The Cadillac F1 Team has received final approval from Formula 1 to join the grid in 2026. The FIA and F1 have confirmed General Motors and its Cadillac brand as the sport’s 11th team, replacing a provisional agreement made last November. The team will initially use Ferrari engines before introducing its own power units in 2028, as it prepares for the sport’s biggest regulation changes in history.
Cadillac’s entry follows a complex approval process. General Motors first partnered with Andretti Global, but F1 rejected the bid, questioning its value to the sport. After Andretti stepped aside, Dan Towriss’s TWG Group led a revised proposal that won approval. This decision sparked tensions, with Michael Andretti fighting for a reversal and even involving the US Congress and the Department of Justice.

Leading the project is former Marussia team principal Graeme Lowdon, supported by experienced engineers like Pat Symonds and ex-Renault engine chief Rob White. With just a year to prepare, Cadillac F1 must now focus on building a competitive team and developing its own power unit to compete with the top teams.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: 'Today marks a transformative moment, and I am proud to lead the Federation in this progressive step for the championship. The FIA Formula One Championship's expansion to an 11th team in 2026 is a milestone. GM/Cadillac brings fresh energy, aligning with the new FIA 2026 regulations and ushering in an exciting era for the sport.
'The Cadillac Formula 1 Team’s presence in the paddock will inspire future competitors and fans. Their entry strengthens our mission to push motorsport’s boundaries at the highest level.'
Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports said: 'For the past year, we have worked hand in hand with GM to lay a robust foundation for an extraordinary Formula 1 entry. Now, with 2026 in our sights after today’s final approval from the FIA and Formula One Management, we’re accelerating our efforts — expanding our facilities, refining cutting-edge technologies, and continuing to assemble top-tier talent.'

The team has yet to confirm its driver lineup for 2026, but one name stands out—Colton Herta. At 24, the IndyCar star is known for his speed and talent, making him a strong candidate for Formula 1. With Cadillac aiming for a competitive debut, Herta could be paired with an experienced F1 driver to balance youth with expertise.
