As the World Superbike Championship kicked off its first day of testing in Portimao, MotoGP fans were treated to the presence of numerous famous riders, including the legendary Valentino Rossi, who rode a Yamaha R1. Before his retirement in 2021, the Japanese company had given Rossi this fearsome machine. Though he is famous for his fast lap times, Rossi only managed 30th place on Monday with a timing of 1:44.703 behind leader Nicolo Bulega's lightning-fast 1:39.913.

Numerous members of the VR46 Academy, including Franco Morbidelli, Fabio di Giannantonio, Celestino Vietti, Luca Marini, and Marco Bezzecchi, were present in the Portuguese testing grounds as well. The testing sessions were made much more exciting by these riders, who were vying for important track time on sportbikes designed for track days.

<h2>MotoGP: Yamaha and Rossi</h2>

In the grand scheme of things, Yamaha is struggling in MotoGP despite having been a dominant force in the past. Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing, is responsible for improving the team's results. Yamaha seems interested in Rossi's VR46 squad and wants to make it their satellite team, according to persistent rumours. Yamaha places a high value on building trust with their satellite teams since it shows their commitment to the company's future.&nbsp;

Fabio Quartararo, the 2021 MotoGP champion, has a contract that is about to expire at the end of the season. If Yamaha doesn't improve their bike from last year, they risk losing him. The company is hard at work improving its MotoGP bike for the next season, hoping for major upgrades but knowing it won't be a complete overhaul. Making steady progress and making the most of the available concessions are the main targets for the Japanese manufacturer.

There are fresh opportunities for Quartararo according to the recently announced concession regulations. He can now take part in the Sepang shakedown in February 2024, which will offer three further tests. The new rules have made it possible for Yamaha to test and improve engines throughout the season without interference. Not satisfied with the results from in Valencia test, Quartararo voiced his unhappiness.

Valentino Rossi, the VR46 boss and nine-time World Champion, demonstrated his enduring passion for two-wheel mastery by skillfully riding his iconic Yamaha R1.

The key reason for the Suzuki GSX-S1000R being pulled off the market is due to the emission norms.

<a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/suzuki/">Suzuki</a> has officially confirmed that the GSX-R1000 will no longer be sold in the Japanese and European markets. The famous GSX-R1000, adored&nbsp;by many motorcyclists all over the world, can be considered a cultural milestone in the motorcycling industry, comparable to iconic models like the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/kawasaki/ninja-1000/">Kawasaki Ninja</a>&nbsp;and Honda Fireblade.

Suzuki's decision to completely cease its racing efforts and the discontinuation of the GSX-R1000 are clear indications that the company intends to focus on other non-performance-oriented initiatives for the time being. However, Suzuki's litre-class supersport will still be offered in its current form in a limited number of markets, including North America and the Philippines, although these markets can also await the bike's&nbsp;discontinuation.

The key reason for the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/suzuki/gsx-s1000/">GSX-S1000R</a> being pulled off the market is due to the emission norms. The <a href="https://www.autox.com/1000cc-bikes-in-india/">999cc </a>inline-four litre engine is incapable of meeting Japan's and some other regions' stringent emission standards. Meanwhile,&nbsp;the Japanese manufacturer is said to be working on the next-gen&nbsp;GSX-S1000R, which will also feature an all-new engine.&nbsp;According to rumours, this engine could borrow a lot of technology from their MotoGP bikes. It's a different story, though, that Suzuki has also pulled out of MotoGP in 2023.

There is a lot of anticipation around the&nbsp;launch of this new engine, nonetheless.&nbsp;If you remember, Suzuki had also&nbsp;discontinued the previous generation <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/suzuki/hayabusa/">Hayabusa</a>, years before the arrival of the new model, so,&nbsp;there is a good chance&nbsp;that the next GSX-S1000R will follow&nbsp;the same strategy.

Suzuki pulls the plug on the GSX-S1000R in Japan and Europe

Suzuki has announced the decision to stop selling the famed GSX-S1000R in both the European and Japanese markets. The primary reason that the GSX-S1000R is being taken off the market is because of the emission standards.

Updates on the new Yamaha YZF-R1 include a new quick-shifter and a tweaked Lift Control System.&nbsp;

That the Yamaha YZF-R1 is an iconic motorcycle is something that needs not to be reminded time and again. Ever since its launch way back in 1998, the R1 has always had a cult following and its popularity among enthusiasts has only grown over the years. In its current generation, which was launched in 2015, the Yamaha R1 got a step closer to the company’s MotoGP operations since the bike borrowed&nbsp;many parts from the racing prototype. And while the 2015-spec model&nbsp;is still one of the very best litre-class motorcycles out there, Yamaha decided to give it a few updates for MY2018 anyway. The updated motorcycle made its debut at the 2017 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan roughly a month ago, and now it’s arrived on our shores as well. Yamaha has launched the 2018 YZF-R1 in India at Rs 20.73 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). &nbsp;

Although Yamaha India says it’s an “all-new” model, not much has changed. And that’s understood because the current-gen motorcycle has little&nbsp;scope for any improvements&nbsp;– it’s already packed with all the goodies that you can think of. Still, the updated motorcycle gets some minor but significant additions. The first is the new Quick Shift System that now gets auto-blip for clutchless downshifts. For the uninitiated, the system will automatically rev-match&nbsp;engine speed to the&nbsp;wheel speed on downshifts. Clutchless upshifts at full-throttle continue to be a part of the system. In addition to this, the Lift Control System has also been updated for an aggressive mapping, claims Yamaha.

Apart from the aforementioned updates, the new R1 remains more or less unchanged, which is no bad thing. The powertrain is the same 998cc, cross-plane, inline-4 cylinder engine that develops 197.2bhp @ 13,500rpm and 112.4Nm @ 11,500rpm. Power is transmitted via a six-speed transmission.

Electronic suite on the 2018 R1 will be unchanged from the previous model, meaning it continues to come equipped with a six-axis IMU, banking sensitive traction and slide control, banking sensitive racing ABS and unified braking system, and a launch control system.

While the updated R1 has arrived here, the more track-focussed R1 M, which features Ohlins racing electronic suspension, carbon-fibre bodywork and data-logging system with GPS, hasn’t returned to the Indian market. That said, the standard R1 will still be able to give stiff competition to the likes of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/bike-news/2020-honda-cbr1000rr-fireblade-spied-106737/">Honda CBR1000RR</a>, Suzuki GSX-R1000, <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/bike-news/2015-bmw-s1000rr-price-announced/">BMW S1000RR</a>, Aprilia RSV4 and Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R.
