McLaren has shared the first official renders of its 2026 Formula 1 car, the MCL40, giving an early look at the team’s next machine before pre-season testing begins. The car appears in a black test livery that will be used only for early running, with the full race colours scheduled to be revealed at the team’s launch in February. These images offer a clear idea of the car’s shape and packaging under the new 2026 rules, even if many details remain under wraps. At this stage, the focus is not on looks but on how the MCL40 has been built to handle a major reset in Formula 1 regulations.

The 2026 rule changes have forced teams to rethink almost everything, from how airflow moves around the car to how the power unit fits within the chassis. For McLaren, the MCL40 represents the first real answer to those changes. The renders suggest a clean base design, with development expected to follow once track data begins to arrive.

McLaren will be present at the Barcelona shakedown, but the team will not run the MCL40 on the opening day. With only three of the five days counting towards official testing mileage, McLaren has chosen to delay its first laps and use the extra time to finalise build work and preparation. The aim is to start running with fewer interruptions once the car goes on track.

This approach highlights how careful teams are being with the new generation of cars. Early reliability checks, cooling behaviour and system validation are now more important than chasing lap times. McLaren wants its first laps to deliver useful data rather than problem-solving sessions in the garage.

The MCL40 follows McLaren’s 2025 championship-winning season, where the team fought for race wins across most weekends but missed consistency at key moments. With the 2026 regulations reshuffling the grid, McLaren’s focus is clear: build a stable platform first, then unlock performance as the season moves closer.
