<p>What you see on the cover of November 2024 of the <em><a href="https://www.autox.com/magazine/" target="_blank">autoX Magazine</a></em> is a glimpse of our annual mega-test. Other than merely whittling this list of 50-odd vehicles down to the top-ten machines launched in the past year, what our annual mega test enables us to do is put our ear to the ground and get a real sense of which direction the winds are blowing in. <p>Spoiler alert – there are two Chinese EVs in our top-five cars of 2024. And the reason for that is very clear – they really are that good, and they really do provide class-leading value. That China is a powerhouse in EVs is not a new phenomenon, but just how much of a powerhouse is worth considering. How about the fact that 70% of the world’s EVs are made in China? Or consider the fact that <a href="https://www.autox.com/opinion/dhruv-behl/of-the-340-registered-ev-makers-in-china-only-one-is-profitable-byd-116457/" target="_blank">there are almost 350 registered EV makers in China. But only one of them is profitable</a> – BYD! And, yes, one of the two EVs in our top-five is a BYD.</p><iframe width="400" height="345" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QZ3yIvrZnSA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>

<p><br>In Q4 of 2023, BYD overtook Tesla to become the largest EV manufacturer in the world. And in Q3 of 2024, BYD overtook Tesla in revenue for the first time. After all, BYD is the only truly vertically integrated EV manufacturer in the world today – producing its own batteries, motors, and chips. In fact, its proprietary blade batteries are perhaps the most advanced and safest battery packs around – so much so that even Tesla sources batteries for its Model Y from BYD.</p>

<p>Elon Musk did warn the world that it wouldn’t be the establishment that would pose a threat to his EV supremacy, but the real threat would come from China. That the traditional automakers are floundering is also not a revelation.</p>

<p>VW has spent the past several years developing its own EVs, but they’re simply not on par with the Chinese competition. So, VW is adopting Chinese EV platforms for its next generation of EVs – at least in China to start with. In the meantime, the German giant is planning to close three plants in its home market. Porsche, meanwhile, is talking about giving its new EV platforms ICE powertrains because of how dismal their EV sales have been of late. Across the pond, in the US, Ford is losing money on every EV sold and doesn’t expect to make a profit till 2027. The CEO of Ford, Jim Farley, even admitted to a Xiaomi SU7 being his current daily driver – presumably his way of checking out the competition. You know the world order has changed when the CEO of the car company that invented the assembly line is dailying a car made by a Chinese cell phone manufacturer.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, closer to home, the thaw at our Northern border may mean Chinese EV investment, which has been on ice in India thus far, may be a little closer to getting the green light. Politics aside, if the BYD Seal and MG Windsor are anything to go by, the emergence of the Chinese EV means that Indian car buyers are getting an up close and personal look at what Jim Farley and his colleagues have found – that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to compete with Chinese EVs.</p>


The Chinese EVs That Have Been a Long Time Coming… Well, They’re Here!

<p>With a strong emphasis on track performance, the Chinese manufacturer&nbsp;Xiaomi's first <a href="https://www.autox.com/electric-cars/">electric vehicle</a> will&nbsp;receive a new flagship&nbsp;variant.&nbsp;The SU7 Ultra,&nbsp;revealed&nbsp;as a pre-production prototype, has been given&nbsp;a lot of upgrades over the standard SU7 to&nbsp;achieve the fastest&nbsp;lap time at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.&nbsp;Xiaomi states&nbsp;the car&nbsp;can go&nbsp;from 0 to 100km/h in 1.97 seconds, reaching 200km/h in 5.96 seconds. Furthermore, a&nbsp;0 to 300km/h sprint takes 15.07 seconds and the&nbsp;top speed&nbsp;stands at&nbsp;350km/h.&nbsp;According to the company, the production model is expected to make its way to&nbsp;the renowned&nbsp;circuit sometime in 2025, with the prototype marking&nbsp;its track debut in October this year.</p>

<h2>Xiaomi SU7 Ultra: Appearance</h2>

<p>The Ultra Prototype has a significant aero overhaul compared to the regular SU7. The front fenders have also been altered, and the new bumper has a noticeable front splitter and reworked air vents. A huge rear diffuser, aggressive side skirt, and oversized rear wing complete the appearance. The bonnet has twin exhaust vents to expel any trapped air. Xiaomi claims that the SU7 Ultra generates 2,145 kg of downforce thanks to its extreme aerodynamics. Furthermore, Xiaomi claims that to reduce XU7 Ultra's weight, carbon fibre components replace all the body panels seen&nbsp;on the standard&nbsp;SU7. According to the manufacturer, the SU7 Ultra prototype weighs 1,900 kg, over&nbsp;300 kg less&nbsp;than the Taycan Turbo S with the Weissach Package.</p>

<h2>Xiaomi SU7 Ultra: Technical Details</h2>

<p>The new "V8s" electric motors from Xiaomi, which have a combined 570bhp, are fitted to the SU7 Ultra. Besides that, it has the "V6s" unit (387bhp) on the front. At a noteworthy 1,527bhp, the system's total power puts the Ultra&nbsp;above the&nbsp;likes of the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, Tesla Model S Plaid, and Lucid Air Sapphire.</p>

<p>The new battery for the SU7 Ultra was co-developed by Xiaomi and CATL. According to reports, the pack can be fully charged in less than 12 minutes and is intended for racing use. The battery pack can supply 1,330 kW of energy to all three electric motors and more than 880 kW even when the battery is only 20% charged thanks to its advanced 897-volt architecture.</p>

<h2>Xiaomi SU7 Ultra: Braking Duties</h2>

<p>Xiaomi, the Chinese Smartphone maker, launched the&nbsp;SU7 electric sedan in the home country in March 2024&nbsp;and,&nbsp;fast forward to the present day, Xiaomi&nbsp;has&nbsp;showcased the sedan at an event held to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary in India. Having said that,&nbsp;Xiaomi says that the SU7 is not going to be launched in the country in the near future.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Overseas, the&nbsp;Xiaomi SU7 is offered in three variants&nbsp;–&nbsp;SU7, SU7 Pro, and SU7 Max. The variant showcased here was the SU7 Max,&nbsp;the performance-oriented version of the electric sedan. It gets a dual motor, all-wheel-drive setup, which produces 664bhp and 838Nm of peak torque (combined output numbers). This setup, offered by Xiaomi in the SU7, ensures that the&nbsp;sedan accelerates from a standstill to 100km/h in 2.78 seconds (with launch control) before hitting a top speed of 265km/h. The Chinese tech giant's e-car has a straightforward interior with a dual-tone paint job and a compact centre console with tactile buttons. The pictures show a sizable multimedia panel in the middle that the driver may use to simultaneously operate music apps, navigation, and car-related information. <p>Through the development of CTB (Cell-to-Body) technology, the company has improved the structural rigidity of the model and enhanced&nbsp;interior space by embedding the battery within the car. There will be two versions available for the SU7: a 73.6kWh base model and a 101kWh top-spec one. The car's maximum speed will be 210km/h for the base model and 265km/h for the more powerful version. Its power output will range from 295nhp to 369bhp. On a single charge, the SU7 can travel up to 800 kilometres.</p>

<p>Before the upcoming debut in April, the first interior photos of the Xiaomi SU7 generates&nbsp;a lot of buzz in the global EV market. Although it's too early to comment, industry reports indicate that the Xiaomi SU7 can become a major participant in the market with its notable features.</p>

<h2>Xiaomi SU7: Powertrain</h2>

<p>The Xiaomi SU7 is powered by the 'Super Motor V6S', reaching 21,000rpm and delivering 295bhp with 400Nm of torque. The single-motor version can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 5.28 seconds, reaching a top speed of 210km/h.</p>

<p>By utilising cell-to-body integration, the car's battery architecture becomes an integral part of the vehicle, which allows for more interior space. The base SU7 model has a 73.6 kWh pack and an architecture of 400 volts, while the top-of-the-line SU7 Max has an 800-volt architecture and a 101 kWh pack.</p>

<p>With a maximum range of 800km (CLTC), the SU7 Max outshines the entry-level SU7, which has a range of up to 668km.&nbsp;The SU7 Max can be charged to 510 km in fifteen minutes using an ultra-fast charger and 220 km in five minutes using a standard charger.</p>

<p>The SU7's design is similar to that of the Tesla Model 3, Xiaomi's market rival. <p>While the specifics regarding its interior are not out, expect the SU7 to feature a 3-spoke steering wheel, dual displays for infotainment and instrumentation, autonomous driving technology, etc. Besides, the SU7 will run on in-house&nbsp;HyperOS that powers&nbsp;both smartphones and cars.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Underneath the skin, the&nbsp;Xiaomi SU7 gets two powertrain setups:&nbsp;a&nbsp;rear-wheel-drive system with 295bhp and an all-wheel-drive setup with 664bhp. There will be two battery packs on offer –&nbsp;a BYD-sourced LFP (lithium-ion phosphate) Blade battery on base variants and an expensive&nbsp;NMC (ternary) type battery pack on top-spec variants. The company has yet to reveal the battery specifications.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lower-spec trims with RWD claim a top speed of 210km/h, while the range-topping model with AWD has a claimed top speed of 265km/h.&nbsp;</p>
