Kia Syros Long Term Report: Month 2 - A Space Odyssey

We’re now two months into our long-term test, having covered another 996 kilometres and bringing our total experience with the car to 2200 km. The general sentiment towards the Syros remains largely positive, and it continues to impress in areas crucial for Indian consumers, especially here in Delhi NCR.

One of the Syros’ highlights, and something I’ve come to appreciate immensely this past month, is its ride quality. Given the unpredictable and often cratered landscape of Delhi NCR roads, a well-tuned suspension has been a blessing. This translates to a significantly more comfortable commute, and with the monsoon season almost upon us, I’m confident the Syros is well-prepared to tackle the waterlogged and pothole-riddled streets that inevitably follow. Family comfort is another area where the Syros impressed. I had the task of chauffeuring my parents around for a few days, and they, too, showered their praises. The easy ingress and egress, an often-overlooked but vital factor, was a big hit. Once inside, the abundant rear legroom and overall seat comfort were greatly appreciated.

And then there’s the dual-pane panoramic sunroof. It helps flood the interior with natural light, and coupled to the light-coloured interior, there is always an incredible sense of openness and airiness. Plus, the monsoon has started descending upon Delhi and the sunroof will come quite handy, indeed. I’m genuinely looking forward to enjoying the lovely, post-rain breezes, clean air and clear, open skies. I think I might have snatched away the keys at just the right time.

However, there is a slight gripe which is slowly turning into an annoyance: the brake feel. While the pedal offers a firm initial bite, the actual response can feel a bit lacklustre, almost spongy at times. This works fine in bumper-to-bumper traffic but I’ve encountered one or two hairy moments during emergency braking where I could have done with a more reassuring, immediate bite.

Despite this braking concern, the Kia Syros Diesel Automatic continues to be a commendable package. Its everyday usability, especially the comfortable ride quality, along with the generous space and features, reaffirms its strong contention for those who require the best-of-the-best-but-at-a-price urban dwelling machine. I’m eager to see how it performs as the monsoon truly sets in.
