Smooth Operator

This month, I’ve been riding the all-new TVS Apache RTR 160 4v. And before getting on with the report, let me make it clear that I, sometimes, tend to be a little biased towards the Apache series. You see, it was on the original Apache 150 that I learnt to ride, and since 2009, I’ve also owned an RTR 180. So, it’s kind of natural to have an emotional connect with the brand. That said, since I’ve ridden the aforementioned iterations for so many years – both are still with us in the family – I think I’ve a fair understanding of how the Apache series has progressed over the years.

logbook

The first time I rode that new RTR 160 4v, I was absolutely taken aback by its refinement. Having lived with the vibes of the old models for nearly a decade, the smoothness of the new motorcycle is so good that sometimes it seems that there’s something wrong with the motorcycle! Tremendous job by TVS, really! Next, the front-end no longer feels excessively firm. I also like the lightness of controls, everything feels fluid – the clutch, gear-lever and the bars. Even the TVS Remora tyres grip much better than the old bike’s Srichakras. The brakes are as sharp as before, but because the front is a little soft, hard braking results in a sharp nose dive.

There’s no doubt that some of the sharpness of the old versions is gone, but the new motorcycle is a more rounded package and will appeal to a larger audience. It’s more practical, super smooth and more efficient, while still being a sweet and fun motorcycle to ride around.
