The wraps are off at Mercedes as the team introduces the W17, its F1 machine for the 2026 season. The launch took place digitally as Formula 1 moves into a fresh technical cycle that changes how cars look, move and generate performance. With smaller dimensions, lighter weight and new power unit regulations coming into play, the W17 is more than just another update. This car signals a fresh start for Mercedes as the team targets the new regulations and aims to get back into the championship fight following an underwhelming ground-effect era. The reveal sets the tone for what could be one of the most important seasons in recent F1 history, with teams starting again and performance gaps expected to shift.

The W17 has been built to match the 2026 regulations, which introduce active aerodynamics for the first time in modern F1. The car can switch between high-downforce and low-drag modes, changing how it behaves on straights and through corners. Mercedes has redesigned the overall layout to improve efficiency and energy usage, which will be crucial under the new rules. The updated aerodynamic platform focuses on stability and balance rather than outright peak downforce.

Visually, the Mercedes W17 stays true to the team’s identity. The silver and black colour scheme returns, paired with turquoise highlights connected to the title sponsor. While the colours remain familiar, the shape of the car brings noticeable changes, especially around the sidepods and engine cover. Sponsor placement has been adjusted to fit the new bodywork, giving the livery a slightly different feel without losing the Mercedes look. The new Microsoft partnership is easy to spot, with its branding placed on the front wing endplates and on the sides of the airbox.

Mercedes will contest the 2026 Formula 1 season with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli as its driver line-up. Russell delivered consistent points finishes last year and remained the team’s leading scorer, while Antonelli impressed during his rookie campaign with steady progress across the season.

A major talking point for 2026 is the new power unit formula, which increases electrical output and removes the MGU-H system. Mercedes High Performance Powertrains has worked alongside the chassis team from the early stages to make sure the new hybrid package fits smoothly into the W17. Cooling and energy deployment have shaped much of the car’s layout.

Track running is expected to begin with an initial shakedown before pre-season testing, where Mercedes will start understanding exactly where it stands as F1 enters a new era.
