Tata's journey to 20 lakh units began with the launch of the two-door&nbsp;Sierra SUV in 1991. The introduction of the Nexon in 2017 marked the company's entry into the compact SUV segment, further expanding&nbsp;its footprint in the Indian market. Tata's reach extended beyond the compact SUV segment with the sub-compact Punch SUV in the same year. Tata&nbsp;kicked off the EV offensive in India in January 2020 when the company's first zero-emission passenger vehicle – the Nexon EV – was launched to set the tone for its transition to electric mobility in India. Its&nbsp;Punch EV is the youngest electric vehicle from the homegrown automaker. Launched in January 2024,&nbsp;the Punch EV is the 5-star rated vehicle recently tested alongside the Nexon EV by&nbsp;Bharat NCAP.&nbsp;

<h2>Tata Harrier, Safari: Save up to Rs 1.40 Lakh</h2>

To celebrate&nbsp;this achievement, Tata has launched&nbsp;the 'King of SUVs'&nbsp;campaign in India, bringing down the prices of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/harrier/">Harrier</a> and <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/safari/">Safari</a>. The Tata Safari and the Harrier can now be had at an effective starting&nbsp;price&nbsp;of Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 14.99 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. This reflects a price decrease of Rs 70,000 for the Safari&nbsp;and Rs 50,000 for the Harrier. Besides, these SUVs can be had&nbsp;with benefits of up to Rs&nbsp;1.40 lakh, although applicable&nbsp;to select variants.

<h2>Tata EVs: Save up to Rs 1.30 Lakh</h2>

As for its EV line-up including <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/nexon-ev/">Nexon EV</a>, <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/tiago-ev/">Tiago EV</a>, and <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/punch-ev/">Punch EV</a>, Tata has announced benefits ranging between Rs 30,000 and Rs 1.30 lakh. Safari, Harrier and More Help Tata Motors Cross 20 Lakh Unit Sales Milestone, Get up to Rs 1.40 Lakh Benefits

The Tata Safari and the Harrier can be had at an effective starting price of Rs 15.49 lakh and Rs 14.99 lakh, respectively. The prices are ex-showroom.

Tata Motors has updated the Punch SUV's line-up for 2024,&nbsp;by increasing prices, axing ten&nbsp;variants, and adding three new variants. In addition, market reports suggest that the range-topping Creative and Creative Flagship variants have had their feature list rejigged. As part of this revision, the Tata Punch&nbsp;no longer comes in eight Camo variants, which were&nbsp;introduced on the mid-spec Adventure and Accomplished variants. These include the Camo Adventure MT, Camo Adventure Rhythm MT, Camo Adventure AMT,&nbsp;Camo Adventure Rhythm AMT,&nbsp;Camo Accomplished MT, Camo Accomplished Dazzle MT, Camo Accomplished AMT, and&nbsp;Camo Accomplished Dazzle AMT.&nbsp;

Launched in September 2022 in India, <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/tata-punch-camo-edition-launched-at-rs-685-lakh-111582/">the&nbsp;Punch Camo&nbsp;Edition</a> was available in a&nbsp;bespoke&nbsp;Foliage Green exterior shade with dual-tone roof colour options&nbsp;(Piano Black and Pristine White). Exterior bits also included 'Camo' badging on the fenders. On the inside, the Camo Edition came with&nbsp;a combination of military green cabin accents and camouflage seat upholstery, together with&nbsp;a 7.0-inch, 6-speaker Harman infotainment system,&nbsp;16-inch charcoal-coloured diamond-cut alloy wheels, and&nbsp;a reverse parking camera. The other two variants discontinued are the&nbsp;Creative Dual Tone&nbsp;and Creative Flagship MT Dual Tone.&nbsp;

<h2>Tata Punch: New Variants&nbsp;</h2>

Nevertheless, Tata has added three new variants to the Punch line-up&nbsp;–&nbsp;Creative MT, Creative Flagship MT, and Creative AMT, available at Rs 8.85 lakh, Rs 9.60 lakh, and Rs 9.45 lakh, respectively. Prices are ex-showroom. As mentioned above, the Punch Creative and Creative Flagship have seen some updates to their&nbsp;feature list. Only electric sunroof-equipped Creative variants (Creative DT SR) now get the dual-tone paint option, while the&nbsp;Creative Flagship&nbsp;comes standard with a dual-tone paint finish.&nbsp;

<h2>Tata Punch: Updated Price List</h2>

At Rs 6.13 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Pure variant, the&nbsp;Tata Punch now starts at Rs 13,000 lower than before. At the top of the heap sits the Creative Flagship AMT DT, priced at Rs 10.20 lakh (ex-showroom). As for the CNG-powered Tata Punch, the price ranges from Rs 7.23 lakh&nbsp;for the Pure to Rs 9.85 lakh&nbsp;for the Accomplished Dazzle S. Between the two sit the Adventure (Rs 7.95 lakh), Adventure Rhythm (Rs 8.30 lakh), and Accomplished (Rs 8.95 lakh). All prices are ex-showroom.&nbsp;

<h2>Tata Punch: Powertrain</h2>

Under the hood, the Tata Punch is powered by&nbsp;a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine that makes&nbsp;86.63bhp at&nbsp;6,000rpm and&nbsp;115Nm of peak torque at 3,250rpm. This engine comes paired with either&nbsp;a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic option.&nbsp;In CNG mode, the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine cranks out 72bhp and 103Nm of torque. The CNG variants come only with a 5-speed manual transmission. Like the Altroz CNG, the Punch CNG offers a dual-cylinder setup tucked under the boot floor.&nbsp;

With a monthly sales volume of 17,978 units, the subcompact crossover saw a noteworthy 50 per cent&nbsp;YoY growth. The Maruti Suzuki&nbsp;Brezza&nbsp;is another model among the&nbsp;best-selling sub-4-metre SUVs in India, and comes in at third spot, with 15,303 sold in January. The carmaker sold 14,359 units in the corresponding month&nbsp;of the prior year, resulting in a 7 per cent&nbsp;YoY rise. As for its&nbsp;price, the SUV retails for&nbsp;Rs 8.29 lakh (base variant). Meanwhile, the top-spec variant can be had for Rs 14.14 lakh. All mentioned prices are ex-showroom figures.

<h2>Tata Punch: Engine Setup and Available Features</h2>

The mechanical configuration of the Tata Punch comprises&nbsp;a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, with the option of a manufacturer-installed CNG kit. In standard&nbsp;mode, the motor can produce&nbsp;84bhp of maximum power&nbsp;and 113Nm of peak torque. The unit is tuned to develop&nbsp;103Nm and 72bhp&nbsp;when using the CNG option. Together with the engine, there is an AMT unit and a 5-speed manual transmission available.&nbsp;

A whopping 64 per cent YoY growth resulted from this.&nbsp;The Indian manufacturer&nbsp;offers two variants&nbsp;of the Scorpio model: Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N.

<h2>Tata Punch.ev: Battery, Range</h2>

In terms of the powertrain, the new Punch.ev will be offered in two versions&nbsp;– Medium and Long Range. Expect the former to get a&nbsp;25kWh battery pack, while the latter could come with a larger 35kWh battery.

The Punch.ev will be available in five variants: Smart, Smart +, Adventure, Empowered, and Empowered +. Meanwhile, the 2,00,000-unit production milestone came in May 2023, just 20 months after the car was launched. The top-spec Creative trim, on the other hand, can be had with the same semi-digital instrument cluster seen previously in the Harrier and Safari pre-facelifts.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Tata Punch EV, expected to hit Indian roads by early 2024, will be differentiated from its&nbsp;ICE counterpart by&nbsp;EV-specific design elements, like&nbsp;a front bumper integrated with a charging port and a closed-off grille. Other bits will include LED headlamp clusters, a sunroof, new alloy wheels, and all-wheel discs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Like the new Nexon, the Punch EV could get&nbsp;a&nbsp;10.25-inch floating infotainment system and a two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated logo. <h2>Tata Punch: All Except Creative Trim to Get 4.0-inch Digital Display</h2>

But, with the digital instrument cluster, the Tata Punch will join the likes of the Hyundai Exter and others to offer this feature as standard. Market reports suggest that all trims of the Punch, save for the Creative, will be available with a 4.0-inch digital screen.

The top-spec Creative trim, on the other hand, can be had with the same semi-digital instrument cluster seen previously in the Harrier and Safari pre-facelifts. This screen displays the speed and torque meters, trip meters, odometers, service reminders, and more.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the 4.0-inch display in lower-spec variants will provide&nbsp;speed, fuel gauge, trip details, and more, except you do not get a tachometer. The same digital setup is also offered with the Tata Nexon, the Tiago, and the Tigor.&nbsp;

<h2>Tata Punch: Engine, Output</h2>

Under the hood, the Tata Punch gets two powertrain options. First is a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine that makes&nbsp;86.63bhp at&nbsp;6,000rpm and&nbsp;115Nm of peak torque at 3,250rpm. This engine comes paired with either&nbsp;a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic option. In terms of mileage,&nbsp;the Punch offers 18.97km/l (claimed).&nbsp;In CNG mode, the same engine cranks out 72bhp and 103Nm of torque. The CNG variants come only with a 5-speed manual transmission.

There is no official information available on the launch of the Punch EV as of now. The Tata Punch EV has been spotted testing once again ahead of the launch in India. Upon the market introduction, the electric variant of the Punch will lock horns with the Citroen eC3 in the country.

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno defeated its siblings and a range of models by other manufacturers to attain the top spot in the list of top-selling cars in May 2023. With more than 18,733 units sold, it came in first place, followed by its siblings, the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Wagon R, respectively. <h2>Top-Ten Best-selling&nbsp;Cars in May 2023: Baleno, Swift, Wagon R, Creta, and More</h2>

With over 18,733 units sold, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno was the best-selling vehicle in India in May 2023. The carmaker sold only 13,970 units of the Baleno in the same month last year, which gave the hatchback a year-over-year growth of 34.09 per cent.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Maruti Suzuki Swift&nbsp;with 17,346 units dispensed in May 2023, took second place on the list. On the other hand, the Wagon R grabbed third spot, with more than 16,258 units sold in the last month.&nbsp;The Wagon R hatchback year-over-year (YoY) sales decreased by 3% as compared to May of last year.

At the fifth position, the Hyundai Creta SUV imprinted its name the last month with 14,449 units sold. The Nexon, on the other hand, overtook its opponent, the Brezza, which was in sixth place with 13,398 sold units, to take the fifth spot with 14,423 units.

The Eeco, Dzire, and Punch, with 12,818 units, 11,315 units, and 11,124 units sold, respectively, took seventh, eighth, and ninth place.&nbsp;With sales of nearly 13,000 units in May 2023, the Maruti Suzuki Eeco saw an increase in monthly and yearly sales figures. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire, on the other hand, had a boost in monthly sales with over 11,300 units sold, but a 2% drop in year-over-year sales.&nbsp;With sales of just over 11,000 units in May 2023, Tata Punch came in the ninth position and reported growth in terms of MoM and YoY basis.&nbsp;

Last but not least, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga claimed the tenth spot on the list, with 10,528 units sold in the previous month. The Ertiga is the lone MPV on this list. It reported an increase twofold in monthly sales. Further, a drop of about 14% in YoY sales.&nbsp;

Maruti Suzuki announced that it dispatched 178,083 units in total in May 2023, comprising both domestic sales and exports to other countries. The automaker sold 146,596 domestically, 5,010 to other OEMs, including Toyota, and 26,477 internationally last month.&nbsp;

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno was the top-selling car in May 2023 with sales of nearly 19,000 units. It was followed by the Swift and the WagonR, with sales of 17,346 units and 16,258 units, respectively.

This all-new offering from Tata has come out of nowhere and, and as we found out after driving it, the Punch is already punching above its weight.

Just like how every teenager’s dream is to become an influencer in life these days, every car wants to be an SUV. It’s getting crazy, really. But then you’ve to understand that this is what the market wants. So, why blame a carmaker – or an influencer for that matter – when they decide to market themselves as something that they aren’t.

The latest product that wants to join the long line of SUVs in the country is the all-new Tata Punch. Inherently, it’s a jacked-up hatchback, but more importantly, it’s an interesting proposition. In usual fashion, <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/" target="_blank">Tata</a> has loaded it to the gills; it’s a funky design, and our guess is that it will be priced aggressively when it goes on sale later. But, for now, let’s find out if the Punch can walk the talk.

Puffed-Up Pupper

Based on the same ALFA-ARC platform as the Altroz, the Punch follows the company's Impact 2.0 design language. There's no denying that modern Tatas are anything but boring, and the Punch cements this belief further. Measuring in at 3.8m, the Punch is super compact, but it's got the right proportions and short overhangs. In profile, it does look like a micro-SUV, but it's more puffed up from the sides. The front end takes clear inspiration from the Harrier as it features a split headlamp setup with DRLs running on the top and the main unit is housed in the bumper. In the top-end Creative version, the headlamps feature projectors while there are also fog lamps at the bottom of the bumper. The side profile of the Punch is all about its muscles and sharp creases. 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels look good and thanks to its ground clearance of 190mm, it definitely has a purposeful look. The door handles are hidden beautifully behind the recesses on the top of the door and it's a neat touch. At 2,445mm, its wheelbase is shorter than both the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, but it still manages to look imposing thanks to the tall-boy design. The rear-end, when viewed dead-on, is perhaps the only odd bit in its design. The Punch looks too narrow and stubby with a raised rear end. The rear bumper, too, looks as if someone has pasted a big block of plastic on the car. That said, I love the tail-lamp design as they look quite smart and contemporary. Similarly, there are around 7 funky colour options available with the car with single and dual-tone finishes, all of which make it look quite funky. It's a good-looking vehicle and I feel it'll appeal to people of all age groups.

Step inside and you'll see a familiar cabin that immediately reminds you of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/altroz/" target="_blank">Altroz</a>. There are a lot of hard plastics, of course, but the overall fit and finish and quality levels are more than decent. The dashboard features a Harman 7-inch infotainment touchscreen that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Not the slickest of units, but it's bright and easily readable even under direct sunlight. There are no quick access physical buttons for the display menu and that makes navigating through different settings a little difficult. That said, you do get chunky buttons on the lower half of the dashboard. These are for defogger, fan blower speed, and temperature control.

There are a lot of variants and packages that are on offer with the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/punch/" target="_blank">Punch</a>. The car is decently kitted out as the one we were driving came equipped with automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, electronically foldable ORVMs, and more creature comforts. The front seats are spacious and there's a decent amount of headroom and legroom. Since this is a tall car, you sit in an upright position, which is quite comfortable. Like the Altroz, the doors open at a full 90-degree tilt, meaning getting in and out of car is a breeze. That said, you got to do a bit of yoga stretch to get hold of the door to shut it.

Thanks to its small footprint, the rear bench is quite tight. You'll however notice there's ample knee room and the seats offer great under-thigh support. With a flat floor, 3 adults can sit on the backbench, but the narrow width of the car can be a limitation. You also get a rear armrest in this Creative trim. There are no rear AC vents though, but I don't think they'll be missed because the car's main unit chills the cabin pretty quickly.

The Punch's boot space is 366 litres, which is quite big for a car of its size. The luggage compartment is deep, meaning you can load it up with big suitcases easily.

Packs a Punch?

Powering the Punch is the same 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron petrol motor as the Tiago and Altroz. It's a non-turbo unit that develops 85bhp and 113Nm of torque. Power transmission duties are carried out by either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. And it's FWD like all the modern pseudo <a href="https://www.autox.com/suv-cars-in-india/" target="_blank">SUVs</a>.

Right after you crank the engine, it impresses you with its refinement. Even at idle, the motor doesn't thrum like a typical 3-pot motor. NVH levels are controlled well. On the go, it's smooth and offers decent performance in the low- and mid-range. Rev it&nbsp;past 4,000rpm though and you can clearly make out that it doesn't like to be thrashed. Progress is slow and the engine starts wheezing and whining if you keep the throttle pinned.

The 5-speed gearbox is another surprise. Unlike the Tiago, the gear lever doesn't shake at idle, while shifts are smooth. It has slightly long throws, but it slots in cleanly. The clutch action is also light and combined with the easy-going nature of the engine, it makes up for an effortless drive.

We also got to test the <a href="https://www.autox.com/automatic-cars-in-india/" target="_blank">AMT</a> version, it's the same ratios but does the shifting by itself. Like any AMT, it is jerky when you drive it enthusiastically and there's a long pause between each gearshift.

3rd, 4th and 5th gears are also quite tall in both the manual and AMT versions, meaning the acceleration takes a hit at speeds over 80km/h. You wish the engine had a little more punch - just for its namesake if not anything else.

It’s the matured ride-and-handling of the Punch that impressed me the most about this car. The suspension feels taut, but not excessively firm. The ride quality is supple at all times and hardly anything filters into the cabin. Only when you hit a sharp at high speeds is when the suspension bottoms out, otherwise, most of the time you’ll have no complaints from this setup. What’s more, the Punch feels planted around corners too, and that’s despite its raised suspension. It doesn’t roll excessively or feel wayward. The steering is well-weighted too and offers decent feedback. High-speed stability –up to 120km/h – is impressive, and brakes offer ample bite and feedback.

Verdict

On the whole, the Punch is a mighty package and one that's going to put the sales charts on fire. The engine performance may be a little lukewarm, but customers aren't expecting a firebreather in this segment. In all the other areas, the Punch definitely punches above its weight.

Its direct rivals&nbsp;include the Mahindra KUV100 and <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/maruti-suzuki/ignis/" target="_blank">Maruti Suzuki Ignis</a>, but given its size and pricing (expected to be between 5-8 lakh), it's also going to eat into the sales of the Grand i10 Nios and Swift, as well as the non-turbo versions of the Renault Kiger and <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/nissan/magnite/" target="_blank">Nissan Magnite</a>. All in all, it's going to get all feisty this festive season when the Punch enters the market.
