Formula 2 driver Kimi Antonelli is set to make his Formula 1 debut at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. The young Italian will drive the Mercedes-AMG W15 during the first Free Practice session at Monza, stepping in for Lewis Hamilton, who is set to depart the team at the end of the season. The Mercedes F1 team faces a significant challenge in finding a suitable successor for the seven-time world champion. After exploring options with top-tier drivers like Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz, the team has likely turned its attention to Antonelli, a rising star from its junior program. Impressed by his performances in Formula 2 and his recent Formula 1 test sessions, Mercedes has decided to give the 18-year-old prodigy a chance to showcase his talent behind the wheel of their 2024 F1 car. Beyond this initial opportunity, the Brackley-based team is seriously considering Antonelli as a long-term replacement for Hamilton, positioning him as a potential future star of the sport.

Lewis Hamilton's anticipated move to Ferrari in 2025 has sparked intense speculation about who will take his place at Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team. The departure of the seven-time world champion signals the end of a remarkably successful era for the Silver Arrows. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has been clear about his determination to find the best possible successor to Hamilton. While three-time world champion Max Verstappen has been a topic of discussion, the Dutchman remains committed to Red Bull Racing, where he is under contract for at least another season.

With Verstappen likely off the table, Antonelli is now being seriously considered as a leading candidate to fill the significant void Hamilton will leave behind.
