BMW Z4 Overview
Sure, SUVs are keeping the mainstream vehicles afloat, but there’s simply nothing else that comes close to endow the ‘wind-in-the-hair-feeling’ going down a coast. Initially rolled out in the market in 2007, the BMW Z4 has always been an eye-catcher, especially with the elegant long bonnet and squeezed rear design. These might not be as practical as your overweight SUV, but then again, convertibles are fast, lithe, and much more desirable.
The all-new 2019 Z4 uses BMW’s Cluster Architecture (CLAR) and, for the price, BMW Z4 sports a multitude of changes, with the most important change being the use of a soft fabric top instead of a hardtop. Compared to the Z4 which we last saw in 2016, the 2019 model is as fresh and modern as it gets.
BMW Z4 Exterior
The Z4 evolved along with Toyota’s iconic sportscar, the Supra, and it now carries an exceptional design. Unlike many new BMWs, the kidney nostrils here are adequately sized, the sharp and angular smoked headlamps are brimmed with LEDs, and the broad haunches lend a sense of masculinity.
The profile is typical roadster affair too, replete with a stretched-out nose, short rear stance, and massive M Sport alloy wheels. The rear-end, on the other hand, looks a bit chunky in comparison to the front-end and profile. Nevertheless, the wraparound LED taillamps gel well and are a cool addition.
BMW Z4 Variants
The BMW Z4 variants, namely, are sDrive 20i and M40i. As indicated above, it features Adaptive LED headlamp with variable light control at the front. While the base-spec trim gets 17-inch V-spoke alloy wheels, the M Sport trim gets 18-inch alloy wheels. The wraparound taillamps, on the other hand, are standard across the range.
Moreover, it gets a 10.25-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple Carplay support, BMW Live Cockpit display for instrumentation, dual-zone climate control, multi-functional steering wheel, and much more. Some optional features include a 12-speaker 408W Harman Kardon hi-fi audio system, wireless mobile charging, auto-parking, and a head-up display.
BMW Z4 Interior
Like the new BMWs, here too, you get twin displays, one of which serves as the instrument cluster while the other 10.25-inch display functions as the company’s iDrive infotainment system. It also gets sporty Alcantara leather bucket seats, which are very supportive, cup holders in the centre console, ambient lighting and dual-zone climate control. The quality of the interior is nothing short of impressive. The soft-top of the Z4 is electrically operated and works with the press of a dedicated button, which then takes around 10 seconds to open or close.
BMW Z4 Engine Specifications & Performance
Under the hood, the BMW Z4 new model comes with two petrol engines. The base-spec variant of the Z4 packs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol, which is capable of making 194bhp and 320Nm of torque. It comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox as a standard fit.
For the enthusiasts, the M Sport variant of the Z4 features a 3.0-litre inline-six gasoline engine, which is good for 335bhp and 500Nm of torque. It, too, comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Both the engines are also compliant with the stringent BS-VI emission standards.
