Bajaj Auto has just&nbsp;launched the updated Pulsar NS lineup in India, consisting of the NS200, NS160, and NS125. For 2024, the refreshed motorcycles bring changes in the form of revised styling and a new LCD console. The company has priced the NS200 and the NS160 at Rs 1.57 lakh and Rs 1.46 lakh, respectively. The former has rivals in the form of the&nbsp;KTM 200 Duke (Rs 1.97 lakh), the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V (Rs 1.47 lakh), and the Honda Hornet 2.0 (Rs 1.39 lakh), while the latter takes on the likes of the&nbsp;Hero Xtreme 160R 4V (Rs 1.27 lakh to Rs 1.37 lakh), the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V (Rs 1.24 lakh to Rs 1.38 lakh), and the Bajaj Pulsar N160 (Rs 1.46 lakh).

Meanwhile, the NS125 carries a sticker price of Rs 1.05 lakh and, at this price, it competes against the Hero Xtreme 125R (Rs 95,000 to Rs 99,500) and the TVS Raider 125 (Rs 95,219 to Rs 1.03 lakh). The&nbsp;prices are ex-showroom, Delhi. We compare the Bajaj Pulsar NS200 with its close competitor, the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V, to see how they fare against each other.&nbsp;

The biggest update to the&nbsp;Pulsar NS200 is in the form of a digital console, which is a&nbsp;Bluetooth-enabled LCD instrument cluster. Once paired with a smartphone, it displays turn-by-turn navigation,&nbsp;distance to empty, real-time and average mileage, and call/SMS notifications. Furthermore, Bajaj has given the motorcycle an additional switch on the left switchgear.&nbsp;Similar features&nbsp;are available with the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V; except that the riding modes are only offered with this bike: Sport, Urban, and Rain.&nbsp;

<h2>TVS Apache RTR 200 4V: Key Details</h2>

The TVS Apache RTR 200 is a specially built&nbsp;racing bike that uses a 4-valve oil-cooled Fi&nbsp;engine that&nbsp;delivers&nbsp;20.82bhp of maximum power at&nbsp;9,000rpm and 17.25Nm of peak torque at 7,250rpm. This engine comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Feature-wise, the bike gets an AHO LED headlamp, adjustable clutch levers, a digital&nbsp;instrument cluster with Bluetooth, an electric start, an engine kill switch, riding modes, and more.

In terms of suspension, the bike&nbsp;is equipped with&nbsp;front telescopic forks with preload adjuster and rear monotube shock absorbers. Petronas TVS Racing Announces One Make Championship Rider Lineup

Petronas TVS Racing has selected 16 fastest riders from 31 journalists and influencers across the country. While 12 riders were shortlisted from the rookie category to race this year.

TVS has updated the RTR 200 4V for the model year 2022. The motorcycle gets a very minor cosmetic update and a nominal price hike of Rs. 800.

Earlier this year, <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/tvs/">TVS</a> updated its Apache RTR 160 4V. Now, similar updates have been carried forward to the bigger <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/tvs/apache-rtr-200-4v/">Apache RTR 200 4V</a>. The 200cc motorcycle now gets a new headlamp assembly. The arrangement includes an all-LED unit for high, as well as, low beams. The cluster includes a horizontal all-LED DRL as well. Other than the new headlamp assembly, the motorcycle features the same styling as before. The fuel tank design, body panels and ergonomics are exactly the same as before.

The motorcycle continues with the same engine as before. The source of power is a single-cylinder, 197.75cc, oil-cooled unit. The engine is tuned to produce 20.5bhp at 9,000rpm and 17.25Nm at 7,800rpm, and all of it is forwarded to the wheel via a five-speed gearbox. The motorcycle also gets multiple riding modes as well. Other convenience features have been carried forward in the new motorcycle as is.&nbsp;

Other cycle parts such as Showa sourced front and rear suspension units have been carried forward as well. The motorcycle gets the disc brake arrangement on either end, and the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V is available in two variants – single and dual-channel ABS.

The single-channel ABS is priced at Rs. 1.33 lakh (ex-showroom), whereas the dual-channel ABS variant asks for Rs. 1.38 lakh (ex-showroom). The motorcycle mainly rivals the Bajaj NS200 and the Yamaha MT-15, but the prices of the 2022 Apache RTR 200 4V are comparable with the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/bajaj/">Bajaj</a> N250’s price&nbsp;as well.

TVS has equipped the Apache RTR 200 4V with some segment-first features, which make the 200cc motorcycle more adaptable than ever.

The TVS Apache RTR 200 4V has received yet another set of upgrades – a handful of segment-first features, which have made it more adaptable than ever. Apart from the new features, a new Matte Blue colour option has been added alongside Gloss Black and Pearl White, which have been inspired by TVS Racing's one-make championship race bike. Post the updates, the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V (with dual-channel ABS) is priced at&nbsp;₹1.31 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Speaking of updates, the 2020 iteration of the Apache RTR 200 4V comes with new ride modes&nbsp;–&nbsp;Sport, Urban, and Rain. As the name suggests, the Sport mode offers maximum engine performance, and the system even alters the ABS setting for minimal intervention. The ABS works at its best&nbsp;in Rain mode, allowing the rider to have maximum control while braking on wet surfaces. The Urban mode offers an overall&nbsp;balanced combination&nbsp;by striking&nbsp;a balance between engine and braking performance.

Other new features come in the form of a&nbsp;Showa suspension setup, which offers front preload&nbsp;adjustment. As a result, a rider can self-adjust the front suspension to alter the bike's ride. Even the brake and clutch levers now offer three-step adjustment, which further enhances the Apache RTR 200's ability of&nbsp;rider-specific customisation. To help the performance, the bike has also undergone a 1kg weight reduction.

The TVS Apache RTR 200 4V BS6 and Hero Xpulse 200 couldn't be more different from one another. However, since they both lie in the same price bracket, we decided to pit them against one another.

Both are 200cc bikes &amp; both are recipients of the Indian Motorcycle of the Year award. But they’re poles apart. So, which will win this unusual cross-segment comparison?

If you’re like me and you often find it tough to decide the kind of riding style you enjoy more, then I’m sure that, at least once in your life, you must have found yourself confounded by the following question – what kind of motorcycle should I buy? If I had enough money, I’d have bought every kind there is. You see, I love to ride fast and take on a nice section of sweeping corners, but I also like to cruise on the open highway, and, when the time is right, I never miss an opportunity to hit the dirt trails or go on an occasional Ladakh or Spiti trip. And do I also need to mention my fondness for hardcore technical off-road courses?&nbsp;

Without any self-aggrandisement, let me say that I consider myself an all-rounder, which essentially means that every time I think of buying a new motorcycle, I find myself scratching my head, unable to decide which motorcycle I should go for.&nbsp;

Unfortunately, there isn’t a single motorcycle that’s suitable for all kinds of roads and terrain, while still being a good everyday commuter motorcycle. Even crossover motorcycles don’t really offer the total package. There are, however, bikes that are good for a specific purpose and can still be used as everyday commuters. For instance, the Apache RTR 200 and the Xpulse.

The Apache 200 is a wonderful sports urban motorcycle. You can ride it to work every day, take it to a track if you so desire, and maybe even use it for occasional touring. The Xpulse, on the other hand, is a great urban Enduro motorcycle that can take on rough Indian roads, and you can also have some amazing off-road fun with it.&nbsp;

The reason I’ve chosen these bikes is that both of them are the best at what they do. The Apache RTR 200 4V was crowned the Indian Motorcycle of the Year in 2017, while the XPulse won the same title in 2020. So, I think it makes perfect sense to do this offbeat cross-segment comparison for those who are looking to by a motorcycle that can suit almost all kinds of riding styles.

On Paper 
On paper, both the XPulse and the Apache 200 are similar in terms of their engines. The BS6 Apache, which we have here, is powered by a 197.75-cc single-cylinder unit, which generates 20bhp and 16.8Nm of peak torque. The new BS6 Xpulse gets a 199.6cc single-cylinder engine, which produces 18bhp and 16.45Nm. We couldn’t get our hands on the BS6 Xpulse model for this comparison, which means that we had to make do with the BS4 variant, which offers a bit more power than its BS6 counterpart.&nbsp;

Both bikes get fuel-injection as standard and 5-speed gearboxes. The Apache is slightly more expensive, at ₹1.29 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), while the Xpulse is priced at ₹1.12 lakh (ex-showroom). Both bikes also get ABS as standard. Engine specs aside, both bikes have completely different ride dynamics.

Sporty Commuter 
The Apache, in my opinion, is simply the best 200cc motorcycle in the market. The 200cc segment is mostly filled with sports commuters, such as the Duke 200 and Pulsar 200. The Apache is superbly built and gets the best quality components. Also, it gets features such as Bluetooth connectivity and a slipper clutch. The new BS6 model feels outstanding on the road. I managed to do a 500-kilometre road trip in a single day, without any problems. In other words, I had a wonderful time with the bike.&nbsp;

In the city, it’s very comfortable, and its sporty and aggressive riding posture isn’t tiring at all – in fact, it feels very good. Some of the biggest highlights of the Apache include its engine and handling capabilities. The engine is the smoothest you can find in the 200cc segment, and the throttle response is quick and exciting. Even a slight flick of the wrist can make the bike pull forward very quickly. It won’t take more than a few kilometres on the Apache for you to realize and appreciate the amazing chassis of this bike.&nbsp;

With the clip-on handlebars, you get a nice feel from the front-end during cornering. It inspires plenty of confidence, and you enjoy the true sporty nature of this machine. The bike stays firmly planted on the road, as you manoeuvre through city traffic and on the highway with a smile on your face. It really is that good!&nbsp;

The engine and handling are so impressive that you can even take it to a racetrack for some serious fun. Even on nice twisty mountain roads, it handles superbly. As a highway tourer, it’s not bad either. You can easily cruise for hours at three-digit speeds. As a city bike, it makes perfect sense – its suspension is set up very well to handle bumpy roads.

Enduro Commuter 
What stands out about the Xpulse is its enduro appeal. It’s a very tall bike, with a high seat, which means that, on the road, you’ll seem to tower over everybody else. The Xpulse has also got a fantastic chassis, but it’s built to take on rough roads instead of tight corners. The suspension is perfect for bad roads. Also, it can be a relaxing and easy-going commuter. In small towns, it is surely a more practical option. With high handlebars and mid-mounted controls, you can easily stand up on the bike.&nbsp;

The bike is simply brilliant at lower speeds, but once you cross the 100km/h mark, it doesn’t quite feel so good. Even the initial acceleration feels lazy, but, still, the throttle response is quite good in the city and good enough on off-road trails. The Xpulse doesn’t have the smooth and buttery feel of the Apache RTR 200, but it’s certainly not rough as well. If you aren’t fond of sporty riding, then the Xpulse is the best bike you can get in the 200cc segment. In fact, the Xpulse is the only enduro-style bike in the 200cc segment, which makes it unique.&nbsp;

Decision Time 
Those riders who enjoy aggressive and sporty riding will definitely go for the Apache, while off-road dirt-bike enthusiasts will opt for the Xpulse. People like me, however, who like both might just lean towards the Apache, for it has a lot more to offer. The Apache’s engine performance, handling, practicality, features, and build quality are far superior to the Xpulse. True, it’s more expensive, but only by about ₹17,000. Keeping that in mind, the Apache appears to be the better all-rounder.&nbsp;

The Xpulse is more of a niche product. So, if you’re confused between the two, my recommendation would be the Apache RTR 200. However, if you can spend an extra ₹38,000, you can get the Rally Kit for the Xpulse, which considerably boosts the X-factor of the Xpulse – making it more desirable, so-much-so that I might even consider it over the Apache. &nbsp;

And this means that all new cars and bikes sold in our country will have to meet these norms before that deadline.&nbsp;

Now, while there are still a couple of months to the deadline, some auto manufacturers have already started putting their products under the knife. One of the early adopters of BS-VI is TVS Motors – the company recently upgraded its popular Apache RTR 4V series, the 160 and 200, to meet the new norms. 
Just to make this whole process a little more interesting, TVS Motors has also added a couple of new features into the mix. A couple of days after the launch of these two bikes, the company invited us to its test-track at the Hosur plant to sample them.&nbsp;

The question is this – has the transition from BS-IV to BS-VI made any difference to the RTR series?&nbsp;

Face Forward 
We tested the Apache RTR 160 4V BS-VI first, so here it is. On the face of it, nothing has changed. However, the most noticeable change is, ahem, its face – the 160 4V now comes with a full-LED headlamp setup and a new bikini fairing, which looks quite modern and premium.&nbsp;

It also gets some new racing stickers and a chequered flag plastered here and there. On the whole, the design, equipment, and mechanical underpinnings remain unchanged. The bike also retains the quality and fit-and-finish of the old bike – so, in other words, it’s very, very good.

With the BS-VI update, the RTR 160 4V will only be available with fuel injection, which is kind of obvious. Having said that, the new BS-VI compliant single-cylinder 159.7cc motor feels more or less identical to the BS-IV version.&nbsp;

However, it does have a few differences. For instance, the throttle response is crisper now. The refinement levels are also superb, and it’s only when you cross 7,000rpm that you notice vibrations through the handlebar.&nbsp;

The torque spread is linear, and it offers great day-to-day driveability – just like the old version. As for the drop in performance, it’s so minimal that it’s inconsequential and virtually unnoticeable. To be honest, I couldn’t really feel anything during the test drive.

In terms of ride and handling, the BS-VI version is as good as the old bike, which means that it continues to be blessed with superb balance. The suspension is tuned for comfort, but if you turn up the wick, you’ll notice it’s a very friendly and enjoyable bike to throw around corners.&nbsp;

The rear suspension does, however, feel too soft. When I pushed hard around corners, the rear wheel moved and bobbed about a lot. Also, the front brake lever could have done with more feel and feedback, but that’s nothing new – this was true for the old bike as well.

Bigger is better 
After the 160, it was time to ride the BS-VI version of the RTR 200 4V. But, before we talk about our first impressions of the 2020 bike, let’s make something very clear. You see, the RTR 200 is one of our favourite bikes in its segment simply because it’s a great all-rounder – a fun bike, and a very well-engineered product.&nbsp;

In short, it’s already a sort of perfect package. And still, somehow TVS has managed to improve it even further in this new version, or so they claim.

First up, like the 160, the 200 too gets a new face, featuring all-LED headlamps. Personally, I think the RTR 200 now looks even meaner and beefier with that new front cowl – a great addition, I must say.&nbsp;

Apart from that, the 200 is now equipped with TVS’ Smart Connect Bluetooth connectivity, which means that you can use features like onboard navigation and check race telemetry, as well as lean-angles. All of these, and more, can be accessed via a smartphone app. I tested this feature during the test-ride, and it’s quite effective and, might I add, very cool.

Additionally, the RTR 200 now comes shod with a new Eurogrip radial rear tyre, while the front tyre is the same TVS Remora as that of the old bike. The Pirellis are no longer available, even as an option.&nbsp;

The 2020 RTR 200, as well as the smaller 160 4V, now get a function called ‘Glide Through Traffic’ or GTT. What this essentially does is that it allows you to easily navigate through dense traffic. You don’t have to use the accelerator to move from a standstill – simply releasing the clutch allows the bike to accelerate at a speed of up to 7km/h. Since the system is regulated keeping speed in mind and not torque, it works with a pillion and even&nbsp; 
on gradients.

The BS-VI engine produces slightly less torque than before – 16.8Nm as opposed to 18.1Nm – but the power output, at 20.2bhp, is nearly identical to the outgoing version. However, the torque deficit isn’t really apparent. Performance-wise, I barely noticed any difference at all.&nbsp;

On the upside, the throttle response is much smoother now. The engine loves to be revved hard and has a very strong mid-range, which is its main highlight. Above 8,000rpm, it does tend to run out of steam and the vibrations creep back in, but, overall, it remains a very enjoyable powertrain. Not to mention the fact that the five-speed gearbox, along with a slipper clutch, makes the whole exercise even more effortless.

In terms of ride and handling, well, on the track I could only focus on the latter, and I’m happy to report that the RTR 200 is still a hoot to ride! Of course, riding the 200 after the RTR 160 made it feel nimbler, tauter, and more planted, given the fact that it’s inclined more towards performance than comfort or fuel economy. As a consequence, it’s a lot more exciting.&nbsp;

This is also thanks to its brilliant chassis and finely calibrated suspension. The RTR 200 is as flickable as ever, and the feel and feedback from the chassis inspires enormous confidence while riding. And the new Eurogrip radial tyres hold up well surprisingly.&nbsp;

During the test ride, I didn’t really miss the Pirelli at all. The front brake, however, still feels spongy and tends to fade when you slam it hard – something that TVS really needs to work on. On all other fronts, though, the RTR 200 – even with the BS-VI update – is still one of the very best and most exciting 200cc bikes out there.

Verdict

Long story short, both the <a href="https://www.autox.com/gallery/2020-tvs-apache-rtr-200-4v-bs-vi-apache-rtr-160-4v-bs-vi-photos-106964/"> RTR 200 and RTR 160</a> feel more or less the same as before in their BS-VI avatars. However, their prices have gone up significantly, especially that of the RTR 200, which is now ₹10,000 dearer than the BS-IV version.&nbsp;

That said, you do get more for the extra money you pay. So, it’s not unlikely that these two will continue to be the most sought-after bikes in their respective segments.&nbsp;
