<p>The 2024-25 Formula E season is less than three weeks away from commencing, and India’s best hope in the Formula E World Championship, Jehan Daruvala, confirms that he won’t be a part of Season 11 of the all-electric racing series.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For those following Jehan’s Motorsport career, the news isn’t a surprise. After all, Jehan wasn’t a part of the pre-season testing either. However, there is more to Jehan’s journey which I try to uncover in this conversation, specifically his ability to deal with the uncertainty that the world of Motorsport often throws at professional race drivers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For autoX, Jehan and I reflect on his debut season in Formula E&nbsp;Season 10, and what his Motorsport future holds given that he faces a 'break' in his racing career for the first time ever since he started racing in 2009-10.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Debut with Maserati</h2>

<p>Jehan had to choose between two teams for his debut in Formula E - Maserati and Mahindra. At the Berlin ePrix last year, Jehan participated in the 'rookie test' with Mahindra, the team he was a test and reserve driver for and followed it up with a Free Practice appearance in Rome. However, he chose to make his debut with Maserati, a more competitive option of the two.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In his 16 races with Maserati, Jehan scored points on two occasions - in Misano and in Berlin. In qualifying, Jehan impressed in only his third session in Formula E by making it to the duels round at Diriyah. He ended the season in 21st place (out of 28 drivers) with 8 points, in comparison to his much experienced team-mate Maximilian Guenther (6 seasons in Formula E) who scored 73 points and was ranked 8th in the World Championship.</p>

<p>Reflecting on his debut season, Jehan says, 'I think the season looked a bit worse from the outside than it did from the inside. I genuinely believe that my qualifying pace improved towards the end of the year. There were a lot of races I could have scored a handful of points in, but I had incidents - some of them out of my control.'</p>

<p>'The level of Formula E drivers is as high as Formula 1, and to race in Formula E as a rookie, especially in almost equal machinery, is challenging. I think I managed to do that consistently in my debut season even though we didn’t score as many points as we should have,' he continues.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Enjoying Formula E</h2>

<p>Formula E was the first series where Jehan raced against established and veteran racers. In the feeder series (Formula 3 and Formula 2) that are a part of the Formula 1 ladder, and where Jehan raced for 7 years, the grid is filled with rookie and junior drivers learning their craft. In contrast, the Formula E grid is filled with a mix of World Champions, race winners and podium finishers across some of the toughest racing series such as Formula E and World Endurance Championships.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jehan says, 'I really enjoyed myself. Obviously, it was not an easy season. But even being sometimes in the top eight or top 10, it felt good. Just competing with these guys, on paper, is probably the hardest line-up of softs. Every single driver performed at a very high level, and that’s what makes Formula E so interesting. For me, as a driver, it was fun to compete - every tenth mattered!'</p>

<h2>Parting Ways with Maserati</h2>

<p>Before the final race of the season in London, Jehan already knew that he and the team would part ways after his debut season concluded. He had signed a one year contract with Maserati that included a possibility of extension - a clause that is usually performance dependent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Explaining his chat with Maserati on parting ways for Season 11, Jehan says, 'We didn’t get into the key reasons about what and why the season turned out the way it did. We kept it professional, and that’s about it. Although, I did feel that I deserved a second season as there were a lot of races I could have scored a handful of points in.'&nbsp;</p>

<p>'Generally, I believe the right amount of time is needed to succeed in Formula E - most drivers found it difficult as rookies, and they had more seasons in the series. Of course, I am working hard to secure another opportunity to prove myself - keeping my fingers crossed!' confesses Jehan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Case in point, Jehan’s Maserati team-mate Maximilian Guenther scored in just two races in his first season to end 17th (20 points) in the Drivers’ standings. Similarly, Dan Ticktum, Jehan’s team-mate from the 2021 Formula 2 season, finished 21st (1 point) in his debut season in Formula E. Guenther will start his 7th season in Formula E later this year, while Tickum will race in his 4th.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>The Present</h2>

<p>Jehan shifted to Europe to pursue his Motorsport dreams at a very young age. That also meant giving up time with the family back home in Mumbai. The current break in his career gives him time to pursue activities he otherwise wouldn’t get time to.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jehan says, 'It is nice to be home with friends and family, especially during the festive time of the year - Parsi New Year, Diwali and even my birthday. For the last 15-odd years, I haven’t had the chance to experience these celebrations at home.'</p>

<p>Further, he confesses, 'Obviously, I miss driving! When you’re not racing, the break feels longer. Honestly, it’s the uncertainty of not knowing what I am going to do next.'&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from his on-track skills, a key trait of Jehan’s that has stood out through his career is his mental strength. During our conversation, Jehan’s composure reflected that mental strength even more when he philosophically says, 'There is uncertainty, yes, but that’s the life of a professional athlete - year to year. I focus on giving my best - with the car and the team, and see where it takes me.'</p>

<p>'That’s how Motorsport is - sometimes you’re not in the best team and you don’t have the best car, you have to accept it. The expectations need to be in control as you go through the ladder</p>

<p>He continues, 'The key thing is to not be negative and just take things as they come - and that’s how I am as a person. I have worked hard for the last 15 years and I will take things as they come and see what the future holds.'</p>

<h2>The Future</h2>

<p>After four seasons in Formula 2 (2020-23), Jehan was certain that his next steps in the world of Motorsport needed to be in a series and with teams that respected his talent rather than the financial package his personal backers offered. This belief will continue to guide Jehan’s future decisions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jehan and I discussed the obvious options - IndyCar, WEC, DTM, and of course a return to Formula E, if the correct opportunity came by.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Mumbai-lad says, 'I would like to continue as a professional racing driver. Beyond a point, there’s no point in continuing to invest and drive. If it is a professional racing series where I can earn a living from, then it’s definitely something I would think of.'</p>

<p>Elaborating on his interest in IndyCar and the WEC, Jehan says, 'I believe that with a good CV in Formula 2, one could get straight into IndyCar (bypassing Indy NXT). However, some form of corporate sponsorship involvement might be required.'&nbsp;</p>

<p>He exclaims, 'Even endurance teams want you to bring sponsors these days, even if you have achieved well in other series. Frankly, it is not easy to raise the kind of sponsorship needed from India, especially to race in America.'&nbsp;</p>

<p>While concluding our chat, it was evident that Jehan’s plans for 2025 were uncertain. What was even more certain was that he was at ease with this uncertainty and wanted to patiently wait for the future to unfold. In the meanwhile, the new sporting sensation paddle has caught Jehan’s fancy, while he’s also taking more interest in his family business.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'Even if I don’t race somewhere in 2025, there’s still a whole year to plan and decide for 2026. This isn’t the end of my racing career!,' he signs off.</p>


Interview: Jehan Daruvala Reflects on a Tough 2024 Formula E Season And  Possible Break from Racing in 2025

In an exclusive interview, Jehan Daruvala reflects on his Formula E Season 10 experience with Maserati MSG Racing and shares insights about his future in motorsport.

<p>Jehan Daruvala’s destination for 2024 was long known. His career pivoted from Formula 1 to Formula E late last year when he was announced as Mahindra Racing’s test and reserve driver for 2023. However, Jehan took the world, especially Indian Motorsport fans, by surprise when he announced that he would be racing for Maserati MSG Racing in 2024 instead.</p>

<p>In the uber-competitive all-electric racing series, Jehan will be the only rookie among a grid of 22 drivers. In an hour long chat for autoX, Jehan tells me why and how Maserati MSG Racing happened over Mahindra Racing - a topic that’s of key interest among his fan base.</p>

<p>He also shares his reasons to not participate in the final Formula 2 round in Abu Dhabi, his preparations and targets for his maiden Formula E season, how he’s settling in with Maserati MSG Racing (MMR) and more.</p>

<h2>Mahindra Racing</h2>

<p>Based on my understanding and conversations, Jehan’s relationship with Mahindra Racing (MR) was going to convert to a full-time race seat in 2024. In fact, a mid-season opportunity with MR arose when the team prematurely parted ways with Oliver Rowland with 4 rounds to spare.</p>

<p>Interestingly at the time, Jehan chose to focus on Formula 2 despite an opportunity offered by MR to replace Rowland. “At the point Oliver (Rowland) left the team, Jehan wanted to focus on his Formula 2 commitments. With that in mind, we turned to Roberto (Merhi) after an impressive Berlin Rookie Test, and with his strong track record in international motorsport,” confirmed MR’s Team Principal Frederic Bertrand to me for this story.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the conclusion of season in 2023, Mahindra Racing let go of their driver pairing of Oliver Rowland and Lucas di Grassi. For the fans, it became even more obvious that Jehan would fill one of the two available cockpits at Mahindra Racing, fueling their dream of having an “Indian driver racing for an Indian team”.</p>

<p>However, MR chose Edoardo Mortara and former Formula E World Champion Nyck De Vries for 2024, while Jehan signed with MMR. As I understand the driver situation, it wasn’t a case of a simple swap between drivers (Mortara-Jehan) for the two teams.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bertrand explained the team’s decision, “For Season 10 (2024), we took a decision to sign two drivers with Formula E experience. This is crucial for the team, both to develop the current car, but also with one eye on the future in Gen3EVO."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bertrand’s comments are in line with what <a href="https://www.autox.com/formula-e/mahindra-racings-frederic-bertrand-on-jehan-daruvala-the-teams-driver-pool-113468/">he told me at the Berlin ePrix in April earlier in the year on how Mahindra Racing was approaching it’s driver line-up for the seasons to come</a>.</p>

<p>However, it seems that the relationship between Jehan and Mahindra Racing didn’t materialise in the contract stage. Explaining the situation, Jehan says, “Yes, I was at Mahindra Racing so everyone thought I would race for them in 2024. But at the end of the day, we couldn’t reach a mutual understanding.”&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Maserati MSG Racing - How it All Happened</h2>

<p>Jehan signed with the famous Alexander and Julian Jakobi (of GP Sports Management fame) a few seasons ago to manage his racing affairs. He credited the duo for the surprise opportunity with MMR.</p>

<p>“When they told me (about MMR) on the phone, I was like, yes, we have to push for this option. In the end, we had a great deal and an agreement with Maserati MSG Racing. For me, it’s my rookie season in Formula E and to get an opportunity with a team that is a proven race winner and podium scorer is definitely a dream!” says Jehan matter of factly.</p>

<p>He continues, “If you ask any driver, they want to have the opportunity to be in a car that can get results and score points right away. To have this opportunity in my rookie year is rare.”</p>

<p>Maserati MSG Racing formerly competed in Formula E as Venturi Racing (from 2014-22). In 2022-23, the team scored two pole positions, one race win and three podium finishes. As Venturi Racing, the team finished second and third in the Teams’ Championship in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons respectively.</p>

<p>In a short span of his Formula E career, Jehan has already worked with two of the top teams in the series. We discussed some of the similarities and differences between the two and Jehan candid admits, “There will always be some teams that are faster than the others - and that’s how racing is. It’s really hard to compare as they’re both good teams with great facilities and talented people. In the end, it's the fine margins that make a difference. Everyone has different ways of working and at the end of the day, they (Mahindra Racing) didn’t have a competitive car.”</p>

<p>Again, earlier in the year, <a href="https://www.autox.com/interviews/formula-e-team-principal-frederic-bertrand-reveals-three-year-plans-to-resurrect-mahindra-to-the-top-113670/">Frederic Bertrand shared in-depth insights about Mahindra Racing’s struggles in Formula E’s Gen3 era and how he plans to resurrect the team’s fortunes in the coming seasons.</a></p>

<h2>Settling in with Maserati MSG Racing</h2>

<p>Jehan shared that he spent a month in Monaco (MMR is based in Monaco) before the Formula E pre-season test in Valencia visiting the team’s facilities to get acquainted. Since 2021, Jehan has driven for three different teams in Formula 2, participated in Formula 1 tests with McLaren and has worked with two different teams in Formula E.</p>

<p>We identified ‘trust’ as a key factor in succeeding with new teams. Jehan says, “I went cycling with a few engineers and spent some evenings together. Overall, it’s been a good experience. It’s going to be a busy year ahead.”</p>

<p>He further shared that the best way to increase trust between a driver-engineer was by using the tools at their disposal. “You get a better understanding of each other when you work together in the simulator and on-track. Obviously, the folks at MMR haven’t worked with me before, and nor have I worked with them. But the best way to win trust is when my feedback matches what the team is seeing in the data - that correlation is a big trust winner,” explains Jehan.</p>

<p>He continues, “In Formula E, the margins are so small and they make a big difference in the results. We saw that in the pre-season test - one or two tenths could be 10-odd positions higher or lower in the final result. Again, this is where trust plays a role - for example, when my engineer tells me specific settings for a corner, I trust that his advice will help me extract more from the car. This way, we’re able to bring the most out of each other.”</p>

<h2>Formula E - the Challenges, the Targets</h2>

<p>In 2024, Jehan will become only the third Indian to participate in a World Championship single-seater racing series. Undeniably, Formula E is a highly-competitive and unpredictable racing series. In 2022-23, 9 different drivers scored a pole position while 7 different drivers won a race. Of the 11 teams on the grid, 9 teams finished on the podium while 6 of them won races. The challenge of Formula E is very high and different from what Jehan has previously experienced in his single-seater career.</p>

<p>Understandably, Jehan’s core focus in the coming months is on Formula E. He decided to not participate in the final Formula 2 race in Abu Dhabi in November. “My main reason to not race in Abu Dhabi is because I want to focus entirely on being ready for my rookie season in Formula E,” shares the 4 times Formula 2 race winner.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jehan also highlighted that he hadn’t raced against many of the current Formula E drivers. He says, “A lot of them are well-established drivers in Formula E - former championships and even drivers who succeeded in Formula 1 in the past. I don’t know where I would put myself among these guys. I’m the only rookie driver next year.”</p>

<p>“I’m really looking forward to my rookie season. It’s going to be a different challenge. We already know that Formula E has highly competitive teams and drivers. I expect the season to be full of learning and in many ways, I am quietly confident that I can do well,” says a confident Jehan.</p>

<p>Over the years, the one key standout of my conversations with Jehan has been the ease with which we have managed to dig deeper into his racing mindset. And of course, Jehan’s unique ability to give simple and straightforward answers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jehan says, while explaining his personal targets for 2024, “I don’t have targets in terms of absolute numbers. The main goal is to learn as much as I can and as quickly as I can. I have to prove myself in Formula E. My goal is to have a future in Formula E, so at the end of the day, the results matter.”</p>

<p>“If I don’t get good results, it’s obvious that the team won't keep me. I have this at the back of my mind and so the goal is to do well enough where I build a base for myself to have a future in Formula E. I know I’m a quick driver, but there’s more to Formula E than being quick, so only time will tell,” he says. &nbsp;</p>

<h2>New and different in Formula E for Jehan</h2>

<p>2024 will be a step into the new and the unknown for Jehan. Apart from a new car altogether, he will compete against a relatively new set of drivers, race on new tracks and compete in a new format of qualifying. And of course, I quizzed Jehan about how different would ‘race management’ in Formula E be to the other series.</p>

<p>“The key in Formula E is to be able to manage everything during the races,” explains Jehan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He continues, “It sounds simple, but it isn't. Everyone has a certain amount of energy with which they need to start and end the race with. You need to get from start to finish as quickly as possible but also fight 10-15 cars in the process. The fun part will be fighting with other cars - sometimes going three or four abreast into one corner. But it’s also harder to manage energy in such racing situations. We’ve done a lot of work together behind the scenes, a lot of laps in the simulator - and we’ve done a lot of race simulations to get me up to speed as quickly as possible.”</p>

<p>Apart from being powered by an electric motor, the technology used in a Formula E car is different and far more evolved than what Jehan is used to. For starters, he would have more tools to play with in the car itself. “Formula E is a completely different environment to Formula 2 - the level of engineering, the amount of data the teams gather and the simulations we go through. It’s a lot more than what I have experienced in Formula 2 where we literally have nothing apart from brake bias to help us in the car,” explains Jehan.</p>

<p>A frank Jehan continues, “I’m super impressed with the amount of technology used in Formula E - the little adjustments and changes one can make while driving. This makes a huge difference to the balance of the car.”</p>

<p>Formula E’s revamped qualifying system is another change that Jehan will have to get used to. The all-electric series added a twist to their group-based knock-out qualifying format by introducing head-to-head duels between drivers. “Honestly, it’s a pretty good format. The main goal is to get through to the duels stage because then you are guaranteed a top-7 finish in qualifying. Frankly, it will be about thinking about the lap time in the moment before thinking far off ahead into the session,” explains Jehan.</p>

<p>The bigger challenge Jehan will face is the limited on-track time at each race event. Formula E has two Free Practice sessions of 30 mins each before Qualifying. “You don’t have that many push laps before Qualifying,” confesses Jehan while emphasising his work with MMR in the simulator to sort out his racing lines and references, “It’s super fun, and critical.”</p>

<h2>Hyderabad ePrix - History in the&nbsp;Making?</h2>

<p>After nearly 14 years of racing, Jehan will finally have the chance to ‘race at home in India’ at next year’s Hyderabad ePrix. If this year’s race in Hyderabad is anything to go by, Jehan will definitely be the most-popular racing driver in the paddock. And remember, last year, Jehan wasn’t racing in Hyderabad. He was attending as Mahindra Racing’s test and reserve driver engaging with the fans and celebrities.</p>

Exclusive Interview: Jehan Daruvala Opens Up About Rookie Season with Maserati MSG Racing in Formula E

After an illustrious 14-year racing career, Jehan Daruvala is poised to fulfil a long-awaited dream of racing on home turf in India at the upcoming Hyderabad ePrix with Maserati MSG Racing. Daruvala shares his thoughts on this significant opportunity.

Interview with Kush Maini: How It All Unfolded from F3 to F2 to F1 with Mika Hakkinen

Mentored by Mika Hakkinen and supported by Alpine's young drivers program, Kush Maini, the rising F1 talent from India, has graciously shared his journey in an exclusive interview with us.

<p>Mahindra Racing, one of the founding teams of the all-electric Formula E championship, find themselves in a situation they’ve never been in. In the Teams’ Championship, the Indian-owned racing team is 10th out of 11 teams.&nbsp;After finishing third in the 2016-17 Formula E Championship, the team’s form and results have seen a steady decline as the seasons progressed. Given the nature of the series, the team has scored an odd podium here and there, but in general, they’ve not shown the front-running pace they did in the early years of Formula E. Expectedly, there was a management shake-up in November last year. Frederic Bertand was appointed as the Team Principal of Mahindra Racing and has been tasked with recovering the team’s fortunes.</p>

<p>I spoke to Bertrand in Berlin to understand how he plans to get Mahindra Racing back to its championship-challenging ways and more.</p>

<h2>2022-23 Formula Season (Also: Season 9)</h2>

<p>After scoring a podium in the opening round in Mexico, the team has scored only twice in a possible twenty opportunities - in Hyderabad and Berlin (Race 1). While the gap to NIO in 9th place is just one point, Nissan (in 8th) is 25 points ahead; as we build up to the Portland ePrix this weekend.</p>

<p>“Season 9 is a development season for us. We were late on the hardware - so we were running after time. Running after time doesn’t compensate for time,” said a philosophical Bertrand.</p>

<p>He explained further, “We had a very good start to the season in Mexico (scoring a podium with Lucas di Grassi). It was more about being ready while others weren’t, and that helped us.”</p>

<p>“The unique situation of Formula E is that no team is weak. Realistically, I would prefer that we don’t finish under 7th place. If we manage 6th place, even better,” said Bertrand in Berlin.</p>

<p>Since our chat, the team has only slipped further in the Teams’ Championship. While accepting that the team’s current package can’t compete with the best in the series, Bertrand said, “We will be limited by our hardware, but from an execution point of view, we shouldn’t have excuses. Currently, we’re at 60% efficiency, and our goal is to raise our efficiency to 100% at the start of next season.”</p>

<h2>The Challenge of Formula E</h2>

<p>“The way Formula E is structured is a challenge once the car is homologated. Our car was homologated in Oct-Nov of 2022. We need to live with this car for the next two seasons (9 &amp; 10),” said Bertrand.</p>

<p>“After homologation, there is nothing major we change apart from changes in software or testing to understand our package better. Our hardware is fixed - and that’s something we have to accept,” explained Bertrand while accepting that the team needed to focus on extracting the best from their current package.</p>

<p>“We aren’t yet in the area to fight for championships, but we have immense development potential,” said a positive Bertrand. He went on to explain the changes he is making within Mahindra Racing for the coming seasons.</p>

<h2>The Future, The Culture</h2>

<p>“When I arrived at a team where the mojo was missing - the spirit of winning. It wasn’t about not winning but more about not trusting that we could win. The team has a high level of commitment and knowledge but slowly slipped into accepting that participating was enough,” he explained.</p>

<p>Elaborating further, Bertrand said, “For me, it’s important to bring about this change - that participating is far from being enough. We need to compete for podiums and wins.”</p>

<p>“We will need time to adapt our current structure, hire new people to additional competencies, create new processes and so on.&nbsp;We will develop the car that will race in Season 11 &amp; 12. That car has to compete with the top teams,” said Bertrand while emphasising on the team’s immediate focus.</p>

<p>“On a race by race basis, I am focusing on gathering momentum, changing everyone’s mindset &amp; reinvigorating the mojo. This is not our way down, we’re trying to consolidate our current position - P14 to P10 (in race finishes). This is not where we want to be, but given our package, this is where we should consistently be and then sometimes pull out a P8 or P6, if it comes to us.”</p>

<p>“I want people to work with Mahindra Racing with the idea that s/he is a part of a program that’s targeting strong seasons in 11 &amp; 12. I want positive and solution-oriented team members,” expressed Bertrand while further affirming, “The one thing we do want is to be 100% for the beginning of Season 10.”</p>

<p>“With increased efficiency &amp; a top car, we should be able to compete regularly in the points or even podiums come the seasons in the future. In front of us, we have twenty four months to show that we can be different - and that’s almost three seasons in this time span,” signed off Bertrand.</p>

Interview: How Frederic Bertrand Plans to Resurrect Mahindra Racing in Formula E

The Formula E Gen 3 season has gotten off to a disastrous start for Mahindra Racing. Both the Indian squad and the customer Cupra team set out with great objectives, but now they're fighting for scraps at the back of the pack.

<p>At the rookie test after the Berlin ePrix, I sat down with Mahindra Racing’s new Team Principal, Frederic Bertrand for an honest chat on two topics. First, his plans to resurrect Mahindra Racing’s form on-track. And second, his plans with Jehan Daruvala, the team’s current test and reserve driver.</p>

<p>In this two-part interview, the first part focuses on Mahindra Racing’s driver pool and Jehan Daruvala’s prospects. The second part will focus on how Bertrand is resurrecting the Indian-owned Formula E team, Mahindra Racing.</p>

<h2>Jehan was considered for Jakarta</h2>

<p>“Lucas (di Grassi) and Oliver (Rowland) have a two year contract with Mahindra Racing, so at the moment, our line-up for next season (2023-24) is confirmed,” said Bertrand very matter-of-factly in Berlin.</p>

<p>However, a week before the Jakarta ePrix (3-4 June), Mahindra Racing announced that they had parted ways with Rowland and Roberto Merhi would replace him in the double-header in Jakarta. Understandably, the buzz around Jehan’s possible debut with Mahindra Racing increased given that a race seat was possibly available after Jakarta.</p>

<p>“Jehan was an important option and he was considered for this race. Unfortunately, this weekend clashed with his Formula 2 commitments and he was unable to join us,” said Bertrand.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jehan’s career is at an interesting crossroad. While he is committed to completing the full season with Formula 2, it is evident that Mahindra Racing is eager to promote him to a race seat. Jakarta was a missed opportunity thanks to calendar clashes between Formula E and Formula 2, but could Portland or Rome be where Jehan makes his debut for Mahindra Racing?</p>

<p>“There are plenty of discussions between us and Jehan. At the moment, we are taking it step-by-step and we will see what happens to our driver choice after Jakarta,” explained Bertrand.</p>

<p>Article 10.4 of the Formula 2’s sporting regulations (2023) clearly states that any driver participating in Formula 2 needs to prioritise the series over all other championships. If in breach, the FIA could suspend a driver from an event (future Formula 2 races) and impose eight penalty points.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In my view, Jehan’s debut with Mahindra Racing might be a question of when, rather than if. The races in Portland and Rome don’t clash with the Formula 2 calendar while the final double header in London does. This is why driver selection for the remaining races of the season might not be as straightforward for Mahindra Racing. Whether the team gives Jehan an opportunity in 2023 itself, or whether they choose to start afresh in 2024 awaits to be seen.</p>

<p>“I’d love to make my Mahindra Racing debut, when the opportunity comes by. But I’m committed to my Formula 2 season right now and there are schedule clashes. I’m working with the teams to find a solution that works well for all of us. Let’s see what the future holds,” said an excited Jehan when quizzed about the possibility of him making his Mahindra Racing debut this season.</p>

<h2>Mahindra Racing’s driver pool</h2>

<p>At the rookie test in Berlin, Mahindra Racing was the only team with three rookie drivers (the others had a maximum of two). Explaining the team’s intentions, Bertrand said, “Along with the current season, we are also focusing on how to prepare our driver line-up for Season 10, 11 &amp; 12 in the best possible way. We want to create a large pool of drivers to select from.”</p>

<p>“Our goal from the rookie test is the same as Formula E has envisaged - giving young talent a chance. It is also a good way to benchmark our young drivers to our experienced drivers,” concluded Bertrand. Along with Jehan, the other drivers to participate in the rookie test with Mahindra Racing were Jordan King and Roberto Merhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To add to the driver selection mix, Mahindra Racing also has to decide for the FP0 session in Rome. The all-electric series has mandated a 30-mins long free practice session (labelled as FP0) for rookies and the objective is to further promote young talent while also creating media &amp; fan interest in the stars of tomorrow.</p>

<p>In Berlin, Bertrand said, “For FP0, I think it would make sense to have Jehan in our car &amp; see how he manages at a very demanding track like Rome.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, if Jehan races for the team in Portland, he won’t be able to participate in the FP0 in Rome because the rules specify that the participating rookie shouldn’t have previously raced in the series.</p>

<h2>Evaluating Jehan Daruvala</h2>

<p>“We want to understand how Jehan’s knowledge and experience can be transferred to Formula E," explained Bertrand when asked to elaborate on how Mahindra Racing was evaluating Jehan’s talent.</p>

<p>Continued Bertrand, “Formula E is so special that Jehan needs to manage a lot more things than he does in any other category. We want to understand and see how he can manage the flow of information and build-up through the day (during the rookie test).”.</p>

<p>While discussing Jehan’s future in Formula E and with Mahindra Racing, Bertrand said, “When it comes to Jehan and Formula E, there are two important things. First, keep concentrating on Formula 2. A great season in that series will be a good passport to Formula E and other series.”</p>

<p>“In general, Jehan’s performance at street circuit races in Formula 2 is important. He did very well in Jeddah - a double podium! He drove well in Monaco, it’s always a tricky circuit to be fast at. In the Sprint race, he was on the podium but he could have achieved more in the Feature race.”</p>

<p>“It’s a peculiar requirement of Formula E - you need to drive 99.5% or 99.6% - not 101%. The limitation of standard circuits is too many run-off areas where you can run 105% and still be in the race! This isn’t possible in Formula E.”</p>

<p>“It’s important for him to get experience in Formula E so that he can understand how a driver manages a weekend - it’s very demanding, from morning to evening where everything happens. It’s also difficult on the mental side of racing.”</p>

<p>Bertrand elaborated further on Jehan’s commitment to Formula E and how that was critical to extracting more performance. He said, “The moment he joins Formula E, he has to commit 100% to Formula E. If he’s still expecting to go to another championship, he won’t adapt fully and won’t be able to extract the most from this series.”</p>

<p>Would Jehan being an Indian have any special considerations in his decision-making process for Mahindra Racing? “If being Indian makes him faster, then yes. Otherwise, no! My target is to not make an Indian driver race in Formula E, it is to make the Indian team win,” signed off Bertrand.</p>


Interview: Mahindra Racing’s Frederic Bertrand on Jehan Daruvala & the Team’s Driver Pool

At the rookie test after the Berlin ePrix, Kunal Shah sat down with Mahindra Racing’s new Team Principal, Frederic Bertrand for an honest chat . First, his plans to resurrect Mahindra Racing’s form on-track. And second, his plans with Jehan Daruvala, the team’s current test and reserve driver.

<p>“Yes, it is,” said Jehan Daruvala when I asked him if the Formula E rookie test was an important day for his Motorsport career.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I want to drive in Formula E in the future, so I need to do well (in the rookie test) and impress Mahindra Racing!” said Jehan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The official rookie test of the 2022-23 Formula E season was held at the end of April in Berlin. Jehan, who is the official reserve driver for the Mahindra Racing team, was one of three rookies to participate in the test for the team.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I was in Berlin to experience this important moment - Jehan’s first test for an Indian-owned works racing team, one that is also one of the founding teams of Formula E. I’ve followed Jehan’s career since his karting days (Force India’s One from a Billion Hunt in 2011), so watching the-then 12-year old karting prodigy getting to grips with a Formula E race car for the first time was a special moment for me, too.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Importance of the rookie test</h2>

<p>Explaining the importance of the rookie test, Jehan said, “Obviously, there have been many big days in my Motorsport career so far. I think being part of the Red Bull junior team earlier and even Force India, having my first Formula 1 test last year (with Mclaren) and now this is another important day in my career.”</p>

<p>“Being myself, really, I know that I'm good enough. So as long as I drive anywhere close to my best, I think that should be a good showing,” said a confident Jehan when quizzed about his personal target from the rookie test.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And when asked if he was feeling any nerves before his debut Formula E run, Jehan said, “To be honest, pretty relaxed. Of course, it's my first time, so I don't really know what to expect. So there'll be a little bit of nerves (on the morning of the rookie test), but that's kind of normal for me. To drive for a manufacturer team in Formula E is different from driving for independent teams in Formula 2. But I'm going to have a good night's sleep and I'm not going to worry about it too much.”</p>

<p>Jehan’s day started early - he was at the track at 6.30 am for a track walk with the team. Along with his first time in a Mahindra Racing car, the rookie test was also going to be his first time around the Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit - also the venue of the Berlin ePrix.</p>

<h2>Preparing for the test</h2>

<p>“I spent a few days in the team’s simulator. I’ve been here all weekend (for the double header) for the Berlin ePrix. The Formula E car is a lot more complicated than what I normally drive, there are a lot more electronics to it. There are a lot more switches and buttons as well. In the simulator, I did over 100 laps - going through short runs, long runs and focusing on getting comfortable.”</p>

<p>“Frankly, I’ve had all the preparations necessary apart from actually driving the real car. That’s going to be my biggest test!” said Jehan.</p>

<p>The three-hour long morning session of the rookie test started at 9 am. The team at Mahindra Racing that was assigned to run Jehan through the day did well to help him settle in. Jehan’s initial runs were done with the powertrain output set to 300 kW. However, it wasn’t long before the team-driver felt comfortable to deploy the full 350kW as they chased performance and lap times.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I followed Jehan’s sessions via his pit-to-car radio and two things were very apparent. Jehan and his engineer’s comfort with each other - it showed that the team had prepared well on the human front as well. The second, Jehan’s detailed feedback to the team on what the car was doing at each corner and the tarmac in between.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The most-impressive part for me was the little time Jehan needed to learn the track. He was almost on the pace by his third run! His early run plan included two push laps between either returning to the pits for a debrief or a cool down lap. As he got more comfortable with the car and the track, Jehan was doing one push lap - basically, qualifying simulations (or short runs).&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Racing a Formula E car</h2>

<p>On the day before the test, Jehan and I spoke about the different cars he’s driven in the last 12 months - Formula 2, Formula 1 and now Formula E; a dream for any driver pursuing a career in Motorsport.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“A Formula E car is actually more difficult to drive. These cars don’t have downforce - so they’re more slippery, and they use road car tyres,” explained Jehan. He further explained, “I’ve not driven a car without downforce for 5 or 6 years now!”</p>

<p>“The test will be a matter of how fast I get up to speed. I have no doubt that once I am used to the car, I can get to the limit straight away and be fast. I’ve full confidence in my own driving ability. At the end of the day, I know that I will be compared to the other Mahindra Racing drivers (rookies and race drivers) and I expect myself to be faster,” expressed Jehan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There was gradual progression in Jehan’s runs - after playing catch-up with other rookie’s times as he learned his way around, he started matching them before eventually beating them!</p>

<p>In the dying moments of the morning session, Jehan clocked a lap that classified him 3rd - only a tenth off first place. With a time of 1:05.92, Jehan had gone quicker than Mahindra Racing’s regular race drivers’ (Lucas di Grassi and Oliver Rowland) qualifying lap time from Race 1 of the Berlin ePrix. There was delight and surprise in the Mahindra Racing garage and pit wall as a reaction to Jehan’s super quick lap time.</p>

<h2>Feedback on Jehan’s test</h2>

<p>Oliver Rowland, who coached Jehan during his Formula Renault days, stayed back for the rookie test to coach Jehan. Rowland was impressed with Jehan’s performance and said, “He’s never been in the car before. I think he did very well. He made no mistakes and built up to it slowly but steadily.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Jordan (King, one of the other rookies for Mahindra Racing) has driven the car before so it was normal that he started ahead. There came a point when they (Jehan and Jordan) were quite close (in lap times) and then Jehan did a good job in the end to finish ahead in the classification.”</p>

<p>“Also, Jehan’s feedback was good - we can use this as a test session for the race team. He has proved that the speed is there already and then it’s about finding consistency at this pace,” said Rowland.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mahindra Racing’s Team Principal Frederic Bertrand was impressed by Jehan’s performance, too. He said, “He’s helping himself by doing good times (at the rookie test). We want to understand how Jehan’s experience and performance can be transferred to Formula E. We want to understand how he can manage the car, the flow of the information, how he’s approaching the test &amp; progression through the sessions.”</p>

<h2>Adapting to Formula E</h2>

<p>By the end of the test day, Jehan had driven 112 laps - and his fastest lap time of the day (set in the morning session) saw him classified sixth overall. Several notable drivers from other categories had participated in the test - Felipe Drugovich (reigning Formula 2 champion) and former Formula 1 driver Daniil Kvyat, to name a few. But of course, while these drivers were rookies in Formula E, they had several years of experience in other competitive racing series.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Summarising his test, Jehan said, “I was competitive in both sessions. I ticked all boxes - I didn’t make any mistakes and I gave good feedback. Frankly, the car isn’t that far away from the simulator.”</p>

<p>“The car reminded me of my go-kart days! It was a lot of fun to drive. It slides around a lot and you can really fight with the car. The first lap was a bit strange - when I didn’t hear much of a sound from the engine!” explained Jehan of his first time racing an electric car.</p>

<p>“There’s a lot of power, you get all the torque straightaway! It took a couple of laps to get used to that. The other difference is the tyres. The main difference to the Pirellis (used in Formula 2) is that you get one or two shots for a good lap time. After that, they’re done. In my test, I used one set of tyres (Hankook) from the end of the morning to the end of the afternoon and they were consistently delivering good lap times,” said Jehan.</p>

<p>“Formula 2 and Formula E cars are very different to drive. There’s not much one can take from one series to the other - one has to adapt to the car itself. At the level that I am racing, it is expected that I am able to adapt fast enough. I’m expected to do well in any car I jump into!”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Next up for Jehan in Formula E would be the ‘FP0’ session in the Rome ePrix where teams have to field a rookie driver. Mahindra Racing is yet to announce their driver for this session but one assumes that Jehan’s performance in the rookie test will give the team confidence to choose him over the other rookies, Jordan King and Roberto Merhi.</p>


Interview: Jehan Daruvala's Formula E Rookie Test For Mahindra Racing

The official rookie test of the 2022-23 Formula E season was held at the end of April in Berlin. Jehan, who is the official reserve driver for the Mahindra Racing team, was one of three rookies to participate in the test for the team.

<p>"Hopefully, I will drive for Mahindra Racing in the Formula E rookie test in Berlin (24th April),” said a confident Jehan when I spoke to him earlier in the year. The rookie test follows the two-day Berlin ePrix at the end of April.</p>

<p>After the high of the inaugural Hyderabad ePrix in February, could April deliver another memorable moment for Indian Motorsport and Formula E fans - an Indian driver driving for an Indian team?&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mahindra Racing has had a plethora of drivers test and race for the team since the inception of the all-electric series in 2014. However, only one Indian has raced for the team ever since - Karun Chandhok (2014-15 season).&nbsp;</p>

<p><b>Indian driver in Formula E</b></p>

<p>“Of course, it helps that I am Indian but I am there because I am good enough &amp; have earned my spot on merit. Mahindra Racing signed me up because they believe I can win races in Formula E and not because I am Indian,” said Jehan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2023, Jehan is in his fourth season in Formula 2. In the opening 6 races of the season, Jehan scored points in 4 races - including a double podium weekend in Saudi Arabia. He is currently 6th in the Drivers’ championship with 32 points - 26 points adrift from the top (Ayumu Iwasa leads).</p>

<p>While discussing his future in Motorsport, Jehan said, “Racing in single-seaters is my preferred option and Formula E is the future. The sport has grown immensely since inception. I would love to race full-time in Formula E. The level of drivers in the series is very high. Obviously, Mahindra Racing would be my preferred team for next season (2023-24)”</p>

<p><b>Mahindra Racing</b></p>

<p>“But to get a seat in Formula E isn’t easy either! Mahindra Racing has made it clear that I need to perform at a high-level in Formula 2. There's always pressure since there aren’t a lot of places to hide when racing,” continued Jehan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jehan is yet to drive a Formula E race car, however, he confirmed that he had participated in simulator sessions with Mahindra Racing.</p>

<p>“A Formula E race car feels like a big go-kart!” said Jehan.</p>

<p>“There are no gears - and the car has a lot of power and doesn’t have much downforce. These cars make for good racing. The tyres aren’t racing slicks, so they’re sketchy and slippery while driving. The street tracks are super-cool - driving so close to the walls, I think that’s the most-fun part about it,” expressed Jehan.&nbsp;</p>

<p><b>Hyderabad ePrix</b></p>

<p>At the inaugural Hyderabad ePrix in February, Jehan was the most-popular driver in the paddock - despite not racing in the ePrix himself. Along with fan and media interactions, Jehan drove hot laps in the Pininfarina Battista, an electric sports car. Jehan’s most-famous passenger was Sachin Tendulkar - India’s most-popular cricketer, and a self-confessed Motorsport aficionado.</p>

<p>“I hope to make it a bit better by being on the grid next year! The combination of being an Indian racing for an Indian team in India (in the Hyderabad ePrix) is definitely on my mind!,” said an excited Jehan. To this date, such a feat has never occurred in history - although Narain Karthikeyan did race in the 2011 Indian Grand Prix but it wasn’t for an Indian racing team.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jehan also confirmed that he had been in discussions with Mahindra Racing for three years before their union. “Had I taken the Formula E route earlier, I would’ve probably had a race seat by now. But the team was patient with me while I pursued my Formula 1 dream,” explained Jehan.</p>

<p>Sharing more details about his future plans, Jehan said, “I signed with Alexander &amp; Julian Jakobi (of GP Sports Management fame) &amp; we are pushing together to find our best options for next season.”</p>

<p>“I need to just win (in Formula 2) - that’s the best way. In my situation, coming second or third won’t not be enough. In fact, even winning might not be enough (for a promotion to Formula 1). But I want to give myself the best possible chance by targeting a championship victory. Then, whatever happens, happens."</p>

<p>"Frankly, even if I win the Formula 2 championship, I don’t have expectations but I would hope that I get a Formula 1 seat! Maybe I deserve to race in Formula 1, but maybe I was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” confessed Jehan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It’s definitely not easy but there are a lot of drivers who have been in this situation over the years. We all set ourselves to achieve things but we don’t always end up achieving them. When I look back at my career, even if I don’t end up being the third Indian racing in Formula 1, I have definitely been the most-successful Indian in the ladder going up to Formula 1.” signed off Jehan.</p>

Jehan Daruvala on his Time in Racing and What the Future Holds

We sat down with racing driver Jehan Daruvala who is a currently a reserve driver for the Mahindra Racing Formula E team and also lines up on the Formula 2 grid as well. We touch base about his plans, about the road to Formula 1 and how did Formula E come into the mix.

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After a lull of four weeks, Formula One returns to action this weekend in Belgium. After depriving us of action, fans have three races each to look forward in the months of September, October and November and I am excited to see how the championship battle between the Mercedes drivers plays up. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While most expect Hamilton to claim his second successive and third World Drivers’ Championship overall, I am hoping we see some fight from Rosberg to claim his first or for the absolute Ferrari-Vettel fans, the German’s fifth! A good fight for top honours is what I seek. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If Hungary was anything to go by, Mercedes know that Ferrari will and Williams won’t pounce if they falter at the starts. The ‘manual start’ by the driver will only add more spice come Spa along with some burnt clutches. Hungary also showed to Hamilton and his fans that his championship lead is only a retirement or bad race long! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Apart from the racing, I expect the off-track news to keep fans engaged too. Will Ferrari renew Raikkonen’s services for 2016 or not? That’s the big game changer in the drivers’ market in my view. The Italian team is known to retain their drivers way past their sell by date, but if Raikkonen is shown the door, who will be his replacement? While Bottas and Hulkenberg are the most discussed options, I am keen to know if any of the Red Bull Racing drivers (Ricciardo or Verstappen specifically) are spoken to and how their complex contract situations are handled. That is if Vettel allows drivers from his alma mater. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The second team with driver related dilemma would be Mclaren. While Alonso will stay, will Button’s contract be renewed? Or will Magnussen or Vandoorne be promoted to a racing seat? And while Mclaren take their time figuring their line-up, the big question in my mind is if any of the younger drivers are keen to make the step up without the guarantee of a competitive engine by Honda! And if things don’t improve, will Formula One lose Alonso to the World Endurance Championships or something similar? I guess this is a problem that even Ecclestone can’t fix! </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Renault’s decision on their investments in F1 will have my keen interest. To me, they’re possibly the most confused manufacturer the sport has seen in the last two decades for their – win, quit, win, quit attitude. It is public that they’re contemplating whether to acquire an existing mid-field team or start up a new works team or quit the sport altogether. While losing an engine supplier and an existing investor in the sport isn’t good news, leaving the supply of engines to Ferrari and Mercedes isn’t a good idea either. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Apart from engine economics, one wonders the fate of Red Bull Racing and whether they will pick up a Ferrari or Mercedes engine to power their chassis given the lack of other options. And should they do so, will this hamper their competitiveness? The situation that Red Bull finds themselves in isn’t most comfortable and what will make me most uncomfortable is if this leads to a change in their approach towards the Young Driver Program, one of the few genuine programs to bring young talent to the sharp end of the grid in the sport. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And lastly, will Massa be retained too? Over to Spa! </span></p>

<p>Kimi Raikkonen being voted as the most popular driver in the recently concluded GPDA survey makes most fans believe that Ferrari should retain him in 2016. If only F1 was a popularity contest. What I wonder is ‘what is the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association is doing by conducting surveys that the sport’s marketing team should? Aren’t the drivers just supposed to arrive, drive and smile in front of the media, fans and sponsors? I guess it’s the driving part of their job that isn’t challenged much these days.</p>
<p>Not too many times before have we seen top teams shuffle their drivers this frequently. McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing did so last year. Will Ferrari bring about a change this year by replacing Raikkonen? It’s tough to call, and I don’t say this because it involves former World Champion and the prodigious Kimi Raikkonen. I say this because Ferrari is known to keep their drivers much beyond their shelf life. If it was based purely on performance, Raikkonen should go.</p>
<p>If so, who should come to Ferrari? Hulkenberg, Bottas, Ricciardo, Verstappen and even Sainz’s name has done the rounds of the paddock. Despite Red Bull Racing’s non-performance and threats to quit Formula 1, I do not believe any of the Red Bull Racing drivers (senior or junior) will jump ship yet. If it’s a direct toss between Hulkenberg and Bottas, I would go with the German over the Finn for consistency reasons.</p>
<p>Hulkenberg’s confidence has received a boost after his debut win at Le Mans. He’s punched well above his weight at Sahara Force India, and is the best placed driver in the Drivers’ Championship after the ‘top 4.’ Bottas has impressed, no doubt, but he’s failed to beat Massa consistently this season and that makes me wonder why Ferrari are reportedly chasing a driver who is only just beating a driver Ferrari let go off not too long ago. If that’s the case, go hire Massa again!</p>
<p>Given the lack of interest in technology (from the fans) and lack of a battle for the championships, driver changes seem to be the only ingredient that could induce fresh excitement in 2016. The other being the possibility of having 21 races on the calendar – the longest ever! The sport needs a strong hook to keep fans glued before the much faster sounding and exciting for regulations are introduced in 2017.</p>
<p>And just as the sport is trying to take its racing seriously, I think it’s time they take their business seriously too. The want of a stronger business model for the mid-field teams is immediate amongst cost controls. I am divided on the talk of customer cars as it favours dependency on the top teams to run the ecosystem, which is a strong no-no. It does seem strange when the otherwise capitalist sport of Formula 1 decides to turn socialist.</p>

<p>Strategy – the one element that has offered unparalleled excitement in the last few decades and still continues to do so seems to be lacking when it comes to identifying the future of the sport and business of Formula1. I think the sports’ powers and stakeholders need to start by questioning the purpose of F1 – is it a racing series? Entertainment? A championship between technology companies? All of it, or even worse, none of it? (Bernie can have some strange answers!)</p>
<p>Much like strategy, F1 loves creating ‘groups’ to discuss some of the sports problems. We had the Technical Working Group (TWG) and the Overtaking Working Group (OWG) a few years ago and now have the ‘F1 Strategy Group’. This group consists of six representatives of the FOM, the FIA and six teams in the sport. Of the six, five slots are permanently occupied by Ferrari, Mercedes, Mclaren, Red Bull Racing and Williams with the sixth slot awarded to the team that finishes as the ‘best of the rest’ in the previous season. For 2015, this team is Force India.</p>
<p>There are several ironies of this group in that I would like to point out. Firstly, the participants are involved in writing and voting for the rules of competition – possibly the only sport in the world where such a phenomena exists. But yes, one could argue that since the teams invest in the sport more than anyone else (that too in millions), this somewhat seems right!</p>
<p>Second, the fact that from all the participant teams (is it 9 or 10 this year?) only the favoured teams have their say – with one slot left for all of the mid-field teams. Fairly undemocratic, I say. But this is how the sport has been and maybe it hasn’t found a compelling reason to change yet.</p>
<p>So the F1 Strategy Group met last month and agreed to explore a number of ideas to make the cars faster (thank you!). But besides that, the only change the Group agreed upon was to ban the change in helmet design! This is when the sport is dogged by dwindling TV audiences and circuit attendance, increase in costs, uncompetitive grid among many others.</p>
<p>The greater issues of the sport such as unequal revenue distribution and cost control were ignored altogether. A study of ‘customer cars’ was announced – a move that could question the current DNA of the sport and look to give greater control of the sport’s economy to a few and threaten to reduce competitiveness of an already uncompetitive grid! In this chaos, the FIA has introduced tenders for new teams to join the grid in 2016 and 2017. I wonder if investing in the sport till there’s clarity on its business would make any sense. But interestingly so, there seem to be a few takers already!</p>
<p>On the sporting side, Nico Rosberg’s inability to match Lewis Hamilton’s pace and skill (he’s anyway not as talented, I am told) in 2015 has me worried – and maybe it should worry Mercedes too. Though the team has scored a record number of 1-2 finishes, they need a stronger number 2 driver to challenge Hamilton consistently for many reasons. Firstly, to keep their star driver grounded and honest and secondly, to plan their driver succession. We saw what happened to Ferrari once Schumacher departed in 2006! (Their 2007 was a lucky and unexpected one!)</p>
<p>The world of Formula1 is cut-throat and ruthless. ‘Drivers are the easiest to replace’ is a famous saying and I won’t be surprised if Raikkonen too joins Rosberg on the list of discards. But this could be a silver lining for talented mid-field drivers such as Bottas, Hulkenberg and others. A shake-up in the driver market also brings in some much needed excitement – an element that the sport is lacking since a few seasons despite Vettel’s move to Ferrari and Alonso’s to Mclaren.</p>
<p>And lastly, there have been multiple reports that the ‘racing’ seems to have gotten simpler in the last couple of years. While this point is difficult to prove, that the drivers have taken time to run a ‘fan survey’ (via the Grand Prix Drivers Association) probably is an indication that it probably has!</p>
