Tesla's long-awaited entry into the Indian market appears imminent, as the electric vehicle maker has begun hiring for multiple roles in the country.

What you see on the cover of November 2024 of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/magazine/" target="_blank">autoX Magazine</a> is a glimpse of our annual mega-test. Other than merely whittling this list of 50-odd vehicles down to the top-ten machines launched in the past year, what our annual mega test enables us to do is put our ear to the ground and get a real sense of which direction the winds are blowing in. Well, all signs point to it being a gust from the East!

Spoiler alert – there are two Chinese EVs in our top-five cars of 2024. And the reason for that is very clear – they really are that good, and they really do provide class-leading value. That China is a powerhouse in EVs is not a new phenomenon, but just how much of a powerhouse is worth considering. How about the fact that 70% of the world’s EVs are made in China? Or consider the fact that <a href="https://www.autox.com/opinion/dhruv-behl/of-the-340-registered-ev-makers-in-china-only-one-is-profitable-byd-116457/" target="_blank">there are almost 350 registered EV makers in China. But only one of them is profitable</a> – BYD! And, yes, one of the two EVs in our top-five is a BYD.<iframe width="400" height="345" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QZ3yIvrZnSA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>

 In Q4 of 2023, BYD overtook Tesla to become the largest EV manufacturer in the world. And in Q3 of 2024, BYD overtook Tesla in revenue for the first time. After all, BYD is the only truly vertically integrated EV manufacturer in the world today – producing its own batteries, motors, and chips. In fact, its proprietary blade batteries are perhaps the most advanced and safest battery packs around – so much so that even Tesla sources batteries for its Model Y from BYD.

Elon Musk did warn the world that it wouldn’t be the establishment that would pose a threat to his EV supremacy, but the real threat would come from China. That the traditional automakers are floundering is also not a revelation.

VW has spent the past several years developing its own EVs, but they’re simply not on par with the Chinese competition. So, VW is adopting Chinese EV platforms for its next generation of EVs – at least in China to start with. In the meantime, the German giant is planning to close three plants in its home market. Porsche, meanwhile, is talking about giving its new EV platforms ICE powertrains because of how dismal their EV sales have been of late. Across the pond, in the US, Ford is losing money on every EV sold and doesn’t expect to make a profit till 2027. The CEO of Ford, Jim Farley, even admitted to a Xiaomi SU7 being his current daily driver – presumably his way of checking out the competition. You know the world order has changed when the CEO of the car company that invented the assembly line is dailying a car made by a Chinese cell phone manufacturer.

Meanwhile, closer to home, the thaw at our Northern border may mean Chinese EV investment, which has been on ice in India thus far, may be a little closer to getting the green light. Politics aside, if the BYD Seal and MG Windsor are anything to go by, the emergence of the Chinese EV means that Indian car buyers are getting an up close and personal look at what Jim Farley and his colleagues have found – that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to compete with Chinese EVs.

The Chinese EVs That Have Been a Long Time Coming… Well, They’re Here!

You know the world order has changed when the CEO of the car company that invented the assembly line is dailying a car made by a Chinese cell phone manufacturer

Consider this, we uphold vehicles like the Tesla Cybertruck as a symbol of this new-age of green mobility, while we shun internal combustion cars like the Maruti Suzuki Swift as being antiquated and a sign of the problem. However, I urge you to take a moment to look past this veneer of new versus old and responsible versus irresponsible.

The Cybertruck weighs over three tonnes, is powered by rare earth metals and raw materials mined from conflict zones and sensitive ecological areas, while the Swift is one-third in weight and perhaps one of the most efficient vehicles to produce on the planet. So, we need to ask ourselves what we’re actually after – do we just want to fly the green flag in a vehicle that’s resource-rich and ‘apocalypse proof’ or a car that’s genuinely efficient, but doesn’t provide some of the frills and certainly none of the posturing?

I’ll give you another, less stark, example. On <a href="https://www.autox.com/magazine/vol-18-issue-12-october-2024/" target="_blank">the cover of our October issue</a>, you’ll see the brand new BMW X3 – both internal-combustion engine versions of which come with a 48V system and a small electric motor that provides a slight boost in power as well as added efficiency.

So far so good, but the 20 xDrive M-Sport model we tested, which has a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol motor, is shod with 20-inch rims and 285-section rear tires. This means, of course, that it’s got incredibly high grip levels. But does an all-wheel drive luxury SUV that produces just 208 horsepower really need such a massive footprint?

This fourth generation X3 is just another symptom of the same problem. It’s bigger, more luxurious and more tech-laden than before. And so, automakers are chasing their tails by attempting to engineer vehicles that are more efficient but also larger, more opulent and more tech-laden than before. They’re simply adding a pretence of efficiency for consumers and regulators who are content not to disrupt the facade.

What we require is car buyers to consider what they truly need in their everyday vehicles. Cars that are light and small are not just more efficient – to build as well as to run – but they’re also more fun to drive.

So, unless we introspect into what’s behind the flag waving and posturing, we’ll soon be heading for the apocalypse that the armour-plated Cybertruck is trying to protect us from.

<h2>Tesla Model Y Facelift: Battery and Range Details</h2>

Currently, only the Long Range AWD and RWD variants have received updates. The claimed ranges according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) are 719km for the AWD model and 662km for the RWD model, reflecting improvements of 117km and 59km, respectively, over the previous-generation version.&nbsp;

The acceleration time from 0 to 100km/h has also been shortened by 0.5 seconds, with the AWD model reaching the speed in 4.3 seconds, and the single-motor version doing so in 5.9 seconds. The maximum charging speed stays at 250kW, allowing for a 266km range gain in&nbsp;15 minutes.

<h2>Tesla Model Y Facelift: Colour Options and Design&nbsp;Cues</h2>

The Tesla Model Y is available in five exciting paint jobs. In Australia, these are Ultra Red,&nbsp;Glacier Blue (newly introduced), Stealth Grey, Quicksilver, and Pearl White Multi-Coat. In China, the options&nbsp;are largely the same, though with minor name variations.

While the new Model Y maintains its overall size and shape, it features a significant redesign. The bumpers have been reworked to lower the drag coefficient to 0.22 Cd, down from the pre-facelift model’s 0.23 Cd. At the rear, a ducktail spoiler is added, paired with a more athletic diffuser. The front now includes sleek, narrow headlights linked by a light strip across the hood. At the back, the Model 3's taillights are connected with a red light bar. The front bumper also gets a new look with updated air vents, rounding out the major design changes. Additional updates include side mirror turn signals and a front bumper camera. These updates align with design features seen in Tesla’s Cybertruck and Cybercab. Customers can choose between 19-inch black wheels or 20-inch silver wheels. The second-row seating has been made roomier, while the boot space has expanded by 100 litres, offering 2,130 litres when the seats are folded.&nbsp;Deliveries of the facelifted Model Y are set to start in May 2025 in regions where it has already been announced, including China, New Zealand, and Australia. The new features on the Tesla Model Y Facelift come in the form of an 8-inch display for rear passengers, ventilated front seats, as well as a reworked steering wheel.

The Xiaomi YU7 electric SUV, the Chinese company's second production-spec model after the SU7 sedan, has been leaked in China. A&nbsp;public sales license filing with China's&nbsp;Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and official images later posted by Xiaomi fully reveal&nbsp;the electric SUV's exterior design; however, the vehicle you see in the photos&nbsp;is for the Chinese market. Dimensionally, the YU7 looks very similar to the SU7 launched in China&nbsp;in March 2024, save for its height.&nbsp;It is&nbsp;4,999mm long,&nbsp;1,996mm wide, and&nbsp;1,600mm high (up by 145mm), with a wheelbase of 3,000mm. The car's kerb weight stands at 2,405kg.&nbsp;

Even the styling cues have been borrowed from the sedan sibling, with the YU7 featuring teardrop-shaped LED headlamps, sharp creases,&nbsp;sleek greenhouse, and connected LED taillamps. The electric SUV has more flared wheel arches, a raised bonnet, and a new wheel design compared to the electric sedan. It also has a ducktail spoiler and a distinctive roofline. The MIIT filing further tells us that the new vehicle will be built&nbsp;in the brand's Beijing factory, from where Xiaomi recently rolled out the 1,00,000th unit of the SU7.&nbsp;

<h2>Xiaomi YU7: Powertrain</h2>

Under the hood, the YU7 gets a dual-motor setup&nbsp;– one on the front and the other on the rear axle. The front motor is tuned to produce 295bhp, while the rear develops 386bhp, offering a combined power output of 681bhp. This makes it more powerful than the top-spec SU7 Max, which pumps out 664bhp.&nbsp;The top speed is rated for 253km/h. The battery specifications are under wraps, but we do know that the SUV will come with a&nbsp;CATL-sourced lithium NMC battery.&nbsp;

Xiaomi also has yet to reveal the interior design of the YUV. Expected bits include a&nbsp;sizeable multimedia panel for music, navigation, and car-related information, as well as a digital instrument cluster and two&nbsp;screens for rear-seat occupants. Apart from that, the YU7 could offer a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor for autonomous driving capabilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Xiaomi will launch the YU7 SUV in the home country next year. The model is anticipated to be priced between 2.50 lakh and 3.50 lakh yuan (Rs 29 lakh and Rs 41 lakh). For context, the Tesla Model Y ranges from&nbsp;249,900 yuan (roughly Rs 29 lakh) in China.

The robotaxi is designed specifically as an autonomous vehicle, omitting a steering wheel and pedals, which means it will require regulatory approval before production can begin. Its futuristic design features doors that open upward like butterfly wings and a compact cabin designed for just two passengers. There are no steering controls or pedals, and it does not have a plug – Musk noted that the vehicle charges inductively, allowing for wireless power restoration.&nbsp;The CyberCab&nbsp;sports&nbsp;a light bar each at the front and rear, and large wheels with big disc-like covers as well. Moreover, the dashboard only&nbsp;has a screen in the centre.

<a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/hyundai/">Hyundai</a> has unveiled the&nbsp;2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 equipped with Tesla's NACS (North American Charging Standard)&nbsp;charging port. This makes it Hyundai's&nbsp;first US model to feature a NACS connector. As a result, customers can use&nbsp;more than 17,000 <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tesla/">Tesla</a> superchargers&nbsp;alongside the fast chargers&nbsp;already available.&nbsp;Along with a NACS port, the updated Ioniq 5 also brings more range as well as a new off-road-focused XRT variant.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Speaking of the XRT, the new off-road variant is positioned between the standard model and the high-performance Ioniq 5 N. The latter made its global debut in July 2023 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. While the Ioniq 5 N sits on&nbsp;21-inch forged aluminium wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tyres, the new Ioniq 5 XRT features&nbsp;18-inch&nbsp;aluminium wheels with all-terrain tyres. The XRT additionally&nbsp;gets an increased ground clearance, improved rake front and rear, and suspension tuning. Compared to the standard Ioniq 5, the XRT has a more rugged design with distinctive bumpers, digital camo pattern, black side skirts and Hyundai badges, as well as the HTRAC Liftgate badge and the IONIQ 5 badging.&nbsp;

Other bits include black mirror caps, red-painted tow hooks, and the XRT logo inscribed on the rear apron. Exterior colour options are&nbsp;Ultimate Red and&nbsp;Cosmic Blue Pearl. The interior of the XRT includes a black headliner, all-weather floor mats, and H-Tex seats with XRT-exclusive patterning. As for the powertrain, the off-road variant is equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup and an 84kWh battery pack. Power and range&nbsp;are&nbsp;still under wraps.&nbsp;

<h2>2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5: Battery, Range&nbsp;</h2>

While the XRT gets only a bigger battery with&nbsp;AWD, the rest of the Ioniq 5 comes with two&nbsp;battery sizes – 63kWh (up from 58kWh) and 84kWh (up from 77.4kWh)&nbsp;– and is available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The 2025 Ioniq 5 RWD offers a claimed range of&nbsp;around 498km for the SE, SEL, and&nbsp;Limited variants, while the SE Standard Range (in RWD guise)&nbsp;has a 387km range. The AWD variants' range varies from 402km to 450km, depending on the variant selected.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Apart from revised bumpers, the&nbsp;2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 (non-XRT) gets a new rear spoiler, flush-type roof side rails, more aero-efficient wheels, and new colourways&nbsp;(Atlas White Matte, Ecotronic Gray Matte, Celadon Gray Matte). On the inside, the vehicle offers a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, redesigned HVAC controls, a new steering wheel, heated rear seats (SEL and above), a new centre console with physical seat heater controls, and USB-C ports.&nbsp;

<h2>2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5: Safety Kit</h2>

Safety-wise, Hyundai has equipped the 2025 version of the Ioniq 5 with a rear windshield wiper and washer, remote parking assist, blind-spot collision warning and assist, forward attention warning, advanced rear occupant alert, better side collision protection, parking distance warning and assist, and eight airbags.&nbsp;

Apple may have given up its grand plans of creating a car to rival Tesla, but that doesn’t mean it’s parked its long-standing aim of automotive dominance. Project Titan, Apple’s thus far top-secret car development program, has been shelved in favour of a more insidious plan to take over the screens in your car.

And while the industry may be wary – for fear of losing data, control and potential revenue as a result – for car users this is mostly a good thing. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have become so ubiquitous that pretty much every new car on the market today has no option but to offer these connectivity options as standard features.

In fact, Ferrari has become the first automaker that’s <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/ferrari-12cilindri-purosangue-and-more-future-models-to-drop-built-in-satellite-navigation-system-117642/">decided not to provide a native navigation system in its new models</a> – presumably because all its well-heeled clienti already prefer to mirror whichever Maps they favour on their phones. Truth be told, though, you don’t need Ferrari wherewithal for this. Perhaps much to the dismay of automakers who slave over in-car systems, we all use Google Maps anyway! And that’s because the maps on our phones are more accurate, more intuitive, and, most importantly, provide real world traffic information that’s far better than anything the in-built system can do.

General Motors, however, is taking the fight to the likes of Apple and Google by threatening to stop offering CarPlay and Android Auto in its new models. At this point, though, not only are these systems ubiquitous but they’re also mandatory as far as car buyers are concerned, so I wouldn’t be surprised if GM rolls back this decision once customers start voting with their chequebooks – which is to say by keeping them closed.

After all, technology companies like Apple, Google and Amazon have so much more data and expertise in developing intuitive screen interfaces and apps that it makes sense for automakers to stick to doing what they do best – develop great cars – while letting the tech giants do what they do best.

The next phase of development for Apple is to offer CarPlay options that take over each of the many screens in your new car. They’re in the process of co-developing customisable solutions with automakers that would enable them to create interfaces for all the screens, right from the instrument cluster to the various infotainment displays.

But all is not lost for automakers. While connectivity issues and clumsy interfaces are the number one complaint for new car buyers across the globe, some carmakers do it better than others. <a href="https://www.autox.com/exclusive-stories/bmw-7-series-interior-review-the-big-bang-theory-116121/">BMW perhaps does it best with it’s iDrive system</a>. But keep in mind that it’s been working on the system for over two decades now. Similarly, Mercedes-Benz, with the latest version of its MBUX system, is offering augmented reality driving directions using its own OS that’s integrated with the car’s front-facing cameras. In fact, this is already being offered on the brand new EQA that’s featured <a href="https://www.autox.com/subscriptions/">in this issue</a>.

So, the key for both Apple and the automakers will be to merge the skillset of their respective experts to provide a seamless, intuitive and user-friendly in-car UI and UX. Frankly, since carmakers simply can’t keep Apple out of the cockpit, they may as well work with them to ensure that they retain their own identity while also keeping their drivers happy.

<h2>Tesla Cybertruck: Key Highlights</h2>

The electrified&nbsp;Cybertruck has a bold yet minimalist design.&nbsp;It comes standard with air suspension and is offered in three distinct versions (Cyberbeast, All-Wheel Drive, and Rear-Wheel Drive).&nbsp;The Cyberbeast model can go from a standstill to 100km/h in 2.6 seconds and achieve a top speed of 209km/h.&nbsp;It is capable of producing 845bhp and approximately 14,000Nm.&nbsp;The AWD variant, on the other hand, delivers 600bhp of power and a maximum range of 550 kilometres.&nbsp;The RWD version has a maximum range of 400 kilometers and a towing capability of 3,400 kg.
