As part of the new sporting regulations for the 2016 Formula 1 season, tyres are no longer uniformly allocated to each team by F1's sole tyre supplier Pirelli. From the season opening Australian Grand Prix weekend (March 18 to 20), each driver will be allowed to choose 13 sets of tyres from the range of three compounds provided. The softest of the three compounds at each GP weekend will be provided for qualifying, which means compounds like the super-soft turning up at tracks where they are normally not used.

Pirelli have shared the tyre allocations as per driver choice for the first F1 weekend of the year, which sees most front-running drivers no more than two sets of the hardest compound available. In the case of the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, that is the white-striped medium compound tyre.

The Manor Racing drivers Pascal Wehrlein and F1 debutant Rio Haryanto are the exceptions with both selecting four sets of mediums, four sets of softs and five sets of super-soft tyres. That would indicate the back-marker team having harder sets of tyres available to them in the race with the intention of running for longer than some of their more immediate rivals at the lower end of the F1 grid.
