Ducati has made a splendid re-entry into the Indian market, and they’ve launched some exciting products – the Scrambler being one of them. But the most recent Ducati is the Monster 821.
First of all, the bike looks insanely beautiful. It’s definitely the best looking bike we’ve seen launched in India this year – it came closest to scoring a perfect 10 in design! The seating position is also really good, as it’s a more upright setup. Plus, the seat is really comfortable. It’s perfect for city riding, as well as touring. The overall quality of the bike is also fantastic, just like all other Ducati bikes.
Following in the footsteps of its larger 1,200cc sibling, the Monster 821 gets a liquid cooled engine – which is perfect for India. The 821.1cc, 112-horsepower Testastretta 11 is lively and sounds like a beast – it’s got a deep growl just like you would imagine a real life monster would have. There are also different riding modes that you can toggle through, but we rode it mostly in Touring – and even then the acceleration was simply mind blowing. There were many occasions when the front-wheel rose up off the ground. The throttle response is immediate, and the bike can race from 0-100 in just 3.3 seconds.
The mid-range power is healthy, while the top-end tapers off as you reach the 11,000rpm limit. But the overall performance is phenomenal.
The bike feels comfortable at all speeds, and the engine is very refined. Even at speeds in excess of 200km/h the bike is calm and composed, but you need to hold on extra tight and grip the fuel tank with your thighs because of the upright riding position. The bike feels nimble through traffic, and it’s easy to ride on crowded city streets. Once the roads open up it’s just so much fun to ride that you never want to get off the bike. It’s a very capable machine, and it’s impervious to all riding conditions. It was also the 3rd fastest around the track – just a tenth-of-a-second behind the Suzuki GSX-S1000, which goes to show just how awesome the Monster really is.
The bike scored very well, but unfortunately its high price tag hurt its rating. Nevertheless, if you can shell out the extra dough you will not be disappointed with the Monster 821. In fact, if you do decide to buy this real-life Monster, we can guarantee that it’ll be a decision that you certainly won’t regret.
