Piastri’s penalty handed Norris a home win at a chaotic British GP, as Verstappen’s race unravelled after a spin dropped him down the order.

The 2025 British Grand Prix at Silverstone had it all—rain, strategy, drama, and heartbreak. Oscar Piastri looked set to win his first Formula 1 race when the skies opened up, but things quickly turned sour. A controversial penalty saw him drop from the lead to second, while teammate Lando Norris took full advantage to deliver a dream home win for McLaren. It all unravelled during a safety car period. Piastri, trying to manage the pace, braked hard—too hard, according to the FIA. Max Verstappen, caught off guard, briefly overtook him before falling back. Stewards said the move was dangerously sudden, and handed Piastri a 10-second penalty.

The documents read: 'The Stewards reviewed positioning/marshalling system data, video, telemetry, team radio and in-car video evidence.
'When the clerk of the course had declared that the safety car was coming in that lap and the lights were extinguished, Car 81 suddenly braked hard (59.2 psi of brake pressure) and reduced speed in the middle of the straight between T14 and T15, from 218 kph to 52 kph, resulting in Car 1 having to take evasive action to avoid a collision. This momentarily resulted in Car 1 unavoidably overtaking Car 81, a position which he gave back immediately.
'Article 55.15 of the FIA Sporting Regulations required Car 81 to proceed at a pace which involved no erratic braking nor any other manoeuvre which is likely to endanger other drivers from the point at which the lights on the safety car are turned off.
'What Car 81 did was clearly a breach of that article. In accordance with the penalty guidelines, we imposed a 10 second time penalty to Car 81.'

Verstappen’s day wasn’t any better. Starting from pole, he looked in control early on, but the car’s rear grip faded in the changing conditions. At the restart, reacting to Piastri’s braking, Verstappen spun off, ruining any chance of a podium. It was a double blow for the Dutchman, whose strong start vanished in a moment.

The result was a huge shake-up. Piastri, once on course for victory, had to settle for second. Norris, meanwhile, crossed the line to give McLaren its first Silverstone win in years.
In the end, it was a race that showed how fast things can change in Formula 1. For Piastri, it was a bitter pill to swallow. Verstappen, too, was left wondering what could’ve been.
