Maruti Suzuki Invicto Long Term Report October 2024

The Maruti Suzuki Invicto is a car that we are very familiar with, not just in the Invicto form, but also in the Hycross form, if you know what I mean! Of late, I’ve been a bit bereft of an everyday car, so when the folks at Maruti Suzuki asked if I would like to drive it for a while, I was more than happy to take it on. Maruti’s first foray in this people mover segment marks the return of the manufacturer to the premium segment. In fact, if I’m not wrong, this is probably the most expensive car offered in India in their whole history.

First impressions of the Invicto are very good, as you would expect. It’s not too high, so getting in and out of the car is not a problem. At the same time, the Invicto has excellent seats which are very comfortable even for long journeys. The car also is quite feature rich with climate control, a full selection of airbags and other safety features, as well as good connectivity features. Some customers might miss the lack of ADAS features, but I personally hate those active systems and am quite happy that I don’t have to deal with the sudden braking and lane assist interference in driving.

Featuring the strong hybrid powerplant, with a dedicated EV mode, the on-road feel of the Invicto is quite good. For most people driving a strong hybrid for the first time, the Invicto throws up a surprise as the car starts off in EV mode and the engine fires up much later, making them assume there is a fault with the engine and it hasn’t started! I do get a bit irritated with the rubber band effect of the CVT, but the adequate torque and power levels make up for that. What is the best aspect is the fuel efficiency that one gets – both in urban and highway conditions. I’m seeing a consistent 13km/l in my daily commute – making it the most I’ve been able to extract from a car! – and on the highway I get about 15-16km/l. If you’re a sedate driver, you can expect to another 20-25% above these numbers without a problem.

The other good aspect of the Invicto is the in-cabin comfort. Despite the large glasshouse and that massive panoramic sunroof, the air-conditioning is super effective in all three rows of seating. The ride comfort is quite good, and while this is not a sports car, the Invicto is a very competent driving machine, albeit a bit on the boring side when it comes to driver involvement. At the same time, the three rows of seating or even the large boot with the third row folded really bump up the practicality in the car. While I’ve already munched a few thousand kilometers, with the holiday season here, I think another couple of journeys in the Invicto might be a good choice to undertake now.
