The electric wave is really catching on. So far, Hero Electric and Okinawa were the only two-wheeler manufacturers selling electric scooters. Now, another homegrown manufacturer is about to enter the scene - Ather Energy. The company has been working on an electric scooter, code named S340 for the last few years and they are now set to launch it tomorrow. Christened simply 340, it is claimed to be the first smart electric scooter in India. The company started developing the scooter in 2014 and wanted it to change the way electric scooter are perceived in India.
Ather energy was established in 2013 by Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain. The duo started the company wanting to develop batteries for electric vehicles but eventually expanded to developing electric two-wheelers. With the promise that the company showed, it managed to get hefty funding from Hero MotoCorp and Flipkart founders Sachin and Binny Bansal.
Ather Energy will also be establishing what they call as 'Ather Grid' - a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The company will establish 13 of these across Bengaluru to start with, eventually expanding to 30 by the end of June. They will also start setting up charging stations in our cities soon. Interestingly, the Bengaluru-based firm has announced that any electric vehicle user can use these charging stations for free for the first six months.
Details of the Ather Energy 340 are still few and far. We will get more information when the scooter gets launched tomorrow. Stay tuned.
