spent overtaking Stroll while chasing Leclerc in the final stages, ultimately prevented him from closing the gap. Oscar Piastri said, ' I asked basically straight away what pace I needed to do to go and get Charles. And the pace I needed was basically what I did for the first few laps. And at that point, I was pretty optimistic. You know, I lost a decent amount of time behind Carlos. You had Stroll driving like it was his first go-kart race, and I don't know what went through his brain when he saw his blue flag.&nbsp;

‘That cost another second. And, yeah, you know, I needed that stint to be perfect to win that race. And, you know, those little things are ultimately what cost us a bit of a chance. It would have been a long shot anyway, but, yeah. It was certainly not far off from being able to achieve it. But yeah, I was pushing flat out to try and do it. I couldn't have gone any faster than that. So yep, just came up a bit short.'

Oscar Piastri showed great speed throughout the Italian Grand Prix, but bad luck and strategy errors cost him a win. Starting from the front row, Piastri lost his early lead to a Ferrari overcut. Although there were several major delays, Oscar Piastri of McLaren came out on top. The 19-lap race featured multiple safety car periods and displayed strategic dynamics among drivers, with many opting to use soft tyres for early advantages. However, as the race progressed, they encountered difficulties from tyre graining and restarts caused by the safety car. Sergio Perez's elimination after a three-car accident that prompted the third safety-car period was a turning point in the race. This incident basically ensured that Verstappen would win the championship. At the beginning of the race, Piastri, who had started on the pole with medium tyres, held on to the lead as the front-row starters, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, struggled with their yellow-walled rubber and fell behind the pack of cars that had chosen the soft tyres, which included George Russell, Carlos Sainz, and Charles Leclerc.

The race got back underway on lap 15 after the final safety car period was over. To address his tyre degradation concerns during the final safety car period, George Russell had an intense debate with his Mercedes engineer. His team, however, dismissed this suggestion. Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri quickly increased his lead over Russell, and Max Verstappen took second place with a decisive DRS-assisted move into Turn 1 on the next lap. At that time, Piastri had pulled away by 2.6 seconds from the regaining Red Bull driver.

Two of the final three laps were the fastest for Verstappen, but he was unable to cut into Piastri's lead sufficiently to make a serious challenge. Piastri maintained his lead with ease and crossed the line 1.8 seconds ahead of Verstappen. After the third safety car period ended, Lando Norris made a remarkable comeback, passing both Ferrari drivers in the first two laps to reclaim third place. In the final lap, Norris made a brilliant pass on George Russell for fourth place by going around the outside of Turn 1.

Lewis Hamilton, Russell's teammate, came in fifth. After being eliminated in Q2 of the sprint qualifying session, putting him on the grid in 12th place, Hamilton's performance jumped significantly. The crash involving Ocon, Hulkenberg, and Perez just ahead of him and the Ferrari drivers' struggles in the closing laps helped him make up ground on the field.

Last year, the French team finished in fourth place, and De Meo predicted that they will repeat that result in 2023 while also closing the performance gap with Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari.

But after the first race, the team's chances of achieving that aim were bleak, as they are currently at sixth in the constructors' championship, behind Aston Martin and McLaren. There has been a number of operational mistakes, the reliability has been poor, and the pace of progress has lagged well below expectations.

It is known that the Renault E-Tech RE23's power unit is inferior to that of other grid vehicles. That's why they're lobbying to make all electricity sources equally accessible. As it is, there is a freeze on PU development, with only improvements for dependability approved. According to reports, Renault's power shortfall to its competitors is 15kw, or around 0.25 seconds each lap. That increases to 0.4s at tracks like Silverstone. Approximately 0.1s is typical in the Hungaroring's low-speed layout.

Alpine, &nbsp;owned by Renault, is in disarray once again as the Formula 1 summer break approaches, just as it was a year ago when Fernando Alonso unexpectedly announced his departure and Oscar Piastri ruled out replacing him.&nbsp;

Silly season was in full swing a few hours later when a video appeared on the new Instagram account of the four-time World Champion declaring his retirement from Formula 1 at the end of 2022. While Alpine continues to struggle, former team members, Alonso and Piastri have found success in different environments.

A legal battle ensued between Alpine, McLaren, and the FIA about who had a legitimate contract with the young Australian for the 2023 season. The Contract Recognitions Board ultimately sided with McLaren. McLaren had a rough start to the year, to put it mildly, with a sluggish vehicle while Piastri learned the ropes and Lando Norris did his best to maintain the outstanding form he had shown in previous seasons.

Piastri, however, has been right on his teammate's pace in the last three races after a slew of upgrades and a better understanding of the car himself. In the sprint in Spa, he led his first F1 laps, qualified on the front row for that race, and came oh-so-close to a first podium finish.

During the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Alpine (previously Renault) surprised the Formula 1 paddock by announcing the departure of team principal Otmar Szafnauer and longtime sports director Alan Permane.

McLaren MCL60 has been receiving incremental upgrades, although the team's drivers and management have tried to downplay the significance of the change in preparation for recent races. Despite this, McLaren finished in the top three in last weekend's sprint races at the Red Bull Ring, Silverstone, and Spa. After a "painful" day driving the MCL60, which lacked straight-line speed, Lando Norris said it was a "good surprise" to finish seventh at the Belgian Grand Prix this past weekend. Norris had a promising starting position of seventh, but early difficulties caused him to fall out of the top ten. After failing to progress on the hard tyres, he switched to the soft and immediately fell to last place. But he fought off a late push from Esteban Ocon and moved up the standings to finish seventh. McLaren's massive wing made it far slower than the other cars on the straights but almost as quick as Red Bull in the second sector of Spa-Francorchamps, which accounts for about half of the overall lap. When the track was wet, this benefit was amplified. However, McLaren's large wing wasn't a strategic move. It originated from having no choice. There had been little time to dedicate to developing a dedicated low-downforce Spa wing due to the high manufacturing needs of the recent bodywork changes (first revealed in Austria and Silverstone). It was possible to employ a smaller wing, but doing so would have resulted in more time lost in the middle sector and less gain on the straights.

In a post-race interview, McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella said, “We have done quite a lot of work redesigning the car from the start of the season. One thing that we haven’t attacked yet is actually the car at a low drag level. So, there wasn’t much efficiency to gain by going on a small rear wing and we decided to stay at the point in which the car is most efficient. There’s not only a tactical choice based on you want to be quick in the corners and you are set to be slow in the straights; it’s more what the car has to offer as a function of the rear wing level.”

Stella realised after Sunday's race that maximising the car's performance in low-drag configuration would be crucial in getting ready for Monza in September. Norris's race on Sunday was challenging due to the wing's offset from the others, but it also produced some shining moments for the team.

Sprint race runner-up Piastri was the first driver to drop out of the main race, citing suspension problems as the cause of his retirement. The SF-23 of Sainz, which was damaged when he and Piastri collided at turn 1, was easily overtaken by Alonso and other drivers. In order to get into the scoring position, Stroll and Russell overtook Norris. Norris dropped to sixteenth after a slow pit stop.

Norris was having a bad day as well. Despite switching to hard tyres, he was overtaken on the right and left by Albon and Ocon. After falling behind Daniel Ricciardo, his ex-teammate in Les Combes, Norris raged at his team.

While Norris finished seventh, Esteban Ocon made a series of bold passes in the closing laps to climb up to eighth, including a stunning past of Yuki Tsunoda of AlphaTauri, who finished the race tenth, just behind Lance Stroll.

McLaren's weakness in Spa was due to the fact that the team had prioritised bringing the radical upgrade, even though doing so meant not having the optimal low-drag rear wing specification that would have been advantageous at the high-speed track.

Seven-time Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has heaped praise on his old team McLaren after they finished in second and fourth position at the British Grand Prix. Mercedes' driver, frustrated at his inability to pass fellow Briton Lando Norris during a late-race Safety Car, referred to Norris's highly improved MCL60 as a "rocket ship" during his post-race cool-down lap. However, Hamilton said that he was amazed by the speed of his McLaren competitors. After a poor qualifying performance on Saturday, the seven-time world champion began the race in seventh position. McLaren stole the show with a thrilling 2-3 in qualifying on Saturday and Lando Norris finished on the podium for the first time this season. McLaren's last major result came in 2021 when Daniel Ricciardo won the Italian Grand Prix.

Due to the arrival of the safety car, they were able to make pit stops at reduced costs. As a result, Norris maintained his lead over Hamilton for the second position while Piastri fell to fourth. He fought hard from the start against Verstappen, defended against George Russell, and then made a late, valiant charge on Hamilton as the Briton's tyres wore down, but ultimately came up short.

After a great start and holding P3 due to Kevin Magnussen's engine failing, the rookie McLaren driver came very close to his maiden F1 podium at Silverstone. After Lewis Hamilton's pit stop during the safety car period, the seven time world champion passed Piastri for third place and went on to secure the podium. Piastri, though, was unfazed and continued to be optimistic about McLaren's achievements in terms of vehicle performance. Meanwhile, Piastri said that finishing fourth was "bitter-sweet" since he had lost out on a podium spot because of a safety Car deployment.

After Piastri publicly rejected Alpine, McLaren and Alpine engaged in a court battle last year about who owned the rights to the potential Australian driver for 2023. With McLaren's early season struggles and Alpine's consistent point making, it seemed that he would have been better served with the French team. But at Silverstone, McLaren made up ground on Alpine and moved into sixth place among constructors.

However, McLaren won't always be the team to beat at every race. Although Norris lauded the car's speed, he noted that it is still "pretty terrible in the slow-speed corners, extremely difficult to drive." That won't help much in the next race in Hungary on July 23rd, since that track has one of the slowest average speeds of any F1 track.
